Zeneta and Zaire's Book Wishlist

For those of you who attended the NYLA/SSL conference, this was shared at the end of the business meeting on Saturday morning. For those that did not attend, please see below. If you've been wondering what might you do to make a difference since the horrific event in Buffalo on May 14th, please see below:

When a white supremacist opened fire at a Buffalo grocery store on Saturday, May 14th, Zeneta Everhart's son Zaire was the first person shot. Zaire was helping an elderly woman with her cart, when he was shot in the neck. By a miracle, he survived. 10 others were targeted and killed simply because of the color of their skin. When asked how our country can do better, Zeneta repeated one thing: educating our children. From a young age, she says kids need to learn about race and racism and black history, so that we can foster a new generation of inclusive and compassionate leaders. By purchasing a book from this list, you're investing in that vision. Zeneta and Zaire will distribute these books to community centers, schools, and local organizations to start these conversations at a grassroots level here in Buffalo, N.Y. Find the list of books here if you wish to donate to this worthy cause. You can also support a local black owned bookstore in Buffalo by purchasing titles for this effort from them. 2022 SSLMA Librarian of the Year

Dr. Cathy Masrour, the librarian at Smithtown High School West in the Smithtown School District, was nominated by librarian Noelle Eichenlaub. Cathy is described as an innovative leader who is eager to take charge and explore innovative and creative ways to reach students and staff. She values learning and growth as a librarian, visiting libraries around the world and incorporating things she learns about into Smithtown West’s library to benefit her students. She advocated for and designed a high-tech STEM lab, leads a Makerspace Club, spearheaded a buddy program with ENL students from one of the districts elementary schools, and lunch and learns, where students and staff could attend presentations about new technology.

Cathy’s work is not only limited to her library. She is also the founder of the Three Village STEM Enrichment Foundations and has also served on the board of the Long Island Library Resources Council (LILRC). Cathy’s dedication to her students and our profession makes her well-deserving of this award. Congratulations Cathy!

Book Review

Bathe the Cat by Alice B. McGinty and illustrated by David Roberts is a fun, laugh out loud picture book about a family trying to finish their chores. The cat, who does not want to take a bath, steps on their magnetic letter to-do list and hilarity ensues. This book would be a great text to incorporate with lessons using magnetic letters! A further description of the book can be found here.

New Technology & Resources to Share....

This winter SSLMA hosted a Digital Citizenship roundtable discussion. Members submitted questions and resources were shared. A Google Doc of the resources were compiled and can be viewed at this link.
