CES Weekly Communicator
Issue #34: April 25, 2025
Principal Corner
Good afternoon, Chapelfield families.
We have a lot to celebrate at Chapelfield. Our Bronze PBIS award banner was hung last week! Check out it by the K-1 playground fence! We are so proud of everyone's hard work in PAWS.
As a community, we ended with 287 families that took our Title 1 survey! It was great to read through the data to help us plan for the 2025-2026 school year. We will share a summary of the data at our PTO meeting on Tuesday, May 6 at 7 p.m. Stay tuned to when the Kona Ice Truck will visit us during recess.
Thursday, we had a great turnout at the final Skate Night of the year! There were many smiles and people helping each get balanced on skates.
Today, we ended the week being in our PBIS Packs! We made stress balls. The end of the school year with assessments, changes in grades, and later nights, can bring some stress to students as well as families. Ask your child about what they made today and how they can use this tool to help them regulate their emotion. Maybe they can teach you how to use it!
We also had CES seniors come back to put on a breakfast for the CES teachers they had many years ago!
Finally, we finished testing 3rd and 5th grade in the Ohio State Test in Math. Next week, 4th grade takes their Math OST and 5th grade takes their Science OST. Please see the schedule down below. We are also beginning our NWEA MAP testing. These assessments help us see how much students have grown in 1 year. Our students are showing their Positive attitude and Hard Work during these assessments! We are so proud of them.
Have a great weekend.
Sincerely,
Nikki Miller
Title 1 Survey
We did it! We met our goal of having 80% of our families complete the Title 1 survey! We are securing the Kona Ice Truck! Thank you for giving us this valuable information and thank you to our PTO for having a sweet treat for us. We will talk about it at our next PTO meeting!
Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Jasin
Hello Families!
Here is a recap of topics discussed this month in classroom guidance lessons. In Kindergarten and First Grade, we learned a new calming technique called EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), also known as "tapping." EFT involves gently tapping on specific points on the body—like the side of the hand or the top of the head—while saying words that help children name their feelings and feel more in control.
We read the book Gorilla Thumps and Bear Hugs by Alex Ortner which gives kids a playful and easy way to understand how tapping works and why it helps.
Tapping can be especially helpful when children are feeling anxious, frustrated, or overwhelmed. It’s a simple tool they can use at school, at home, or anywhere they need a moment to reset.
Here’s a sample tapping script we use when a student is feeling worried:
Step 1: Tap the side of the hand (karate chop point) while saying:
“Even though I feel worried right now, I’m okay, and I’m learning how to feel better.”
(Repeat 2–3 times.)
Step 2: Tap through the following points while repeating simple phrases:
Eyebrow: “This worried feeling.”
Side of the eye: “I feel it in my body.”
Under the eye: “It’s okay to feel worried sometimes.”
Under the nose: “I’m safe right now.”
Chin: “I can handle this.”
Collarbone: “I’m doing the best I can.”
Under the arm: “This worry is starting to fade.”
Top of the head: “I’m calm and strong.”
After tapping, students are encouraged to take a deep breath and check in with how they feel. Often, just a few rounds can bring noticeable relief. I encourage you to have your child show you and try it, I'd love to hear about how it's being used at home! There are a variety of videos on Youtube that can guide you through it.
In Second Grade, we learned all about careers! We read Jobs People Do and then explored a variety of careers while discussing the different types of tools used in each different career. Students created tools out of Play-Doh for careers such as a carpenter, baker, photographer, nurse, and many more!
In Third Grade, students were introduced to careers, learned the main elements of a career (daily tasks, work setting, lifestyle, training/education) and how these elements help determine if the career is a good fit. We also discussed how our interests in careers change over time. Students then created a career interest inventory to begin thinking about a path they may want to take. We had a blast discussing future options!
In Fourth Grade, students took a career cluster inventory. While the results of the inventory may or may not dictate the career they will have in the future, it provides them information about their own interests and how these might relate to careers later. Ask your child which was their highest career cluster and which job(s) they are interested in within that cluster.
Fifth Grade students took the Panorama Survey. I will be in those classrooms for one last classroom guidance lesson in May before they soar off to middle school!
GRIN provides weekend snack bags to be sent home on Fridays for families in need. If this is something you would be interested in, please email me at jasink@gjps.org.
If you have a social, emotional concern for your child that impacts them while they are at school and would like to share this with me to see how we can help support your child, please reach out to me at jasink@gjps.org.
Best,

Visitors
We kindly ask that ALL visitors follow the steps below each and every time you visit Chapelfield:
1. Once at the front, exterior doors of the school, press the buzzer. A member of the office staff will ask your reason for visiting Chapelfield.
2. Once inside the vestibule, you will enter your drivers' license or state ID into the scanner. ALL visitors/guests/guardians need to scan their drivers license EACH and EVERY time they visit Chapelfield.
3. Once your license has been scanned and processed you will be permitted to enter the main office area to pick up your visitor/volunteer badge.
4. If you have NEVER had your driver's licensed scanned at Chapelfield before, this will take a longer time. You will want to plan accordingly.
**As a reminder, if there is a non-guardian planning to visit Chapelfield for any reason (to eat lunch, read a book in the classroom, visit the bookfair, take your child to an appointment etc.), we ask that the guardian email the teacher and front office (gilzows@gjps.org ) to let us know prior to the visit.
Our Vestibule
The vestibule will be a place you have to wait if you are picking up a student, dropping off a book bag or lunch box.
The office is a busy place and there are times that we are dealing with student confidential issues. The vestibule will be a place to wait. It also allows us to keep our building safe. We want to keep students and staff safe including keeping confidential information safe. Thank you for understanding.
Thank you PTO for all you do for Chapelfield.

5th grade parents ONLY
Dear 5th Grade Families,
The end of the year will be here before we know it, and we will be celebrating our children's last year of elementary school. There will be several fun things to come, and we wanted to get a head start on collecting photos for two separate projects.
1. Baby Photo Guessing Game: Please submit a photo of your child as a baby. The students will walk around and try to identify as many of their classmates as possible as an infant. The student with the most correct matches will win a prize. Please send the attachment with your child's name and homeroom teacher.
2. End of the Year Slideshow: Please submit photos of your children from early childhood through Fifth Grade. These can include extracurricular activities, field trips, class parties, Walk-a-thons, etc. We would like all the kids to feel included, so if you have group photos that would be wonderful as well.
We appreciate your help in making these kids feel celebrated during this really exciting time!
Please submit the photos to chapelfield2032@gmail.com
Sincerely,
The Fifth Grade Committee
