Welcome to Spring!

Welcome to March and springtime. I feel like each of these newsletters brings another statement about the year that we have had. It is hard to believe that we have endured so much in the last year. I hope this Spring brings a sense of renewal and that we can begin to see life becoming more "normal" again. If there is one thing I have learned about educators and people in general this last year, it is that we are resilient and able to adapt when the need arises. In the midst of hardship, change and crisis, there are always stories of people stepping up to help one another, check on each other and create better opportunities for society at large.

I wish you the best this month and hope that your Spring Break is relaxing, restful and rejuvenating.

Upcoming News: Stay tuned and Save The Date for our 2nd Annual Metroplex Social Studies Conference to be held virtually June 22nd and June 23rd. Our theme this year is "Owning the New Normal". Details coming soon regarding presentation proposals and registration. We hope to see you again this year.

As always, I would like to help in any way that I can to take something off your plate. Please feel free to reach out any time for a resource, idea, or support of any kind.

If your role is to develop a Social Studies curriculum for your district, please join us for a series of monthly cohort meetings this spring to explore the process of implementing Ethnic Studies courses (specifically the Mexican-American and African-American Studies courses) in your district. If you have already implemented these courses, we encourage you to join in and share your experiences as well as learn new ideas to implement next year. We will discuss proposal ideas, planning the courses, instructional resources, and strategies for teaching with cultural sensitivity. Find support from educators in both Region 10 and Region 11 to create a curriculum that will be ready to implement in the 2021-2022 school year.

11 Strategies for Remote and Hybrid Teaching

11 Strategies for Remote and Hybrid Teaching

A year into the COVID-19 pandemic, we know that many educators are continuing to teach partially or fully online, even as more schools in the United States are slowly shifting towards in-person learning. Hybrid and remote teaching requires educators to navigate new ways to connect with students during an immensely challenging and uncertain time in our communities, when students’ (and teachers’ own) social-emotional needs are just as critical as academic goals. We have adapted a collection of teaching strategies to support online learning, with a focus on sustaining community, supporting students, and creating engaging, meaningful learning experiences.
