My Story

Hubbs Learner, PAH KYAT shared his story below:

I would like to tell you about my life. I was born in Burma and my family still lives there. I have two brothers and two sisters. When the war started in my country, I was separated from my parents and moved with my grandma to a refugee camp in Thailand. While I lived there, I went to school, but didn't graduate. I studied different subjects such as English, Burmese, and my main language, Karen. When I was nineteen years old, the United States government welcomed Thailand refugees to immigrate to the United States of America. I told my grandmother and aunt I wanted to go to the U.S. And, they said, you can go if you want, so I registered to go.

I arrived in St. Paul in August 2012. I went to an office that taught me how to use electricity safely. They also taught me how to count money and the different kinds of bills and coins. My caseworker helped me with many things. He helped me buy money orders for my rent. He told me to see a doctor for a checkup to see how good my health was. I really appreciate him.

I like the St. Paul Community. There are a lot of fun places in Minnesota, such as the Minnesota Zoo, Como Zoo, the Minnesota State Fair, The Mall of America, and the Maplewood Mall.

I also like to fish and hunt. I usually go hunting when it is small game season. I only hunt for squirrels.

Someday, I want my sisters and brothers to come here to live. When I talk to them, they say they want to live here like me because my country has a civil war and there are not enough jobs. They also told me they like snow and fall because they are beautiful.

I love St. Paul, Minnesota because there is help for our community and our education. I like my school and teacher because she helps us write. All Hubbs Center for Lifelong Learning teachers, all people in the United States and government, I appreciate you for welcoming me to your country and school. I have a good life in your country. I am married, have three children, work as a roofer, go to school four nights a week, and go to the gym three times a week. I expect a good future here. Thank you!

Pah Kyat is 29 and originally from Burma.
