What is the Socrates Science Foundation? What is the Socrates Science Foundation?

The Socrates Science Foundation was created to raise funds and community awareness to open a Charter High School that focuses on Agricultural, Environmental and Animal Science. Students will be taught via hands-on learning, giving them applicable skills for a career and/or post-secondary education by graduation.

All students in grades 9 and 10 will take introductory courses covering all of the aforementioned courses in addition to their general education classes (math, English and Social Studies) and on-site community service. Coursework will be cross-curricular. Data from our greenhouses and hydroponics systems will be used in our Algebra and other math courses. Students will not only learn how to be stewards for the environment, they will also learn the history of Environmental studies and how to prevent making the mistakes of earlier generations.

Agricultural classes will be responsible for growing food that will be utilized in our school lunches and cooking classes. The Animal Science classes will care for and run the on-site animal adoption facility while learning about animal nutrition, conformation, care and basic first aid. English classes will be responsible for writing the animal bios that are used on the adoption website. Everything is full circle.

By their junior year, students will decide which pathway they would like to pursue, leading to an internship during their senior year. All students will have the opportunity to take college classes; Highly motivated students will have the ability to earn their Associates degree by the time they graduate high school.

Too old or young to go to high school but you're interested in learning the same things? No worries! The SSF will run summer camps and community programs throughout the year to continue our mission of education.

Looking for a Potential Property Looking for a Potential Property

The Socrates Science Foundation was in negotiations with the Tamaqua Borough for a lease of the Rabbit Run Reservoir property. There were several concerns raised by township supervisors and community members over the plans for the property. The Tamaqua community has been very supportive of the charter school however, not at the Rabbit Run Reservoir site. Ultimately, the SSF decided to terminate the lease negotiations with the Borough to look for a property that meets the needs of the future charter school in a location where the school will be welcomed.

We are currently seeking a property for the Socrates Science Charter High School. The preliminary campus plan requires 10+ acres, preferably within the coal region of Schuylkill county, although western Carbon and southern Luzerne counties are also being considered. Existing buildings and/or water and sewer are a bonus. A mixture of woods and fields would be ideal, preferably with wetland or water features so the Environmental education aspect can primarily be taught on site. Fallow and/or unproductive farm fields could be a perfect fit as well as reclaimed land or brownfield sites. Abandoned buildings and eyesore properties are also possible options. Please reach out if you have a potential site in mind: info@socratessciencefoundation.org

The location of the property for the future SSCHS determines which district we apply to, therefore the SSF has decided to withhold the charter application until the Fall of 2027.

The Socrates Science Foundation will be as transparent as possible throughout the process. Please scroll down to find a link for our general informational meeting on September 1st if you have any questions or would like to know the most updated information.

Founder Bio: Founder Bio:

My name is Jen Clinton and I have been in education for 19 years, working in both charter and traditional school districts. What started out as a career teaching high school Biology morphed into a love for ESL (English as a Second Language) students which prompted me to earn a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and K-12 Principal Certificate. I have a long history of interest in Agriculture, Environmental, Animal Science, Experiential Learning and Challenge by Choice. My plan is to utilize all of my background knowledge (along with the knowledge of other interested persons) to create a high school where students learn Science through experience, and hopefully discover their passion.
