The Mustang Messenger
March 8th to March 14th Week 29
⌛ A Minute with Mr. Savage ⌛
Mustang Update
Our winter sports season came to an end on Tuesday night with a first-round loss to Moundridge at the State Class 2A tournament. The ladies and coaches had a fantastic season building a winning record against the TVL member schools and in several instances against schools with larger enrollments. I did some checking and we have been to the state tournament six out of the last seven years. That is outstanding! We had a great fan turnout at Salina and the support was outstanding! Thanks for supporting our teams, and now it is on to spring activities.
We have been very busy in the classroom over the last several weeks with staff wrapping up units as we get closer to the end of the third nine weeks and spring break! We have been reminding the students for the past several weeks to continually check their accounts to make sure they have turned in all assignments and what their grades looked like! Our goal is to end the grading period on a strong note and be ready to tackle the fourth nine weeks with renewed energy!
Mrs. Gallimore and Ms. Toerber joined our eighth-grade class members on a tour of the Highland Western Campus in Baileyville, KS. We have had some students attending the programs that are provided there for the past several years. Students can attend classes like Diesel Technology, Construction Science, Welding and a variety of other career paths and they can earn a certificate when they have completed the coursework. Juniors and Seniors can attend these programs in the morning and then return to Valley Heights in the afternoon to finish up their required courses. So why eighth graders? If a student is interested in a program it is important that we structure their class schedules, for all four years, so they have the majority of their graduation requirements completed to accommodate that kind of daily schedule.
My very first principal told me that if you don’t have it taught by the end of the third nine weeks you might not get it completed at all! That statement turned out to be very true. As we enter the fourth nine weeks the number of sports activities coupled with the end-of-year programs and banquets make for a very busy time of the year! Students are departing early for athletic activities and field trips and working hard on projects and teachers are trying to grab every available minute of class time to make sure they cover the standards effectively. I say this to encourage students to stay focused on their academics and do everything they can to turn in assignments on time. It is also important to be here at school, arrive on time, and take advantage of every minute of classroom time.
I hope everyone has an enjoyable and safe spring break and we all return charged up and ready to accomplish great things!
Go Mustangs!

🎓🎓🎓SENIOR CORNER🎓🎓🎓
Senior of the Week - Brady DeWalt
He Will Make Straight Your Paths
Brady Douglas DeWalt, was born on September 4, 2007 to Aron and Tiffany DeWalt. Brady is the brother of Keaton, Jayden, and Camden; when asked who has influenced him the most, he doesn’t hesitate, “My dad because he has taught me so many things in life.”
Brady is known for his hard work, passion, and great sense of humor - qualities that shine through in everything he does. Whether he's helping others, cracking jokes in class, or putting in the work behind the scenes, Brady makes an impact on the people around him.
Brady has been involved in FFA, KAYs, FCA, Mustang Tough, Football, and Golf for four years, along with Baseball and FACs for three years.
Outside of school, Brady can almost always be found doing what he loves most - hunting, fishing, or spending time with his friends. His ideal weekend is simple - “hanging out with my homies.”
One of Brady’s favorite Bible verses is Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths”, which he says speaks to his soul. His favorite food is Mexican, and his favorite memory at Valley Heights is going to state golf, an experience he’ll never forget.
After graduation, Brady plans to continue working as a hunting guide, a job he genuinely enjoys. Looking toward the future, his biggest goals are to have a house and a family, living a steady life built on his hard work.
His advice for younger students is, “Make a lot of friends and be outgoing like Brad.” When he leaves Valley Heights, Brady hopes to be remembered as someone who always made others laugh.
