Dear Newport Schools Parents, Families, and Staff:

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday filled with good times with family and friends, and good food!

I know that our community is still grappling with the totally unacceptable behavior of several members of the Rogers football team. The Newport Police Department has arrested four students involved in these incidents and is continuing their investigation. On November 26th, the Newport School Committee also voted unanimously to conduct an independent investigation. School Committee Chair James Dring shared this statement about the purpose of the investigation:

Chair Jim Dring:

The independent review will focus on the school system’s response to the reported incidents, including:

Whether procedures were properly followed;

Where communication or oversight broke down;
What systemic issues may have contributed; and
What corrective actions are required.

This investigator will work on our behalf to answer the many questions the community is asking. First, we need the facts. Between the Police Department’s criminal investigation and our independent review of what happened inside our schools, I am confident that we will be able to provide a full accounting to our community by the end of next month.

And I will say again: We will make sure no incident like this ever happens again.

I will be sure to update everyone once these investigations are complete so that we can begin to understand how this happened and what steps we need to take as a school district, and as a community to heal, improve, and provide the best for our students and families.

Continuing on, I want to send a big thank you to all of the parents who took time out of their busy schedules on Monday to attend parent-teacher conferences. There is no better way to be an engaged parent than speaking with your child’s teachers about how they are doing in the classroom.

Let’s keep that involvement up at home by speaking with your child every day about how their school day went. Be sure to take the time to ask how each of their classes are going, if they need any help, and how they are doing with their friends and afterschool activities. A little conversation goes a long way to letting your child know how important school is and that you’re there for him/her in their educational journey. Ask questions, talk about school, and continue to stress to your child how important a good education is for now and in the future.

As always it’s essential that we continue to focus on Attendance Matters, Every Day. We are in the heart of the second academic quarter at Thompson and Rogers, and Pell students are finishing their first trimester tomorrow. Not only is attendance critical for academics, it is a great time for our students to showcase their many other talents during our many wonderful holiday related school and afterschool activities over the next two weeks. From holiday concerts, to tree decorating, to holiday crafts, there’s no shortage of opportunities to get into the holiday spirit. Check out our Arts Calendar for a full listing of December events.

Have a great week of learning everyone and thank you for supporting Newport Public Schools!

Thompson NOSOLO Team Building Assembly Thompson NOSOLO Team Building Assembly

All Thompson Middle School students in grades 5-8 recently participated in the first NOSOLO Team Building Assembly of the year. NOSOLO Ambassador, Newport Hospital’s Dr. Marina Zambrotta, spoke with the students about the importance of kindness and the need to have a community in order to reach their goals. The NOSOLO message, "Never Forget How Many People Truly Have Your Back. Lean on Them. Check on Them" was reinforced while students practiced working with and leaning on members of their communities in order to complete Team Building challenges. Teams of students in Grades 5 and 6 were challenged with building the "Longest Paper Chain Link" in 8 minutes, while students in grades 7 and 8 were challenged with building 8 versions of "Kindness Towers" without using their hands. A good time was had by all, while students experienced the value of working as a team within a community of support. Principal Browner also spoke with the students about the value of being present and participating in our TMS community. Great job Warriors!
