CELEBRATIONS!
Fall Choir Concert
On Monday, October 12, the CHS Choir Program presented their fall choral preview! All 3 curricular ensembles sang: Concert Choir, Bella Voce, and Chamber Choir. We were joined by student percussionist Tessa Cipriano and violinist Shreya Sundaram.
Additionally, we heard from student-run ensembles: The Septet and C# a cappella.
Congratulations to the 160 students involved! See you on December 16th for our Winter Concert!
Congratulations to the CHS Golf Team!
Congratulations to the following golfers for qualifying for the state golf championships after shooting a team score of 329 in Monday's District V Championship:
- Kabir Gandhi (9th grade) - 74
- Ben Joo (11 grade) - 78
- Makayla Robinson (11th grade) - 86
- Brady Stocksdale (11th grade) - 91
- Trevor Lloyd (11th grade) - 97
This is the first time since 2016 that we have had a team qualify for the state championship. The team finished in 7th place.
Freshman Kabir Gandhi finished in 6th place overall (both 1A/2A and 3A/4A groups). Kabir shot an incredible 2 over par 74. Makayla Robinson becomes the first female to qualify for back-to-back state tournaments since 2017. Makayla shot a career best 14 over, 86, and finished 5th overall and 1st for the 3A/4A competition. The state only recognizes the entire district's champion, but this would mean Makayla is the 3A/4A Champion!
The lowest 4 scorers will be the 4 representing CHS at the state championship October 26 & 28.
Emily Scott Memorial Walk
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for the Emily Scott Memorial Walk on Sunday, October 4th! Despite the rain, you showed up to honor and celebrate the life and legacy of CHS alumna Emily Scott ’18. Your support helps us continue Emily’s legacy by providing scholarships to graduating seniors. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who walked, donated, and helped make this special day meaningful! We look forward to continuing this tradition next year.

Save the Date for Our Fall Theatre Production
Join us for Failure: A Love Story, our 2026-2027 Main Stage Fall Play!
Here's what to expect...
By the end of 1928, all three Fail sisters will be dead – expiring in reverse order, youngest to oldest, from blunt object to the head, disappearance, and finally consumption. Tuneful songs, and a whimsical chorus follow the story of Nelly, Jenny June, and Gerty as they live out their lives above the family clock repair shop near the Chicago River, before their time unexpectedly runs out. A magical, musical fable where, in the end, the power of love is far greater than any individual‘s successes or failures. (From Concord Theatricals).
And we'd be amiss not to mention the parakeets, talking snake, the ever-watching clocks, and the wonderful gramophone who make up the world of Fail Clock Works. Come fall in love with this dark comedic fairy-tale set in 1920s Chicago.
Recommended for Middle School students and up.
Content Warning - while the script and characters are PG, the play does deal with death, loss, and grief. The play uses comedy to explore these concepts, so we encourage everyone to use their own personal discretion as to their viewing preferences.

Action Items for the Beginning of the School Year
1. Apply for Financial Aide
The HCPSS participates in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. Students from households that meet federal income guidelines are eligible to receive free or reduced-price meals.
Parents/guardians must submit a new application every school year to maintain their student’s eligibility.
2. Update Your Medication Forms
Students who require medication to be administered during the school day need to have new forms (dated on or after July 1st) completed for this fall. For your convenience, you can find these forms on-line at the HCPSS website. Medical Forms.
3. Parking Permits
Permission for students to drive and park vehicles on school system property is a privilege. Parking spaces for students at Centennial High School are limited. Accordingly, in order to be granted this privilege, applications for parking permits will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis in priority order: 1) Seniors; 2) Students enrolled in Work Study/Intern Mentor Programs; and, 3) Juniors.
Permits will be issued in this order through the end of the third week of school. Beginning September 18th, remaining permits will be issued in the order applications are received. Permits will not be reserved for students who do not yet have a valid Maryland Driver's License. Students ARE NOT required by the school system to attend a ‘Safe Driving’ presentation this school year.
To apply for your permit:
- Login to HCPSS.me.
- Complete the application packet and save as a pdf.
- Take a photo of your driver’s license.
- Follow this link to submit the online application. The information collected through the online application is required by HCPSS.

RTA Bus Passes
Thanks to a continued partnership between HCPSS, Howard County Government, and Regional Transportation Agency (RTA), all HCPSS middle and high school students have access to free RTA bus passes through summer 2027. Students have full access to the RTA system and are not limited to transportation to and from schools or to school-related activities.
If your child is interested, they can visit Student Services to request a free pass. To obtain the free student bus pass, students must agree to:
Provide name/student ID, address, and grade to school staff
Maintain possession of the pass
Not transfer or share the pass with others
Abide by Howard County Public School System rules while on-board.
Note: If the pass is lost or misplaced, only one replacement pass will be provided to the student.
Howard County government and the Regional Transportation Agency of Central Maryland also have a digital bus pass program, enabling students to access free RTA bus passes directly from their phones or smart devices using a mobile app. Students who do not have access to a smart phone may still receive a free, printed bus pass from their school office.
For more information on RTA and detailed schedule information, please call 1-800-270-9553 or visit Transit RTA.
COMMUNITY NEWS
Free Fall Festival - October 16
Howard Community College is thrilled to be hosting our fourth annual FREE Fall for All event on Friday, October 16, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. on our downtown Columbia campus. With HCPSS schools being closed, it's a great day for fun, family-friendly, fall activities.
From inflatables to crafts, to games and activities, the event has been structured with community members of all ages in mind. Food will be available for purchase from a variety of local food trucks.
We are also highlighting our dedicated public safety professionals, connecting guests with representatives from Maryland and Howard County law enforcement, fire departments, and other local agencies.
We truly mean Fall for All, so we’d love to invite everyone to join in on the fun! More information about the event is available at HowardCC.Edu/FallForAll or on our HCPSS Community Program Listing.
Naloxone Training Opportunity
In Howard County, addressing substance misuse among youth, including opioid use, remains a critical public health priority. Fatal overdoses have been steadily declining since 2022, a success largely driven by widespread naloxone distribution and acceptance. Yet, substance misuse among our youth is still an ongoing risk. According to the 2024 Maryland Youth Risk Behavior Survey, almost 10% of middle school students and 12.5% of high school students in Howard County reported taking prescription pain medication without a prescription or differently than prescribed.
As a parent, you play a vital role in protecting your children and your community. Scan the QR code on this flier or use this link [https://www.howardcountymd.gov/health/opioid-overdose-response-program] to access our free, on-demand naloxone training. In just 10-15 minutes you can gain the skills needed to respond to an opioid overdose. You can take the training alone, with your child or with the whole family. After you complete the training, you can receive a free naloxone kit.
It’s never too early to learn to save a life!
