MPES Word of the Month

Each month students will be focusing on a new word of the month. For the month of September our word is "Mindfulness". Mindfulness involves being fully present and aware in the moment. All classrooms were introduced to the idea by viewing a video about mindfulness and reading the book "Mind Bubbles" by Heather Krantz, MD. Throughout the month classrooms are working on different activities to promote mindfulness including mindful breathing, mindful listening, mindful coloring, and yoga. Check out our facebook page for more pictures and information about how we're implementing mindfulness in our classrooms this month!

A message from Officer Ottoway

After observing the traffic situation at the corner of Front St. and Iowa St. we are making changes to provide a safe environment for the children.

Starting Monday, all buses will pull up to the sidewalk to drop children off blocking the entrance to the parking lot. This will prevent traffic in and out of the lot and provide a safer area for the children walking into school.

If you are dropping your child off in the morning please drop them at the front of the building on Cothern St. Our upper lot will no longer be accessible for morning drop off.

ELEMENTARY TRAFFIC PLAN

This page describes the process families should follow when picking up their child(ren) from school at the end of the day by vehicle. Families who pick up their child(ren) by walking should continue to meet them as usual. Our goal in defining this after school procedure for dismissal is to ensure that everyone leaves the school grounds in a safe manner. Please walk to the rectangle at the bottom of the steps to meet your child. We appreciate your attention to this matter.

PUNCTUALITY

Because habits instilled in children at a young age can become life-long, the elementary school policy regarding "tardiness" shall discourage the problem from becoming habitual. Students are encouraged to be on time for the beginning of morning and afternoon sessions in order that teachers can begin activities in good fashion. Students who are tardy should report to the office to “check in” and each instance shall be recorded. A “tardy” is defined as arriving to the building AFTER the 8:00am bell or not arriving to class prepared to begin by 8:00am or within 5 minutes of lunch/recess ending.

Students with excessive tardies (4) during a semester may result in "make-up" time as assigned by the teacher and a courtesy letter home informing the student's parents of the growing problem. An accumulation of two or more tardies for the school year will result in the loss of a perfect attendance record.
