Our Commitment to Our Students and Families Our Commitment to Our Students and Families

Dear Berea City School District Families,

Our priority is, and always will be, the well-being, success, and support of every student in our district.

We recognize that recent national events related to immigration enforcement, and the conversations it has sparked across the country, have caused concern for many families. Our district is committed to ensuring that all students feel safe, respected, and supported in our schools regardless of their background or family circumstances, and we are continuing to monitor developments as part of our effort to provide accurate information and support.

It is important to emphasize that a child’s immigration status, or that of their parents, does not affect their right to a public education. Federal law guarantees access to schooling for all children, and we remain dedicated to providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive learning environment for every student.

If you have concerns about immigration, student well-being, or access to resources, we encourage you to reach out. Our school counselors, administrators, and community partners are available to provide direct support and connect families with helpful resources.

We remain dedicated to providing the best possible education and support for our students.

Sincerely,

Tracy L. Wheeler
Superintendent

Changes to Enrollment Eligibility Changes to Enrollment Eligibility

Beginning with the 2026–27 school year, new state legislation, HB114, standardizes the age-eligibility requirements for kindergarten enrollment for all school districts across Ohio. All kindergarten students must be five years of age on or before the first official day of school in the district the student will attend to be eligible for kindergarten.

Kindergarten registration for 2026-27 begins on February 18, 2026.

The information below is intended to help families understand the new requirements, available exceptions, and what to expect during the registration process for Berea City Schools.

What is Berea City School District's new kindergarten age requirement for the 2026-27 school year?

To be eligible for kindergarten in the 2026–27 school year, a child must be five years old on or before August 24, 2026, the first official day of kindergarten for Berea City Schools. This replaces the previous August 1 cutoff.

Preschool families should review this requirement carefully when planning for registration. Students must now be three or four years old by August 24 to enroll in preschool.

Who should I contact if I have questions?

Please contact the Berea City School District Board of Education office by calling 216-898-8300.

Berea-Midpark High School Earns 2025 AP School Honor Roll Recognition Berea-Midpark High School Earns 2025 AP School Honor Roll Recognition

AP School Honor Roll Badge
zoom_out_map

We’re proud to share that Berea-Midpark High School has been named a 2025 AP School Honor Roll school, earning Bronze recognition for its Advanced Placement program.

This designation reflects the opportunities available to BMHS students and the work happening in classrooms every day. Nearly half of BMHS seniors (48%) took at least one AP exam during high school. In addition, 34% earned a score of three or higher on an AP exam, and 9% of seniors challenged themselves by taking five or more AP exams before graduating.

The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools that are expanding access to college-level coursework while supporting students in being successful. It highlights schools that are helping students build confidence, prepare for life after high school, and earn potential college credit along the way.

We’re proud of our students for taking on these challenges and grateful to our teachers for supporting them every step of the way.

February is Love the Bus Month! 🚌 February is Love the Bus Month! 🚌

It's a time to recognize the important role school transportation plays in our district and to celebrate the dedicated professionals who help get our students to and from school safely each day.

Our bus drivers and transportation staff are often the first faces students see in the morning and the last at the end of the day. They build relationships, set a positive tone, and play a key role in keeping students safe, on time, and ready to learn. Their work requires patience, care, and consistency, often behind the scenes and in all kinds of weather.

We are grateful for the commitment of our transportation team and the care they show our students every day. Love the Bus Month is a reminder to pause, say thank you, and recognize the impact they have on our school community.

To our drivers and transportation staff. We appreciate you and the important role you play in supporting our students and families. 🧡💙

One of the most visible and impactful ways Berea City School District supports safety is through the presence of School Resource Officers in all of our schools. These officers are not just assigned to buildings. They are active members of each school community.

School Resource Officers (SROs) play a vital role in maintaining safe learning environments. Their presence helps prevent unsafe situations, supports quick response when concerns arise, and reinforces a sense of security for students, staff, and families. Just as important, SROs build meaningful relationships with students. They serve as mentors, role models, and trusted adults who students feel comfortable approaching.

SROs are regularly involved in daily school life. They greet students, attend school events, collaborate with administrators, and engage in age-appropriate conversations about safety, responsibility, and decision-making. This consistent presence helps humanize law enforcement and strengthens mutual respect between students and officers.

Berea City Schools partners closely with local police departments to ensure each building is supported by trained officers who understand the unique needs of school environments. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to student well-being, proactive safety planning, and strong community relationships.

Our School Resource Officers:

Berea Police Department

  • Officer Chuck Gute (Berea-Midpark High School)

  • Officer Matt Finley (Grindstone Elementary)

  • Officer Glen Caddell (Berea-Midpark High School)

  • Patrolman Alex Williams (Snow School)

Middleburg Heights Police Department

  • Officer Dennis Bort (Berea-Midpark Middle School)

  • Officer George Rasch (Berea-Midpark Middle School and Big Creek Elementary)

  • Officer Danny Riley (Berea-Midpark Middle School and Big Creek Elementary)

  • Officer Paul Swisher (Berea-Midpark Middle School and Big Creek Elementary)

Brook Park Police Department

  • Officer Matt Kimmich (Brook Park Elementary)

We are grateful for the dedication of our School Resource Officers and for the strong partnerships with our local police departments. Their work plays a meaningful role in supporting the daily success of our students and schools.

The Portrait of a Titan is a collective vision that articulates aspirations for ALL of our students. The Portrait identifies six key competencies that every student in the Berea City School District should possess by the time they graduate. These competencies are nurtured at every grade level. They are adaptable, communicator, critical thinker, empathetic, innovative, and leader. Our educators are inspiring students to cultivate these essential skills.

Real-World Science Sparks Curiosity in the Classroom Real-World Science Sparks Curiosity in the Classroom

In Miss Figueroa’s 1st grade classroom at Grindstone Elementary, visiting meteorologist Alexis Walters turned a science lesson into a real-world exploration of how ice forms on Lake Erie. Students asked thoughtful questions, made connections, and stayed engaged from start to finish.

This kind of learning builds the habits we value in our Portrait of a Titan. Curiosity is encouraged. Critical thinking is practiced. Students see that what they learn in school connects directly to the world around them, and that their questions matter.

The first Unified Sports Day of 2026 set the tone for the year with energy, connection, and a strong sense of Titan pride. Students came together not just to compete, but to support one another, celebrate differences, and build friendships.

Moments like these reflect the kind of community we strive to build through our Portrait of a Titan. Students lead with empathy, show respect for one another, and create spaces where everyone feels valued and included. Every game, high five, and cheer reinforced the belief that everyone belongs and has a place on a team.

The Berea Board of Education holds regular community conversations to give the public access to board members outside of the formal public participation setting of a meeting. Residents will have the opportunity to meet and discuss any concerns they may have with two board members during a 30 minute time-slot set aside prior to each regular scheduled Board of Education meeting. The goal of this effort is to more effectively connect with the public and learn more about the community.
