Team News

  1. Families, we are in the home stretch, if you can believe it! Now is the time to talk to your child about maintaining their progress in school. The teachers ask that you stay diligent in checking Infinite Campus and Canvas regularly so we can all avoid a stressful scramble at the end of the term.

  2. We are so excited to take our team to Discovery Base at Beaumont for an end-of-year camp experience! This will be the first of a few emails from me with important information regarding our trip. If you ever have any questions after reading through the email, please feel free to send me an email at: williams.kelly@wgmail.org

Your student will receive a printed copy of the Hixson Field Trip Form and Beaumont Dietary Notification Form. If those forms do not make it home, they can be found and re-printed HERE. Please complete these forms as soon as possible and return them to me. These forms include important information regarding dietary allergies, restrictions, and medications. Any additional medical concerns can be directed to myself and our school nurse Ms. Erica Brigman (brigman.erica@wgmail.org).

  1. The cost of camp will be $75. Payments can also be made online (https://webster.revtrak.net/camp-wyman-group/#/list) or via cash or check to Sarah Magruder in the Main Office. All camp payments will be due by May 23, 2025.

  2. If you need financial assistance with 6th grade camp fees, please contact Mrs. Constance West (west.constance@wgmail.org), the 6th grade counselor.

I will follow up soon with an additional email outlining information related to our schedule, what to bring, and pick up procedures for the second, long day. We have very exciting and fun activities planned and students will spend most of their day outside and active!

Math

We are finally on our last unit of the year. Unit 10 is all about data and statistics. Instead of a summative assessment, we are doing a summative project. Students have come up with two statistical questions, one numerical and one categorical. They have to ask thirty people their questions to collect the data. Students will be finding the measures of central tendency, creating a dot plot and a five number summary box-and-whisker plot, describing their data, and presenting their findings. Looking forward to summer, if you are interested in having your student practice math, the following website has been created. https://sites.google.com/wgcloud.org/summermathpractice

History

Students have done a fantastic job on their 1920s projects. All parts of the project are due Tuesday. On Tuesday, we will view our museum and learn about what life was like during the Roaring Twenties. Thursday, we will start our new unit on the Great Depression by playing a stock market simulation game. Students will learn about the many causes of the Great Depression and its effects on everyday life.

We are two-thirds finished with The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt as part of our Historical Fiction Unit. The book follows the life of a seventh grader from 1967-1968, with the backdrop of historical events like the Vietnam War, flower children, and the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr all while introducing the protagonist to the works of William Shakespeare. Our class work will explore figurative language use, vocabulary use, and character and plot development.

Upcoming Due Dates:

Reading Log #19 is due Monday, May 05, 2025

Reading Log #20 is due Monday, May 12, 2025

Final comprehension test Monday, May 12, 2025 (tentative date)

Science

The kids have done a lot of good work learning about what happens at plate boundaries. We are taking a test over the results on Monday. They have a very useful study guide to help them and several study opportunities on Canvas.
