Weekly Update

Team Shaffer!

This week is one of my favorite weeks of the school calendar. The Fun Run is the elementary equivalent of Homecoming week in high school. Every day is a spirit day, every day there are prizes, and on Friday there is a huge event that is an absolute blast. It's importance is two-fold:

• First, it is a great opportunity to come together as a school community and do something fun. For those of you who joined us on Wednesday for our assembly, you were able to experience ear splitting screaming, Dinger, and some really terrible dancing by one Shaffer principal (it wasn't Soich). These times bring our students together and let them see for a second that they are not a bunch of isolated classes, but an entire school-body. It's a chance for kindies to see how big their school is and for 5th graders to see that they really are the biggest kids in the building. Next Friday will be more of the same. These shared experiences where all students can take part only increase belonging and a sense of community for all involved.
• Second, the Fun Run is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Our amazing and brilliant PTA put so much time into this event and their efforts combined with our students' puts our school in a place financially that makes a significant difference at Shaffer. The new sun shades we have on the playground, the new basketball baskets and nets, and Playworks are all largely funded by the money raised during the Fun Run. We are kicking around some fun ideas to make Shaffer even better, and the time and effort you and your family put into this event truly makes a difference.

I'm really looking forward to a great week at Shaffer and am so appreciative to be a part of it.

It's a great day to be a Pioneer!

We, the Shaffer Community, have been asked by District Transportation to do a few things to expedite bus departure time as well as in ensure student safety:

1. If you are parking in the front lot during pick up time, please be aware of when the buses are pulling away. We nearly had a few accident last week as cars tried to pull out in between buses.
2. Please do not park all the way up to the corners of Sangre de Cristo and the bus loop. It is difficult for the buses to make that turn, and when buses have to do 4 point turns, it increases the chances of people get hurt and cars getting hit.

One of the best opportunities provided by Shaffer is that students are given opportunities for authentic leadership. There are still openings for Morning Announcer, Stand Up Comic, and Lunch Choice Captain! Sign-up for student leadership jobs can be found on the Shaffer Elementary website under "Student Leadership Roles". Click on the "Sign Up Now!" icon to sign up for the leadership position your child is most interested in.

Our annual PTA Fun Run is coming up October 4. The PTA does amazing work to put on this event and it is so much fun every year. Additionally, the Fun Run is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year and will help us make Shaffer even better. The day is like a holiday and the energy is HIGH! We can't wait.

Below are important dates for the Fun Run:

• Monday, September 30 - Spirit Week Begins (see flyer below for more information)
• Friday, October 4 - FUN RUN! (Schedule)
