DISTRICT UPDATE
April 2, 2025
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Staff,
As we welcome the arrival of spring (despite the snow this past weekend), our schools are buzzing with activity and excitement. This season brings not only warmer days and new opportunities for growth but also a chance to celebrate the incredible work of our students and staff. Across our district, students are engaged in a variety of projects that showcase their creativity, critical thinking, and dedication to learning. Whether it’s innovative science experiments, meaningful community service initiatives, or impressive performances in the arts, our students continue to inspire us with their hard work and passion. I encourage all families to attend parent-teacher conferences this month.
SCHOOL BUDGET
Please mark your calendar to vote for the 2025-2026 School Budget on Tuesday, June 10th. Although it’s a challenging year, we continue to seek innovative ways to meet budget constraints, and with your support, we can continue making a positive difference for students. A formal public hearing of the 2025-2026 School Budget will be held on Monday, May 5th, from 6:30 to 9:30pm at City Hall or via Zoom (Linked here). The proposed budget is available online (Linked here).
As we move through the final months of the school year, I encourage families to stay engaged, celebrate these achievements, and continue supporting our students and staff. Thank you for being an essential part of our school community—I look forward to all that we will accomplish together this spring!
I wish you all a restful and enjoyable Spring vacation with your families.
My Best,
Jeremy Ray
Superintendent of Schools

SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS & STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS
SMS Students Get a Taste of Real-World Learning
Saco Middle School’s 7th and 8th grade students recently tested their creativity and business skills by developing their own food truck concepts. As part of the Sebago Middle School team, students worked collaboratively to design menus, set pricing, and create marketing materials, gaining valuable experience in budgeting, recipe development, and teamwork.
The project culminated in Sebago Street Eats Night on March 27th, where students proudly showcased their food truck creations to family, friends, and school staff. Attendees had the chance to sample a variety of delicious dishes, from tacos and ramen to waffle ice cream and specialty burgers. Proceeds from the event will support future experiential learning opportunities, continuing to provide students with hands-on, real-world educational experiences.
"This project not only allowed students to explore different business ideas, but also gave them a chance to apply their learning in a meaningful way," said Christine Adams, a teacher on the Saco Middle School Sebago Project-Based Team. Students shared in the excitement, with 8th grader Patrick Williams noting, "I never thought I’d be able to create my own menu and sell my food to people—this project made me feel like a real business owner!"
CK Burns Unified Basketball Team
The CK Burns School’s Unified Team is growing and thriving! This year, 23 students and about ten staff members are staying after school on Mondays and Fridays to practice and build teamwork. Three staff members recently attended Special Olympics training, where they learned new drills to support the athletes. They are especially excited to use the adapted hoops, allowing two scrimmages to run at once—one for those shooting on a ten-foot hoop and another for those needing a shorter hoop. With the CK Burns team doubling in size from last year, they’re looking forward to an exciting season and their first-ever bocce ball games this spring!

Bringing Books to Life: Fairfield and Young Students visit Merrill Auditorium
Students from Fairfield School and Young School recently enjoyed a memorable field trip to Merrill Auditorium to see A Year with Frog and Toad, a story they had read and loved in class. Watching the characters come to life on stage helped reinforce important themes from the book, such as friendship, problem-solving, and perseverance. The experience also gave students a chance to enjoy the excitement of being in a beautiful theater, adding to the fun and learning. This opportunity highlighted how storytelling and the arts can enrich classroom learning in meaningful ways.
Pre-K Book Challenge Inspires a Love for Reading!
The Pre-K Book Challenge is proving to be a tremendous success! Students are eagerly exploring new books and enjoying the rewards they earn along the way. It’s inspiring to see their enthusiasm for reading continue to grow. Even after reaching the 100-book milestone, many children are choosing to keep going—showing a true love for stories and learning.
Thank you to our families and educators for supporting this challenge and fostering a lifelong passion for reading. Keep up the great work, Pre-K readers!

NEW SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Construction planning continues for our two new schools: Saco Primary School (Pre-K/K) and Saco Elementary School (grades 1-5). Our Design Development Submission to the Department of Education on March 10th marked another important landmark in the project. Additionally, at the site of our new schools the initial clearing of trees is underway. We hope to be able to host school board members, councilors, and the public on the site as soon as the weather improves. Design features and specifications for the interior and exterior of the building continue to move forward.

Promoting Dental Health
A big thank you to the team at Biddeford Saco Dental for visiting Fairfield School (and Young School later this month) to teach our students about proper tooth care, making healthy food choices for strong teeth, and what to expect during a dental visit. They also generously provided each student with a tooth care packet to encourage continued healthy habits at home. We appreciate their support in promoting dental health for our students!
