Program Spotlight: Vision & Voice at Joe Foss Program Spotlight: Vision & Voice at Joe Foss

zoom_out_map

In 2014, after a presentation to a life skill class at Joe Foss on coping with addiction, the guest speaker, Joan Zych, presented an idea to school counselor Janell Mills of bringing art to the Joe Foss Alternative Program as a way to encourage honest conversations about personal and/or family drug use with students. From there, the Joe Foss Project was born. Eight years later, the Joe Foss Project is thriving thanks to grants and community donations. The program has also recently expanded to include poetry, and the name has changed to Vision & Voice.

The objectives of this program are:
1) Provide a creative outlet for healing
2) Educate the community and adults about the issues teens face today
3) Provide an opportunity where students can share their stories while helping other students realize they are not alone in their struggles.

The topics now include mental illness, addiction, and other teen issues. Students, parents, staff, community member feedback, and funding indicate the need and effectiveness of this program.

Joe Foss Counselor and program founder Janell Mills recently traveled to St. Louis to attend and present at the National Alternative Education Association’s National Conference. She, along with community members Joan Zych, and Kim Bartling, shared the Vision & Voice program with alternative educators across the country.

On her experience with this recent trip, Mills shared, “I struggled with going to this conference as it was not good timing in the year, and I felt a bit guilty leaving my responsibilities where staff and students depend on me each day. However, having the opportunity to attend the conference really re-grounded me, re-affirmed that what we are doing at Joe Foss is making a difference, and rejuvenated my passion for learning and striving to be the best I can be for our students and staff. It was incredibly helpful to converse with other alternative educators about similar issues, and to hear what others do in similar situations.”

We look forward to hearing more about the success of this impactful program in the future. Thank you to Janell and all involved in helping to bring these important stories to light!

The purpose of this study was to assess whether praise-to-reprimand ratios (PRRs) affect class-wide on-task behavior, to identify if PRRs affect on-task behavior, disruptive behavior, and grades for students at risk for emotional or behavioral disorders (EBD), and to determine if there is an optimal PRR. Twenty-eight general education teachers participated in the study.

MTSS Assessment - Teaching Staff ONLY MTSS Assessment - Teaching Staff ONLY

The Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) is a framework in which data-based problem-solving and decisions making is practiced across all levels of an educational system for supporting students. The Sioux Falls School District began building the MTSS framework throughout the 2021-2022 school year and will continue for the next 2-3 years, supporting the 6 Essential Elements that must be addressed and sustained for effective implementation.

The MTSS Survey will help building teams assess the systems and structures they have (or still need) to establish an effective multi-tiered system of support (MTSS). These results will help identify current gaps and strengths for prioritization and planning the next steps in the building. This survey is not intended to demonstrate whether your school is effectively implementing MTSS; it is intended to assist your team with identifying where to focus your time and resources as you build your system.

All Stars: Lynn Reding

The CTE Academy is unlike any other high school in our District, so it's no wonder the Business Manager there is unlike any other employee in the District. Her considerable list of job duties barely scratch the surface of the daily work she gets done, and she does it all with a heart for kids, for her coworkers, and for career and technical education. Lynn Reding fills countless roles, but she's one of a kind.

Weekly Wellness Weekly Wellness

Daylight Savings Time is almost here! Moving your clock forward one hour in the spring and back one hour in the fall can throw off your body’s internal clock. The hour of sleep that’s lost or gained can leave you feeling groggy and irritable. Adjusting to the time change is different for everyone. Some adjust quickly and for others it can take some time.

6 tips to fall back this weekend:

  1. Stick to a consistent sleep schedule: Stick to your normal routine and don’t be tempted to stay up late because you have an extra hour in the day. Disruption in sleep can affect our mood, energy levels, concentration, and overall health.
  2. Avoid drinking caffeine too close to bedtime: Caffeine stimulates your nervous system and may prevent your body from relaxing naturally at night.
  3. Limit your screen time: Phone and computer screens emit high levels of blue light. This can negatively impact our sleep. Blue light affects your circadian rhythm and melatonin hormone levels, tricking your brain into thinking it is still daytime.
  4. Change your clocks the night before: Smartphones and computers update automatically, there are some clocks you’ll need to change manually. In the morning, you’ll be relieved to know all of your clocks have the correct time.
  5. Take a cat nap: If you are feeling the effects of daylight savings time, it’s okay to take a quick nap during the day. Just make sure it’s only 20-30 minutes. Longer naps can disrupt your sleep patterns and leave you feeling more tired.
  6. Create a nighttime routine: Having a routine each night can help signal your brain that it’s time to start winding down for the day. Taking a hot shower, sipping on a cup of sleepy time tea, or reading a book can help your mind and body settle down for a good night’s sleep.
