🎄 A Season of Gratitude
As we enter the Christmas season, I want to thank our staff, students, families, and community for their continued support of Meade School District. The dedication shown across our schools each day is appreciated, and this time of year gives us an opportunity to reflect on the work we do and why it matters.
đź“‹ Topics at the Next School Board Meeting
Four-Day School Week Calendar Proposal
The Board will review a proposed calendar connected to the four-day school week discussion. This includes how instructional time is structured and how the calendar aligns with student learning and district operations.
Survey results related to the calendar proposal will be reviewed as part of this discussion.
See the calendar linked here.
đź’° School Funding Information
Later in this newsletter, you will find a short video explaining the basics of how school funding works in South Dakota. This overview helps explain how state funding decisions impact local school districts.
You will also find additional information later in the newsletter regarding the Governor’s proposed education budget. The proposal includes no increase in ongoing state aid. When operating costs continue to rise, flat funding does not maintain current services—it is a cut to education.
🎆 Wishing You a Happy New Year
As we close out the year, I wish you and your family a joyful Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year. Thank you for your continued partnership and support of the Meade School District.
Kind Regards,
Wayne Wormstadt, Superintendent
The Superintendent's Office and Business Office will be closed throughout the break. If you need immediate assistance, please email Maranda.McGillivray@k12.sd.us or Tanya.Ludwick@k12.sd.us.

The Basics of School Funding
Ever wondered how South Dakota funds its public schools?
This short 5-minute video explains how the state determines district funding needs, how local property taxes and state aid work together, and how the system is designed to promote fairness for students in large districts, small districts, and everything in between.
It describes how the formula is designed to promote fairness and consistency across the state—supporting students in large districts, small rural schools, and communities of every size—so that all students have access to educational opportunities.
Take a look! It is very informative! You will need to be logged into Facebook.
Governors Proposed Budget Offers No Increase for K-12 Education
The Governor recently released his proposed budget, which includes no increase for K–12 education—in fact, it represents a $12.8 million decrease compared to last year.
For school districts like Meade School District 46-1, inflation continues to drive up the cost of operating schools, meaning flat funding effectively results in a cut to education. Unlike many other areas of the state budget, K–12 education funding is required by law to keep pace with inflation, making this proposal particularly concerning for our district and the students we serve. Here is the statute that requires an increase in funding for education: https://sdlegislature.gov/Statutes/13-13-10.1.
Take the time to visit with your local Meade School District 46-1 school board, administrators, teachers, and of course our senators and representatives. Let your voices be heard! 📢
