A Note From Our Classrooms
Kindergarten
Kindergarten has had an exciting few weeks, attending 2 different study trips. We visited Garwood's Apple Orchard and Coulter's Pumpkin Patch. We were able to learn all about the life cycles of apples and pumpkins while having lots of fun!
We have also begun learning all about what weather is and will continue to learn how to be prepared for all types of weather in our 2nd Module Unit.
We are continuing to learn our letters and sounds so we can blend sounds together to make words and learn to read and write.
Our math journey is continuing in Unit 3 by learning all about 2d shapes, how to describe them and compare them as well as reviewing counting objects.
Kindergarten is a busy and exciting place with lots of growing and learning taking place.
First Grade
First grade has been diving into different stories about the sun, moon, and stars. We are using different stories to answer the question “Why do authors write about the sun, moon, and stars?” We have also started Unit 3 in math and have been working hard adding and subtracting numbers 0-20.
Second Grade
Second grade is excited to begin Module 2 in Reading soon- all about fossils! We are hoping to visit the Indiana Dinosaur Museum to get a closer look! We will also begin a new unit in Math - Measuring Length. The kids are excited! Our work in Project Lead the Way continues with states of matter. The kids are getting to track data from hands-on lessons using foil, foam, thermometers and lots of other fun stuff.
Third Grade
We’re excited to begin Module 2 – Adaptations and the Wide World of Frogs in reading! Students will explore how frogs survive in different environments and discover the amazing ways animals adapt to their surroundings.
In math, we’re starting multiplication and working on two-step word problems. These skills build strong problem-solving and reasoning abilities. Please help your child by encouraging them to practice their math facts daily at home—even a few minutes each day makes a big difference in building fluency and confidence!
Fourth Grade
How does one's perspective influence his or her opinion? In EL module 3, 4th grade students are considering the answer to this question through the lens of the American Revolution.
In Math, 4th grade is reviewing for the upcoming iLearn checkpoint. Our most current math unit focuses on decimals, place value, and adding and subtracting within 1,000,000.
Fifth Grade
Fifth grade is gearing up for the first iLearn checkpoint reviewing multiplication, division, and volume. They are also starting their second EL module all about the rainforests. They have enjoyed having Mrs. Kutch from Purdue Extension come teach them about food, nutrition, exercise, and other day-to-day healthy habits.
Sixth Grade
The second grading period is in full swing in 6th grade. In math, students are working through our rational numbers unit. They are learning about integers, opposites, absolute value, coordinate planes, and factors and multiples. They will be applying these skills to solve real-world problems. We also will continue our daily spiral review so we can stay sharp on all essential 6th grade math standards.
In ELA, we are continuing to summarize and identify themes in stories. Our new module features the novel, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, where students will explore central ideas, analyze text structures, and take part in many small-group discussions to deepen their connection to the text.
In social studies, we are focused on geography while staying connected to current events with Time for Kids. In science, we are learning about adaptations and we recently competed in the Egg Crash Barker Community STEM Challenge.
Please remind students to use IXL at home to strengthen skills in both ELA and math. As always, encourage nightly reading (20 minutes) and regular math fact practice. Let’s make November another great month of learning and growth!
Mrs. Stoll
Our students in grades 4 through 6 have begun a new weekly writing activity! Each week, they write a four-sentence paragraph on a shared topic as we focus on developing the thinking process behind writing. Using graphic organizers, students learn how to plan and structure their ideas before writing an informational paragraph.
In addition to writing, students are expanding their vocabulary by studying 10 new sight words each week. We review these words daily and discuss how they are used in sentences. For homework, students write sentences using each word correctly. Consistent practice helps reinforce learning—your child knows that repetition builds knowledge, and with continued effort at home, their vocabulary skills will continue to grow!
Specials Team
Mrs. Jongkind in Art
Students are finishing up their shape unit in the art room. Students in grades kindergarten through third worked on various pictures, incorporating shapes into their projects. Fourth, fifth, and sixth grades completed the first stage of a clay project. Soon, their clay projects will be bisque-fired and ready to be glazed. After they are glazed, they will be fired in the kiln a second time, turning the glazes into glass.
Mr. Reiner in P.E.
The gym remains alive with activity and competition as the outdoor weather starts to cool down. In Kindergarten and 1st grade we’ve spent time practicing how to stop and go quickly and in a balanced manner, playing games like simon says and red-light green-light. In 2nd--6th grade we are working on long distance running, and have been doing activities and games that are strengthening our legs, core and endurance, like jump roping, hula hooping, and ladder sprints. Coming up in a few weeks we will run the half mile for 2/3rd and the full mile for 4-6th, and record our times, so that we can see if we have grown when we run it again in the spring!
Welcome Miss DeLeon in Music!!
Hello! I am Ms. De Leon, the new music teacher! The past two weeks, students have been adjusting to the new routine of music class. We have been working on a game called “Pumpkin Patch” and the students really seem to enjoy it! Each grade is working on some form of keeping a steady beat. For example, 5th and 6th grade have been working on the difference between rhythm and steady beat with The Addams Family theme! We are also working on singing more in the classroom, both as a class and individually. Please continue to encourage your students to always try their best!
Going into November, we’re going to continue working on steady beat keeping, but we will also work on learning rounds, reading rhythms, and start learning some folk dances! Kindergarten and 1st graders will be learning a song called “Tideo”, which not only has a pass around game as an activity, but they will also work on keeping a steady beat with instruments!
2nd and 3rd grade will start working on rhythm versus steady beat, and how to read different different rhythms in sheet music!
3rd graders will also be working on a round called “Peace Song”!
4th graders are not only going to be working on reading rhythms and steady beat versus rhythm, but this month we are also going to start working on how to read music! How to read music is my personal favorite thing to teach, so I’m looking forward to these activities!
5th and 6th graders will be working on a round called “Coffee”, reading music, and learning a traditional Mexican folk dance called “Los Machetes”. “Los Machetes” is a folk dance that originated in Jalisco about how agricultural workers in Mexico harvest sugarcane!
With Thanksgiving around the corner, the theme in music class this month will be songs, dances, and activities based on harvests, fall, thankfulness, peace, and so much more! It’s been wonderful working with your students these past two weeks and I’m excited to continue working with them!
Mrs. Glowski
This month I am visiting all of our classrooms to deliver our Second Step Bullying Prevention Unit. These lessons help students understand what bullying is and how to respond safely and respectfully. Using the “Bully Prevention – 3 R’s” students are learning to:· Recognize when bullying is happening: Including how to tell the difference between mean, rude and bullying behavior· Report bullying to a caring adult · Refuse bullying in a way that is assertive and Respectful· Use their Bystander Power: Be Respectful, Kind and Stand up for Others.
In collaboration with our Student Council, we are celebrated Red Ribbon Week 2025. The theme was “Life is a Puzzle, Solve it DRUG FREE!” This theme was chosen to highlight that every choice is a piece of the bigger picture and that living a drug-free life helps build a healthier future.

Sharing of any food(chips, candy, cakes) from home is not allowed as well per the Board of Trustees wellness plan. We want to keep all students safe from all known and unknown allergies.
