ELEMENTARY G/T SERVICES

Lewisville ISD Gifted & Talented Services

ELEMENTARYG/T SERVICESLewisville ISD Gifted & Talented Services

Students identified as gifted/talented in the U.S. make up approximately six to ten percent of the total student population, so by its very nature, only a small portion of students will be eligible for services.

Personalized Service Plans

A personalized service plan is developed for all identified gifted/talented students in LISD.

The plan includes student goals, both academic and social/emotional, that are monitored throughout the school year.

The specific services each identified gifted/talented student receives may vary depending on placement recommendations and emerging educational, social, and emotional needs.

Universal Experiences

Routine lessons and planned experiences designed to elicit gifted behaviors are led by the campus G/T Facilitator in all K-2 general education classrooms throughout the school year. Data collected from the experiences is used to create a talent pool of students to watch through second grade. Those students showing potential need for G/T services are referred for testing.

Specialized Services

Students who qualify for G/T services remain in a general education classroom. Teachers have advanced training in the needs of gifted students and collaborate with the campus G/T Facilitator to provide enrichment and differentiation.

In addition, students receive weekly pull-out services with the campus G/T Facilitator beginning the spring semester of grade 2 and continuing through grades 3-5. These sessions are designed to help students better understand themselves as learners and thinkers while developing their potential through open-ended exploration.

Rather than accelerating specific content areas, elementary G/T curriculum builds on the following key capacities:

  • Leadership
  • Creativity
  • Problem-solving
  • Critical thinking
  • Self-awareness
  • Research
  • Communication

Classroom Teachers

All teachers who serve gifted/talented students have advanced training in the nature and needs of gifted/talented students, identification and assessment of gifted/talented students, and curriculum and instruction for gifted/talented students.

Teachers also receive a minimum of six (6) hours annually of professional development in gifted/talented education that is related to state teacher gifted/talented education standards.

Campus G/T Faciltators

In grades K-2, G/T Facilitators present classroom lessons and conduct planned learning experiences designed to elicit gifted/talented behaviors with all students.

Specially designed G/T curriculum is used with students in grade 2 beginning second semester and continues through grade 5. The campus G/T Facilitator is responsible for the curriculum delivery and the grading of student performance.

Referrals for G/T assessment are made to the campus G/T Facilitator. They are responsible for all campus level testing and record keeping for each student.
