A MESSAGE FROM MR. CHAVEZ
Dear Parents & Guardians,
As we welcome warmer weather and more time outdoors, it’s important to be mindful of tick safety. Ticks are commonly found in grassy, wooded, and brushy areas, and they can carry diseases. Here are some key ways to help protect your child from tick bites and what to do if one is found.
Tick Prevention Tips:
- Dress for Protection: Encourage your child to wear long sleeves, pants, and light-colored clothing to easily spot ticks. Tucking pants into socks can also help prevent ticks from reaching the skin.
- Use Tick Repellent: Apply EPA-approved insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or permethrin to clothing and exposed skin, following label directions.
- Stay on Clear Trails: Remind children to avoid tall grass, leaf piles, and wooded areas when playing outside. Stick to trails and open spaces whenever possible.
- Daily Tick Checks: Conduct a thorough tick check after outdoor activities, especially behind the ears, along the hairline, under arms, around the waist, between toes, and behind knees.
What to Do If You Find a Tick:
1. Remove it promptly – Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure.
2. Clean the area – Wash the bite site and hands with soap and water or use rubbing alcohol.
3. Monitor for symptoms – Watch for rash, fever, fatigue, or flu-like symptoms in the following weeks. If symptoms appear, contact a healthcare provider.

HERE is a 6 minute cartoon aimed towards children's education on tick bite and prevention.
By taking these precautions, we can help keep our students safe and healthy while they enjoy the outdoors! If you have any questions or need additional resources, please feel free to reach out.
Estimados padres y tutores:

Take Your Child to Work Day is Thursday, April 24, 2025. This is NOT a PSSA testing date at Richland. Per the district, parents may take their child(ren) to work, and it will be considered an excused absence. If you are planning to have your child attend work with you, please complete this form, and it will count as their excuse note. A new form must be completed for each student. Once you complete this form, you will not need to enter this day into SafeArrival.
Knowing how many students will be present on April 24th helps guide instruction for the day.
Thank you, and have a fun and productive day at work!
