Rattler Recap – Week of September 21

The Play That Went Right! The Play That Went Right!

The San Marcos Rattler Theatre Company brought The Play That Goes Wrong: High School Edition to the stage at the San Marcos HS Performing Arts Center—and it was every bit as chaotic, hilarious, and wonderfully WRONG as promised!

Thank you to everyone who came out September 23–25, shared some laughs, and supported our performers. Congratulations to the students and SMHS teachers Tommie Jackson and Emily Rohrman on a successful week!

A special thank-you to everyone who donated unopened hygiene products and non-perishable foods. Your generosity will help support local community centers and make a difference in our community.

SWIMply the Best SWIMply the Best

The first meet of the season is officially in the books! Our San Marcos Rattlers took on the New Braunfels Unicorns and Dragons in the NBISD vs. SMCISD Pentathlon, kicking off a new season filled with hard work, team spirit and plenty of opportunities to make a splash! From the first race to the final touch, our swimmers showed the excitement and energy that comes with a new season. Here’s to chasing personal bests, cheering on teammates and making memories along the way!

And there’s even more to look forward to! A huge thank you to SMCISD voters who supported the successful passage of Bond 2023 – you all are making the future of Rattler swimming possible. The new SMHS Natatorium, featuring a competition pool and space for water safety instruction, is set to be completed this fall. The future is looking bright — and we’re ready to dive in!

Bubble Trouble? Our Engineers Are on the Case! Bubble Trouble? Our Engineers Are on the Case!

Mendez Strikers in Ms. Hamby's class put their engineering skills to the test with a hands-on challenge: design, create and test a bubble wand! Students had to think like engineers as they explored how the shape, size and structure of their designs affected the bubbles they could produce. Through testing and redesigning, they practiced the engineering design process—ask, imagine, plan, create, test and improve. The goal wasn’t just to make bubbles—it was to use creativity, problem-solving and evidence from testing to improve a design. That’s engineering in action!

Rattler Voices Rise: 30 Advance to Region Rattler Voices Rise: 30 Advance to Region

This Saturday, the San Marcos High School Choir program took 45 singers to Churchill High School in San Antonio to participate in the TMEA District Choir Auditions!

This event marks Round 1 of the 4-step All-State Choir audition process, and we are incredibly proud to announce that 30 Rattler singers are advancing to Region Auditions (Round 2) on October 24! We want to congratulate ALL of our students on having the courage to step forward, prepare, and share their voices. Auditioning takes dedication and bravery, and we are proud of every student who participated. To those advancing—best of luck as you prepare a brand-new set of music for the next round! We can't wait to see what you accomplish.

Thank you to our families, friends, and community for your continued support of our Rattler Singers! And a special shoutout to Dawn Sheridan and Brigitte Smith for the constant support, encouragement, and dedication you give to our SMHS singers.

Nursery Rhymes Come to Life! Nursery Rhymes Come to Life!

Our Kindergarten students at De Zavala Elementary brought their nursery rhyme lessons to life with a fun Nursery Rhyme Parade!

After learning about beloved nursery rhymes in the classroom, our little learners had the opportunity to celebrate their learning by dressing up as their favorite nursery rhyme characters and sharing their creativity with our school community.

We loved seeing our Kindergarteners learn, imagine, and bring their learning to life!

Science Skills that Go Beyond the Test! Science Skills that Go Beyond the Test!

Students in Mr. Campbell's 8th-grade science lab rotated through Short Constructed Response (SCR) stations, where they analyzed prompts and rubrics, evaluated sample responses, and wrote responses of their own.

Yes, SCR is a tested item on the Science STAAR—but Mr. Campbell wants students to see the bigger picture. The ability to make a claim and support it with evidence is a skill they’ll use long after they leave the classroom—whether they’re making a case in a future career, justifying a major purchase, or making an informed decision in everyday life. It’s not just about answering a question. It’s about knowing how to back up what you say with evidence.

This week, Intro to Human Services CTE students in Mrs. Vasquez’s class at Miller Middle School explored their fashion design unit! After learning how to sew buttons and stitch fabric pieces together, students put those skills into action by designing, cutting fabric, and sewing their very own stuffed animals.

It was exciting to see their creativity, confidence, and growing sewing skills come together in these fun, hands-on projects!

Interim Superintendent Dr. Sonya Rodriguez spent time connecting with the SMCISD Leadership Team, getting to know the dedicated leaders who serve our students, staff, and families each day.

The gathering was an opportunity to learn more about our district, hear from our leaders, and share norms and expectations that will help guide our work together. Most importantly, it was a chance to begin building relationships and fostering a strong sense of teamwork across SMCISD.

We’re excited for the conversations, collaboration, and connections ahead!

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month—a time to remind one another that no one has to face difficult moments alone. If you’re struggling, feeling overwhelmed, or having thoughts of suicide, please speak up. Talk to your counselor, a trusted adult, teacher, family member, or someone you feel safe with. You don’t have to have the right words or know exactly what to say. Simply saying, “I’m not okay” is enough to start the conversation.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Help is available 24/7, free and confidential. You matter. Your voice matters. Reaching out is a sign of strength, and help is available.
