📣 Families! Here's What's Happening This Week:
📚 First Grade Learning This Week
Math: Building and Solving Number Bonds
First graders are learning how numbers can be broken apart into parts that make a whole. Students are using number bonds, equations, and counting-on strategies to find missing numbers and solve addition problems. They are also beginning to notice that numbers can be rearranged in an addition equation while keeping the same sum—for example, 1 + 7 = 8 and 7 + 1 = 8.
Ohio Learning Standard:
Ohio’s Learning Standards for Mathematics – Grade 1, 1.OA.C.6: Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Students use strategies such as counting on and understanding relationships between numbers to solve problems.
At Home Tip:
Practice with everyday objects such as cereal pieces, coins, or small toys. Give your child a number and ask them to find different ways to make it. For example, “Can you make 8 using two groups?” Then ask, “How do you know?” Encourage your child to explain their thinking rather than just give the answer.
📖 Reading: Short-Vowel Words and Decoding
First graders are strengthening their ability to read and spell words with short-vowel sounds. Students are stretching words sound by sound, blending the sounds together, and connecting printed words to their meanings. They are working with words such as bag, pin, pen, pot, sun, map, and top. Students are also applying what they know about sentences by using capital letters and periods.
Ohio Learning Standard:
Ohio’s Learning Standards for English Language Arts – Grade 1, RF.1.3: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
At Home Tip:
When reading together, choose a few short-vowel words and have your child stretch, blend, and read each word. If your child reads pin as pen, ask, “What vowel sound do you hear in the middle?” Then have them reread the word. Keep the focus on listening for the vowel sound and blending the sounds together.
📚 Second Grade Learning This Week: Informational Writing
This week, second-grade students are learning to write informational sentences about how pumpkins grow. Students are using information from informational texts and observations of real pumpkins to describe the pumpkin life cycle and identify what pumpkins need to grow, including sunlight, water, and soil.
Students are practicing writing complete sentences that communicate a clear thought, adding details from a text, and rereading their work to check that their sentences make sense. They are also building independence by sharing their writing with partners and making corrections as they revise.
Ohio Learning Standard
Ohio Learning Standards for English Language Arts – Grade 2: W.2.2 (Informative/Explanatory Writing)
Write informative/explanatory texts that introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.
🏡 Parent Tip: Grow Writers at Home
Invite your child to explain how a pumpkin grows. Ask questions such as, “What does a pumpkin seed need to grow?” and “What happens after the plant begins to grow?” Encourage your child to write three sentences about the process. Remind them to use capital letters, ending punctuation, and complete thoughts. Have your child read each sentence aloud to check that it makes sense.
4th Grade Math: Learning Update
This week, fourth-grade students are working on multi-step word problems that require them to use multiplication and division to solve real-world situations. Students are practicing how to determine which operations to use, solve problems accurately, and explain their mathematical thinking. They are also building their ability to work through problems involving groups, quantities, and equal sharing.
Ohio Learning Standard: 4.OA.A.3
Solve multistep word problems involving whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity.
Parent Tip: Ask your child to solve a real-life problem involving multiplication and division. For example: “There are 24 boxes with 11 pencils in each box. If the pencils are shared equally among 8 classrooms, how many pencils will each classroom receive?” Encourage your child to explain each step and how they know their answer makes sense. What a great learning Week!
Have a safe and wonderful weekend,
