Social Host Liability Laws - Parenting for Prevention
A Social Host is anyone who is in control of the premises and who furnishes alcohol or allows it to be consumed on those premises. This can be you or your teen, and can be your home or other property you control such as a cottage or hotel room.
The Massachusetts Social Host Law states "Whoever furnishes alcohol to a person under 21 years of age shall be punished by a fine of up to $2, 000, or imprisonment for up to a year, or both. You and your child can be charged both civilly or criminally, especially in the event that your child or an underage guest injures themself or another person.
In addition to having ongoing conversations about substance use and your expectations can influence their decisions. If your child is attending a party or event outside your home, you can support them by having a plan for leaving an unsafe situation.
