Weekly Update

Dear Elmore School Families,

We had another great week at the Elmore School! it was a short week with School closed Monday to honor Martin Luther King Jr. We endured some cold and wintery weather as is expected in late January, but Wednesday, under sunny skies, we made our way to Stowe to Ski and Skate for our Winter Wellness program. At some point the clouds came in, but that did not affect the fun we had.

This week, during writing, lessons focused on drafting our introductions and body of our explanatory writing pieces. reading groups focused on fluency and voice and tone and, and during phonics we focused on phoneme grapheme mapping (matching letters to sounds in words).

During math this week, first graders began representing teen numbers with a ten and more ones using connecting cubes. Second graders finished their first section in unit 3 by solving problems involving comparing lengths, and third graders began unit 4 with a focus on division.

This week we went back further in time, to the 1800's, to learn about the Harriet Tubman and how the underground railroad allowed many black slaves in the south to find their way to freedom by escaping, unnoticed, to the North where slavery was not allowed.

Our third afternoon of skiing and Skating at Spruce Peak is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan 28th. Parent Volunteers are Ed Case (skiing and transporting skis/poles) and Amber Carbine-March (skating). The Batchelders are providing a snack.

Family Hot Lunch on Monday (Kristen Soriano) will be Spaghetti. School Hot Lunch is available on Tuesday and Thursday next week. Salads and Sandwiches are available Tuesday - Friday. Please submit lunch orders by 6:00 pm on Sunday.

Please send a full water bottle each day.

In gratitude,

Diane Nicholls
