Gunn Mission Statement Gunn Mission Statement

Titans are self-reliant learners empowered to better themselves and their communities.

Words from Wendy

Dear Titan Families,

The 2025-26 school year is well underway, marked by new student orientations, administrative assemblies, a school-wide barbecue, our first Principal's Coffee, and a well-attended welcome-back dance, among other exciting events. Thank you to the many parent volunteers who supported these important community-building events.

On Thursday night, you are encouraged to join us for Back to School Night ("BTSN"), where you can experience your students' school day and meet their teachers. BTSN offers the opportunity for you to put names to faces, get to know teachers, and better understand their expectations and plan for the semester/year. Please arrive at the main quad just before 6:00 for our administrative welcome, which will include guidance on navigating the campus throughout the evening.

I look forward to spending time with our school community —and welcoming you to Gunn on Thursday evening.

In the spirit of cultivating community and belonging,

Wendy

Back To School Night

Teachers, counselors, and administrators warmly invite parents and guardians to our Back-to-School Night, scheduled for this Thursday, August 29, at 6:00 p.m. We encourage you to walk, bike, or carpool because parking will be very limited. Overflow parking will be available at Fletcher Middle School. The schedule for the evening is below:

  • Principal’s Welcome 6:00 - 6:15, Senior Quad

  • Period 0/8/SELF 6:25 - 6:35

  • Period 1: 6:43 - 6:53

  • Period 2: 7:01 - 7:11

  • Period 3: 7:19 - 7:29

  • Period 4: 7:37 - 7:47

  • Period 5: 7:55 - 8:05

  • Period 6: 8:13 - 8:23

  • Period 7: 8:31 - 8:41

  • Campus Closes

5 Back To School Night Pro Tips:

1. Wear comfortable shoes and anticipate many steps!

2. Ask your student for a hard copy, or take a photo of their schedule (they will produce these in classes this week). You will be following your student's schedule throughout the evening.

3. If your phone does not have a flashlight, consider bringing a small one as sunset occurs at 7:45 pm. The parking lot lights will turn on; however, depending on which building you exit, there may be areas with less lighting.

4. Make a point to visit the tables that will be set up around the quad to learn about ways you can engage and support Gunn. BTSN is a great networking opportunity, where you can explore our school, meet other parents, and learn about your student's teacher's goals and expectations for each class.

5. Save yourself the stress and consider parking at Fletcher and/or walking to avoid the inevitable mass exodus at the end of the evening!

Alternate Schedules

Our alternate schedules are all noted on the Gunn Calendar. They can also be accessed via this alternate schedules document. Please note that this is a 'live' document, and subject to change, so we recommend checking it frequently.

Attendance Office Reminders

Gunn High School Attendance Reminders

  1. Early Dismissals for Appointments
If your student needs to leave early for an appointment, a parent or guardian must call or email the attendance office at least 24 hours in advance. Your student will then be excused to meet you directly—you do not need to come to the office to check them out.

    • Email: Gunn-Attendance@pausd.org

  2. Attendance Corrections
If your student believes there is a discrepancy in their attendance record, they have two options:

    • Pick up a yellow attendance correction form from the main office and have their teacher sign it.

    • Ask their teacher to email the attendance office directly with the correction.

  3. Prior Approved Absences
Prior approved absence forms must be submitted to the attendance office at least 24 hours in advance. These forms are available on the attendance office webpage

Gunn Cell Phone Policy

Gunn High School Cell Phone & Electronic Device Use Policy 2025-2026

Purpose:
This policy ensures that students use electronic communication devices (ECDs) to support learning while minimizing distractions and promoting well-being. It balances the educational benefits of technology with healthy digital habits and focus in the classroom.

Development:
This updated policy is the product of our 2024–25 Cell Phone Ad Hoc Committee, which met seven times and included students and parents from every grade level, as well as classified and certificated staff members. The committee’s recommendations reflect a collaborative effort to support learning, well-being, and school culture.

1. General Policy:

  • By default, ECDs are not allowed in class unless explicitly approved by the teacher.

  • This includes phones, laptops, tablets, cameras, and other communication devices.

  • Violations of classroom phone policies will result in progressive consequences (see Section 6).

2. Educational Use in Class:

  • Phones may be used for educational purposes only, as directed by the teacher (e.g., research, apps, collaboration, class projects).

  • Teachers indicate when phone use for educational purposes is permitted using a traffic-light system: green = OK, yellow = limited/ask, red = no phones.

3. Non-Educational Use:

  • Phones may be used during passing periods and lunch, outside instructional time.

  • Students should use devices mindfully, avoiding overuse that may interfere with social interactions, focus, or well-being.

4. Health and Well-Being:

  • Excessive phone use can negatively affect sleep, focus, and mental health.

  • Students are encouraged to:

    • Take regular breaks from devices.

    • Engage in physical activity or face-to-face interactions.

    • Monitor screen time and maintain balance.

  • The school provides education on the impact of screen time and strategies for healthy device use.

5. Emergency Use:

  • Phones should only be used during emergencies if authorized by staff.

  • Students must follow school safety protocols in any emergency.

6. Student Responsibility and Consequences:

  • Students are responsible for their devices; the school is not liable for lost, stolen, or damaged items.

Progressive consequences for non-educational phone use in class:

  1. First offense: Teacher reminder.

  2. Second offense: The teacher may collect the device for the remainder of the period.

  3. Repeated offenses: Device sent to the office; returned at the end of the day. Additional disciplinary actions may apply.

7. Support for Teachers, Students, and Parents:

  • Teacher support: PD on integrating technology effectively and managing classroom norms.

  • Parent education: Sessions on healthy device use and screen-time management.

  • Student feedback: Opportunities to provide input on the policy via surveys, forums, or student-led initiatives.
