Lutherville Lab Report
What's gone down & what's coming up at the leopards' lair.
September 5, 2025
Lutherville Families,
We've had two great weeks of learning and community-building here at school. Classrooms are buzzing and your children are impressing us each and every day. Students are in the flow of routine and rocking their learning! Today, we're happy to share that thanks to our dedicated staff, we're excited to be able to offer an array of 11 extra-curricular clubs and programs to students at Lutherville Lab! Please see that information below.
We're also beaming with pride for our remarkable student achievement, announced last week. Lutherville's students had the 5th highest performance increase in all of Baltimore County on Math and Reading MCAP last year. Not too shabby for a school already in the 83rd-percentile of all elementary schools in Maryland! Kudos to our kiddos and our hard-working teachers!
We are looking forward to two final, big school opening events in the next few days:
- Please join us Sunday afternoon for Back to School Picnic hosted by the PTA from 1:00 - 4:00 on the back fields behind the school. More information below!
- Tuesday evening is Back to School Night here at Lutherville. We will start in the gym a 5:30 and then offer two sessions to allow families with siblings more flexibility to meet with teachers. One session will be at 6:00 and the next at 6:45. This is a great opportunity to understand the key skills your child will be learning this year and how we can partner for their success. Please join us!
Curious about a late bus?
If you are wondering about a late bus, the most efficient way to get that information is to visit this website. If a bus is late, dozens of affected families may be trying to reach the school simultaneously, leading to frustration when we can only answer a few at a time. To answer your question about a bus, we would reference the same sources you have access to -- BusWhere and this website: https://www.bcps.org/parents/transportation_status. We're hoping direct access can help inform families more efficiently!
Student Safeties at Lutherville
Student safeties are coming to Lutherville! Fifth grade students can apply to be a safety. Safeties will help students off the bus or out of the car, monitor the halls to make sure all students are moving at a safe pace, and help students unpack or pack, and get to where they need to be. Applications are due to Mrs. Weisbecker by Monday, September 15th. See your teacher for your application!
In partnership,
-Mr. McComb
A 5th grade "Kindergarten Helper" makes sure these friends make it to the gym for carloop.

We are hiring for 3rd grade!
Lutherville Lab has been allocated a position to relieve our class sizes in 3rd grade. We want to cast as wide a net as possible to find a dynamic educator that will continue to enhance our outstanding teaching staff serving your children. Perhaps you know an outstanding teacher who took a leave to be home for a time with young children, who would come back to the classroom for the right opportunity? Or perhaps you know a recent college graduate back in town and looking to start their teaching career?
If you do, please have them connect with us here at school by emailing Mr. McComb at smccomb@bcps.org or calling the school office at 443-809-7800.
Student Club Offerings SY 25-26
Congrats to Mrs. Weisbecker & Calling LAX families!
Congratulations to Mrs. Weisbecker, who was selected as a USA Lacrosse Game Changer for her excellent work with students in her classroom and contributing to our school as a whole. This year, Mrs. Weisbecker trained our staff on using Talking Points to enhance our home-school communications, and is leading our Student Safety initiative to provide leadership opportunities to 5th grade students.
As an awardee, Mrs. Weisbecker will be recognized on the field at USA Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks when Team USA plays on Friday, September 26th at the Atlas Cup. Mrs. Weisbecker and other "Game Changers" will be honored at halftime of Team USA's 7:00pm game.
Below is a code for discounted tickets for the event. So, if you would like to celebrate Mrs. Weisbecker along with us and/or enjoy some high level lacrosse as nations gear up for the 2028 Summer Olympics, feel free to use the code to get discounted tickets for the event.
Dot Day: Make Your Mark!
In art classes during the week of September 15th, students will be reading the story "The Dot" and creating art inspired by the story. The central message of the story is to "make your mark" which we'll celebrate as a school on September 19th. Students are encouraged to wear dotted clothing on the 19th if they have it. On the 19th we will also hold our "Goals Parade" for students to target how they'll make their mark as learners and leopard community members this year.
Supporting our Art Classes this year is Carey Williams, Art Intern, from Loyola. Learn more about Ms. Williams below.
Reminder: Updates for the 2025-2026 School Year!
Devices
BCPS has updated device allocations. Classrooms in K-2 have a reduced allocation (no longer 1-to-1). At elementary schools devices will no longer come home with students. Students and their parents/caregivers will be financially responsible for intentional damage to or loss of any Chromebook or other devices assigned to the student.
Online Payment Option
To provide an added convenience for families and reduce the possibility of lost/misplaced money in the hands of small children, this year, Lutherville Lab is adding an online payment option for families to pay for field trips. Additional information will come to families once we're through the first few weeks. We will no longer be accepting checks, as the frequency of errors and bounced checks made that payment method inefficient. There is a small fee associated for the online payment. Families for whom that fee is not worth the convenience may choose to pay in exact cash instead (charges will be to the nearest dollar; we're not going to ask for exact amounts and collect coins).
Student Progress Monitoring
BCPS will be automating a weekly message this year providing families with attendance information through FOCUS and grades through Schoology. Grade information is also available to all families throughout the year (and for previous years!) through the Parent FOCUS Portal. In our continued efforts to reduce our environmental impact, as a National Green Ribbon School, and to be judicious in where we expend time and energy, Lutherville Lab will print 4th quarter report cards for all families (which will have grades and comments from all Marking Periods for the year, for your records), but not for Quarters 1, 2, and 3, as a default practice. To ease this transition for any families with concerns, we will provide a link for individual printing requests at the close of quarters 1-3.
Talking Points for Communication
On Thursday, families should have received a message through Talking Points reminding about Sneak-a-Peek. Talking Points is a great communication tool that some of our teachers used last year and we will be using as a school this year. It allows families to send and receive messages in their preferred language and as texts or through the app. Please accept the texts (don't block) and if you don't want texts, please add the app!

