Fresh Air, Fresh Perspective
Message from the Executive Director
Dear West Oso ISD Family,
As we come to the close of another school year, I want to extend my sincere appreciation to each of you for your dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment to our students and community. The work you do each day makes a lasting difference, and it does not go unnoticed.
The end of the school year is not only a time for reflection on our accomplishments, but also an important opportunity to pause, rest, and restore ourselves for the journey ahead. Summer offers us a chance to reset—both mentally and physically—and I encourage each of you to take full advantage of it.
Take time to breathe in fresh air, enjoy a fresh perspective, and slow down from the pace of the school year. Spend time outdoors when you can, soak in the sunshine, and reconnect with the simple things that bring joy.
Make time for fun and relaxation—watch movies you’ve been wanting to see, spend time with family and friends, and engage in hobbies that bring you peace and happiness. Prioritize your health by getting some regular exercise, staying active in ways you enjoy, and nourishing your body with healthy seasonal foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables.
Most importantly, take care of yourself. Rest is not only deserved—it is necessary. A healthy, refreshed you allows us all to return in the fall with renewed energy, creativity, and purpose for our students.
Thank you again for everything you do for West Oso ISD. I hope your summer is safe, restorative, and filled with moments that bring you joy.
With gratitude and appreciation,
RJ Alvarado

West Oso ISD Teachers Encouraged to Embrace Healthy Eating Habits This Summer
As summer break arrives, teachers across West Oso Independent School District have a valuable opportunity to rest, recharge, and refocus on personal well-being. One of the simplest yet most impactful ways to support health during the break is through mindful eating—especially by taking advantage of the season’s abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables.
A Season Full of Fresh Options
Summer in South Texas brings an impressive variety of locally available produce. Farmers’ markets, grocery stores, and even home gardens are often overflowing with nutrient-rich options such as watermelon, peaches, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, and berries.
These foods are not only refreshing during the hot months but also packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support energy levels, immune health, and overall wellness.
Simple Ways to Eat Healthier This Summer
Health professionals often emphasize that small, consistent changes are more sustainable than strict diets. For teachers looking to improve their eating habits over the break, here are a few practical suggestions:
- Start with seasonal snacks: Replace processed snacks with sliced melons, grapes, or chilled berries.
- Build colorful meals: Aim to include at least two or three different vegetables in each meal for variety and nutrition.
- Stay hydrated naturally: Infuse water with cucumber, lemon, or strawberries for a refreshing alternative to sugary drinks.
- Try quick summer meals: Salads, grilled vegetables, and fruit-based smoothies are easy, low-prep options that fit busy summer days.
- Visit local markets: Supporting local growers while choosing fresh produce can make healthy eating more accessible and enjoyable.
The Importance of Self-Care for Educators
The teaching profession is both rewarding and demanding, and summer break serves as a crucial time for restoration. Nutrition plays a key role in energy, mood, and long-term health—making it an essential part of self-care.
By focusing on wholesome, seasonal foods, West Oso ISD educators can return to the classroom in the fall feeling more energized, focused, and ready for a new school year.
A Fresh Start Beyond the Classroom
Summer is more than a break from work—it’s an opportunity to reset habits and prioritize well-being. With an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables available, teachers are encouraged to explore new recipes, enjoy lighter meals, and make nutrition a simple but powerful part of their summer routine.
A healthy summer today can lead to a stronger, more energized school year tomorrow.
Mindfulness for Rest, Renewal, and Resilience
As summer arrives, the pace of the school year begins to fade, offering a valuable opportunity to rest, recharge, and reconnect with yourself. For educators, who spend so much of the year caring for others, summer can also be a time to gently turn that same care inward. One of the most effective ways to do this is through mindfulness.
Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment with openness and without judgment. It doesn’t require special equipment, long sessions, or prior experience—just a willingness to slow down and notice.
Why Mindfulness Matters in the Summer
After months of fast-paced schedules, deadlines, and classroom demands, the nervous system often remains in a “high alert” state even when school is out. Mindfulness helps shift the body and mind toward rest and recovery. Regular practice has been shown to support:
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Improved sleep quality
- Increased focus and clarity
- Greater emotional balance
- A deeper sense of well-being
Summer offers a natural reset point—making it an ideal season to build simple mindfulness habits that can carry into the next school year.
Simple Mindfulness Practices for Educators
1. The 3-Minute Breathing Reset
Take three minutes each day to pause. Sit comfortably, close your eyes if you’d like, and focus only on your breath. Notice the inhale… and the exhale. When your mind wanders, gently bring it back to your breathing.
2. Mindful Morning Moments
Before reaching for your phone or starting your day, take a few quiet minutes to simply observe how you feel. Notice your thoughts, your energy level, and any tension in your body without trying to change anything.
3. Walk and Notice Practice
Whether you’re walking through your neighborhood or a local park, try walking without distraction. Pay attention to the feeling of your feet on the ground, the sounds around you, and the rhythm of your movement.
4. Gratitude Reflection
Each evening, write down three small things you appreciated during the day. They can be as simple as a good cup of coffee, a kind conversation, or a moment of calm.
5. Digital Pause Time
Set aside a short period each day—15 to 30 minutes—away from screens. Use this time to rest your eyes, sit outside, read, or simply be still.
Making Mindfulness Your Own
There is no “perfect” way to practice mindfulness. Some days may feel focused and peaceful, while others may feel distracted or busy. The goal is not perfection, but presence. Even brief moments of awareness can make a meaningful difference over time.
A Summer Invitation
This summer, consider mindfulness not as another task to complete, but as a gift you give yourself. A few quiet moments each day can help restore energy, strengthen resilience, and support your well-being as you prepare for the year ahead.
West Oso ISD deeply values the dedication and heart you bring to your work every day. We hope this summer brings you rest, renewal, and many moments of peace.
Wishing you a healthy and mindful summer season.
