TRACK AND FIELD COMPETES AT FINAL INDOOR MEET
Coach Koval summarizes the meet below:
We competed at our third and final indoor NEOITC Blue meet on Friday evening. What a great day for our Mustangs! As a coach I obviously get excited to win; win events, set school records, win. But when I evaluate how well a meet went, I like to look deeper and evaluate how well the young kids are doing. The improvements this week took place at all levels.
The spotlight shone brightest on senior Jack Dillen, who electrified the crowd with a record-shattering pole vault performance. Dillen soared to new heights, clearing an impressive 15 feet to break the school's indoor record. Of course, immediately following his record-breaking jump, he had to sprint over to the starting line for the 200M (22.86) where he ran down the competition to win that event as well. But he wasn’t done, as he was running the 200, he was on his first call over at High Jump with the 2:00 countdown on and still out of breath from the 200, Jack jumped at an opening 5’8” and cleared on his first attempt. Jack finished the high jump at 6’0”. Jack also had a strong showing in the 60m hurdles (8.15 seconds) moving up to second on the all-time hurdle list. Other seniors getting it done, James Swasey in the 800M battled to a 5th place finish (2:05.58). Brendan Gartland 4:58 in the 1600M. The 4x200M Relay team (Griffin, Waite, Bly, Kurtz) with a last-minute change ran a 1:33.88, currently 16th in Division 1.
From the young guys, the distance events saw remarkable improvements, with freshman Caiden Mobley turning heads in the 800m, shaving an astounding 4.60 seconds off his previous best with a time of 2:05.74. Timothy Carnes, a promising sophomore, continued his upward trajectory in the 1600m, trimming his time to 5:10.75. Newcomer Dahmiair Rogers popped off a 7.16 in the 60M dash, currently #29 in Division 1. Sophomore Jacob Gosser ran a season and career PR 53.12 in the 400M.
On the girls' side, freshman Sophia Pasko in the 1600m, dropped an impressive 10.58 seconds from her previous mark to clock in at 6:42.99. Freshman Chloe Cliché improved her 800M time to a 2:42.45 AND also anchored the 4x400M relay that finished 2nd but with a 4:14.98 (Smalheer, Smalheer, Magyar, Cliché) currently 10th in Division 1. The sprints saw junior Audrey Pietruszka showcase her dual-threat capabilities, posting personal bests in both the 60m hurdles (10.00) and 200m (29.22). Ava Spisak (8.53) and Savanna Spisak (8.66) both ran season bests.
The Smalheer sisters made their presence felt in the 400m, with Madison and Marissa both breaking through with personal records. Madison led the way with a time of 1:02.56, while Marissa followed closely at 1:03.33.
In the field events, sophomore Logan Zawie continued her development in the shot put, reaching a new personal best of 30'9.75". Meanwhile, Heidi Storm in the pole vault, cleared 7 feet and added 6 inches to her previous best.
On Saturday, Hannah Jicha competed at the SPIRE Scholastic Showcase in the 1600M where Hannah set a new school record in the event with a 5:04.07! That is ELITE!
With numerous personal records falling and Jicha & Dillen's historic performances leading the way, this weekend served as a testament to the program's growing strength and depth across all events. As the indoor season progresses, these athletes have positioned themselves as serious contenders. Next up is the NEOITC All-Star meet on Feb. 21st.
MUSTANGS STUDENTS COMPETE IN FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Freshman Daniella Puma and sophomore Jordan Sample joined with figure skaters from Avon, Berea, and St. Joseph High Schools to compete on behalf of the Westshore B Figure Skating Team at the Ohio High School School Team Figure Skating Championships. Together Westshore B earned 5th in Production Ensemble, first in Team Maneuvers, and were ultimately crowned the Ohio High School State Champions!

NEW TICKETING PRICES FOR THE GCC
The Greater Cleveland Conference (GCC) will be raising admission ticket prices for all athletic events beginning in the 2023-2024 school year. In May, GCC principals approved the increase in athletic ticket prices after GCC Athletic Directors conducted a review of ticket prices for surrounding conferences in Northeast Ohio and found most to already be at these price levels. Ticket sales revenue generated from the events is the main source of funding used by member schools to cover costs for sports and the overall athletic department budget. While costs of game officials, security, sporting equipment, along with all the other costs associated with these events have increased and ticket prices have not. The increase is intended to help offset costs without sacrificing family, student and community experiences. This is the first price increase the GCC has issued since the formation of the league in 2020. The GCC consists of member schools Brunswick, Cleveland Heights, Euclid, Medina, Mentor, Shaker Heights, and Strongsville.