September is World Suicide Prevention Month
While we recognize and focus on suicide prevention all year round, we want to be intentional about promoting suicide prevention during the month of September which is suicide prevention and awareness month.
World Suicide Prevention Day
You can show support by wearing yellow on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, which is World Suicide Prevention Day.
We know 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year and 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24 (NAMI, 2022). Please be aware of the warning signs of a mental health challenge and ways you can respond.
Warning Signs
Here are some warning signs that may indicate a student is having a mental health challenge/crisis:
· Unexpected/dramatic decline in school performance
· Noticeable changes to mood and/or behavior (i.e., someone who is always cheerful is now quiet and somber, someone who loves a hobby is now disinterested, etc.)
· Changes in appetite, sleep, hygiene
· Frequent physical complaints
· Isolating themselves from friends
· Comments or gestures that may hint that someone is thinking of ending their life. (**If this happens, notify an administrator immediately.)
Tips for How to Respond
· Have a conversation - If you notice these signs and you have a good relationship with the student, consider talking to them one-on-one. Say something like” “I’ve noticed that you _______ (insert noticeable mood/behavior change). Is everything ok?” The student may just need to talk to someone they trust.
· Notify/Consult someone on your Behavior Threat Assessment Team (School Counselor, School Psychologist, School Social Worker, School Nurse, Administrator, SRO, PPW) and discuss your concern(s).
· Report – If a student makes a comment/gesture indicating possible thoughts to end their life, do not leave the student alone and notify an administrator immediately.
If you have further questions, please reach out to the School Counselors, School Psychologist, and/or School Social Worker at your school.
Additional resources can also be found in the Mind Over Matters Campaign website. View this resource from the Suicide Prevention Resource Center – Ideas for Action that can be done in September and year-round.

· Digital Shareables for Suicide Prevention
In the spring, we sent a letter sharing our continued practice of collectively contributing to purchasing of student school supplies. The letter outlines details and has an FAQ section. The target contribution amount is $40.00 and can be offered in cash or check (made out to "Lutherville Lab PTA") to the school office or online at the PTA Online Store (small fee applies).
This is an important practice and opportunity to live out our values as a school community and we appreciate all the support and generosity to continue this approach to collectively meet the needs of our students.
From the PTA
LL Family Picnic is THIS Sunday, 9/7/25 from 1pm-4pm behind the school. The weather is looking ideal for this new event. There will be hot dogs, yogurt, chips, fruit, veggies, and drinks provided for free by the PTA. If able, consider bringing a dessert or side to share. BYO blanket or lawn chairs. Wear comfortable shoes for the playground or a pick up game of soccer, wiffle ball or kickball. We hope to see you there!
