📣 Families! Here's What's Happening This Week:
🔤 Kindergarten — A Peek at Learning
Our Kindergarten students are learning all about the letter N/n! They are practicing how to correctly form uppercase and lowercase N/n, learning the /n/ sound, and identifying words that begin with the letter, such as night, neighbor, and nice. Students are also practicing reflection by looking at their handwriting and identifying their best work.
💡 Parent Tip:
Practice the letter N/n together at home! Ask your child to find objects around the house that begin with the /n/ sound. You can also have them practice writing N and n while saying the /n/ sound aloud.
✏️ 3rd Grade — A Peek at Learning
Our 3rd graders are strengthening their writing skills by writing about personal experiences and sharing details about their weekends. Students are practicing how to create complete sentences and use important writing conventions such as capital letters, punctuation, and proper indentation. They are also learning to reread their writing and think about whether their sentences clearly communicate their ideas.
💡 Parent Tip:
Encourage your child to keep a short weekend journal at home. Ask them to write 2–3 sentences about something they did and then reread their writing together. Have them check: Did I start with a capital letter? Did I use punctuation? Does my sentence make sense?
📚 5th Grade Math
Our 5th graders are strengthening their understanding of division, including how to solve problems with remainders and, most importantly, how to interpret what a remainder means in a real-world situation. Students are practicing division with larger numbers and using models, equations, and discussion to explain their mathematical thinking. They are learning that the answer to a division equation may not always be the complete answer to a word problem—the context helps determine what the remainder means. 5th graders are also exploring how animals survive in their environments by studying animal adaptations. Students are using vocabulary and information from their Wonders reading to make connections among animals, behaviors, and survival strategies. Through collaborative activities, students are exploring concepts such as hibernation, camouflage, burrowing, insulation, and storing food. They are also practicing explaining how these adaptations help animals survive in challenging environments.
💡 Parent Tip: As you read with your child, ask, “What adaptation does this animal have, and how does it help the animal survive?” Then encourage your child to find a detail from the text that supports their answer. This simple conversation helps build both reading comprehension and scientific thinking. When your child solves a division word problem at home, ask, “What does the remainder mean in this problem?” and “Does the remainder change your answer?” Encourage your child to explain their thinking rather than simply giving the numerical answer.
Looking forward to a productive week ahead,

Directora Mahoney-Curry
