SCHOOL SCOOP
RUBY BRIDGES WALK TO SCHOOL DAY
Our Semple family community along with other BUSD school sites joined thousands of schools around the country to commemorate and celebrate Ruby Bridges Walk To School Day on November 14th, 2024.
Ruby Bridges was one of the first African American children to attend an all white school in the segregated South. This was the 4th year our BUSD schools participated in this important event. It is important to note that Benicia Black Lives Matter (BBLM) partnered with our PTG and the administration at Robert Semple Elementary to hold the first walk and celebration in Benicia to honor this young American heroine and her family. The Bridges family made many sacrifices and bravely risked Ruby’s personal safety to help create a more equitable future for all American children.
We are so proud of our Dragon Community as they continue to lead by example and march in unity to honor Ruby and stand up for ALL of our children to feel a deep sense of belonging!
Thank you to Student Council and DEI committee for making this event happen!

Students visited stations learning about Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, Las Posadas, Lunar New Year and Winter Solstice. Each student took home a goodie bag featuring items from each tradition.

ART DAY
It’s an entire day devoted to creativity! It’s a fun day of celebrating art and an opportunity to enrich creativity by introducing community artists to our students. The day will begin with students walking through the artist open house in the cafeteria. Students will get to see many artists at work. In the afternoon, each Robert Semple student will also get to participate in an artist lead classroom workshop. Over 30 parent and community volunteers will help to make the day a great success.
Art Day started in 1989. After taking a 5-year break during Covid, we are proud to bring this tradition back to Robert Semple Elementary!
