Hello Lincoln Community,

Happy Valentine's Day and Happy Snow Days! The winter weather has come to Woodburn and with it enough ice and snow to have a couple of snow days. While it looks to warm up next week, we hope you've been able to enjoy the snow and wintry weather. As a part of all the fun, we had a snowman pay a visit to the Lincoln playground and it's pictured above in this Newsletter. Although we missed out on celebrating Valentine's Day together, we hope it's a good one for all of you.

Next Monday: Remember that Monday, February 17, is President's Day, a national holiday. With that in mind, we have no school Monday, but we'll be back together on Tuesday next week.

Spirit Week was Cut Short: Even though we only had three days of Spirit Week, it was still a lot of fun. We've included pictures throughout the Newsletter showing students and staff on Animal Print Day, Shine Bright Day, and Hat Day. This Spirit Week is all a part of 28 Days of Kindness during February, and you can see all of the ways we're promoting kindness by reviewing the posted Kindness Challenge calendar.

A 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grade Music Performance: Just before the snow came, on Wednesday evening we had a full house in the Lincoln gym as parents and staff listened to our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders perform a variety of songs. We've included pictures from the event in case you missed it. Looking ahead, our 4th and 5th grade performance is scheduled for March 12th.

Attendance Video: Several members of our Lincoln student council have helped put together a video to promote increased student attendance at Lincoln. We've included a picture link to it below and here too. This work is a part of the many ways our Lincoln students and staff are working to promote excellent attendance. We encourage, celebrate, recognize, and compete to have strong attendance. And, so far all these efforts are working as we've seen a significant increase from last year's attendance rate. Thank you all for doing your part to help our students make these strong attendance gains, and we hope you enjoy the video.

Arts & Literacy Night is Coming Soon: Please mark your calendar for our upcoming Arts & Literacy Night at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, February 26th. That evening we'll be hosting literacy games, a book giveaway, and art stations. Our Lincoln choir and dance group will perform. We'll also have information available for the Woodburn Library and our SMART Readers program. See the attached flyer for this event too.

Questions: As always, please feel free to send your questions or feedback to us at teresa.alfaro@woodburnsd.org or pmcdougal@woodburnsd.org.

Go Dolphins!

Sincerely,

Teresa Alfaro - Principal

Pedestrian Safety Tips When Coming To School and Going Home

Multiple times each year we instruct and remind our students about safety on buses and during the arrival and dismissal process. We also stress the importance of being careful and safe when traveling to and from school and any time when we're out in the community. Here are some of the important points to keep in mind.

  • Walking: Using identified walking paths, obeying all traffic laws/signals, being aware of surroundings, wearing clothes that make you easily seen by cars, share your walking path with your parents so they know, keep eyes and ears open.
  • Biking: Making sure bike is correctly functioning as intended (brakes, reflectors, etc.), make sure you have proper safety gear, obey all traffic laws/signals, be aware of your surroundings, wear clothes that make you easily visible, keep eyes and ears open, use lighting at night, share your path with your parents so they know.
  • Rail Safety: Only cross at designated areas, keep eyes and ears open, be aware of your surroundings, follow all traffic laws/signals.

When Picking Up Your Student(s)

Please follow our designated traffic patterns. Here are some guidelines:

  1. Unless you're in an actual parking spot, be sure to stay in your vehicle.
  2. Similar to at an airport, we can't have unattended vehicles in the driving lanes (this includes the French Prairie MS parking lot too).
  3. Follow staff directions.
  4. Pull up to the forward-most pick up spot.
  5. Take care to always be vigilant when pulling out after picking up your student.

Every Day Matters - Focus on Attendance Every Day Matters - Focus on Attendance

zoom_out_map

This year we are continuing to pay close attention to ensuring that children are present at school regularly, because Every Day Matters.

Setting High Goals: We're focusing on attendance because last year 58% of our students were regular attenders (attended more than 90% of the days) and 42% were chronically absent (attended less than 90% of the days). The 58% was an improvement from the previous year when we had 51% of our students who were regular attenders. For the current school year our school leadership has set the goal to improve from 58% up to 70%. WE CAN DO IT!

So Important: There's a very strong correlation between good attendance and student success in school. Please see the visual below for more information.
