Nichole Haynes

Join us as we welcome Nichole Haynes to the Murray State University faculty as the new dietetic internship director and instructor. Haynes is a registered dietitian with over 10 years of experience in clinical roles including acute care, long term care and outpatient specialties. She has over seven years of experience in supervisory and management roles in the healthcare field.

Haynes earned her Bachelor of Science in dietetics from Western Kentucky University in 1999 and completed her dietetic internship in Arizona in 2001. She obtained her Master of Science in human sciences in nutrition in 2011 and is currently working toward a second master’s degree in management in organizational leadership and development at Middle Tennessee State University. She expects to complete her degree fall 2022.

“My favorite classes to teach include the introduction to nutrition course for undergraduates and the courses that align with the internship program for our graduate students,” said Haynes when asked about her favorite courses to teach. “In the undergraduate course, we get to explore many different facets of nutrition that span from the introduction of macronutrient and micronutrients to food safety and sustainability worldwide. In the graduate courses, we focus on advancing practice skills and knowledge in preparation for professional careers in the field.”

Haynes grew up in western Kentucky, and has lived in many other states over the past twenty years. She recently moved back to the area to be closer to her family and to begin her role with Murray State. She enjoys spending time with her two beautiful nieces, Ella and Ava; having fun, playing board games and reading to them.

One of her longest held interests is travelling to new places, both nationally and internationally. This past summer Haynes travelled to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks as well as Jackson Hole. She has also traveled abroad to Puerto Rico, Peru, St. Maarten, Italy, France and England. Locally she has enjoyed discovering and exploring the nearby state parks, and hiking new trails with her pup, KD.

Bellarmine University bake sale to benefit nursing students

On Feb. 14 and 15 students from the Bellarmine Association for Student Nurses (BANS) and Bellarmine nursing faculty organized a bake sale to benefit Murray State University nursing students impacted by the tornado. During the bake sale they raised enough money to give $150 visa gift cards to the students affected by the tornado: Sydney Vinson, Callie Hines, Alisha McCormick and Britney Ellis. Thanks to a late donation each student will also receive $10 Kroger gift cards. To all of the volunteers who donated their time and energy, thank you.

“We thought it was so important to help other students,” said Bev Bone, Bellarmine University nursing instructor and 1982 Murray State BSN graduate. “Nursing school is challenging enough without going through such a destructive tornado.”

Hazel Lion’s Club donations to benefit nursing students

On Feb. 17 the Hazel Lion’s Club determined that the $1,000 in donations they received for tornado relief efforts would go to assist individuals in the community. Four Murray State University nursing students; Britney Ellis, RN-BSN; Sydney Vinson, nursing; Alisha McCormick, nursing; and Callie Hines, nursing; were selected to receive gift cards.

“I am happy to announce that we will be presenting each of the students with a $250 Walmart gift card to purchase things they still need,” said Jodi Hanneman, Hazel Lion’s Club vice president. “I’ve been amazed by the generosity of the local community. People have really pitched in to help each other out.”

During one of the Hazel Lion’s Club’s prior trips to purchase food and other necessities, Hanneman noted that some fellow shoppers even donated money on the spot after finding out who they were purchasing items for. At one of their glasses collection points, generous donors even brought volunteers snacks as a way to say “thank you” during a long day of volunteering.

Thank you to all of the generous donors, and to the Hazel Lion’s Club, for their generosity and hard work in making this possible.
