What's Going on at ARVA Middle School?
From Your Middle School Counselors
We hope you and your family had some fun with our Red Ribbon Week activities and messages!
Wise parents and caregivers model the importance of constant messaging and modeling before, during and beyond events. The Red Ribbon Week messages of being drug-free and making wise and healthy choices for daily living need revisits and modeling all year.
Some great, research-based, suggestions for parents of middle schoolers:
Physical Health:
· Avoid talking negatively about exercise
· Use exercise as a reward instead of a punishment
· Focus on being healthy, not weight
Emotional Health:
· Encourage your student to solve problems – if they get stuck, ask if they’d like some suggestions
· Define problems without blaming or shaming
· Be mindful of making feelings flow from facts instead of facts flow from feelings
· Build a warm connection with your child, discuss health-related issues, and define limits
· Show interest — and discuss — your child's daily ups and downs
Drug-Free lifestyles:
· Make sure your teens know your rules and the consequences for breaking them. Most importantly, make sure they know you will enforce those consequences
· Consider any drug use or experimentation by your teen as a concern instead of a “phase”
· Clearly communicate your expectations about the use of alcohol and drugs
· Tell your teen about the negative effects that alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs will have on physical appearance
· Don't just leave your child's anti-drug education up to the school!
Helping our students choose drug-free, healthy lifestyles is a year-round task. Modeling and messaging are needed every day. These conversations are well received when we have a trusting relationship with our child. The course Connecting with Your Child by Parenting with a Purpose is a foundational for roadmap for connecting in meaningful ways. The time you invest here will lead to more rewards and less regrets!
Warmly, Mrs. Gordon and Mr. Glenn ARVA Middle School Counselors
