Build Math Minds
"Less Expectation, More Appreciation" - Episode 125
As a teacher, it is easy to have a plan in your head and see that plan change when you put it in front of students. A recent episode of "Build Math Minds" focused on the idea of having less expectations and more appreciation. As we enter the last week before break, it's easy to think about all you want to accomplish and celebrate - and then realize that none of it may go as planned.
In the math classroom, it's easy to focus on what your kids SHOULD have learned last year, what they SHOULD be able to handle during independent or partner work time, and how they SHOULD perform after you bust your tail teaching. Christina, who leads the podcast and the Build Math Minds community, encourages listeners to "appreciate what you have in the moment and what your students are capable of. Focus on what they do have and not on what they don't have and don't know to do." When it comes to teaching math, assume nothing and respond to everything.
Shoutouts from Math Walkthroughs
La'Porchia's students used any division strategy to solve a problem at the end of her lesson. Students came to the board to show their thinking while making connections between strategies!
Hannah has done an amazing job adapting the kindergarten slides and standards to the level of her students. Her group did a great job learning about taller and shorter comparisons this week!
Stacy has been focused on student ownership of vocabulary terms this week. Her students pretended to be gingerbread men as they made the connection between numerals and ordinal numbers.
Check Your Classroom - Math Closet Items
Over the last two years, we have invested many thousands of dollars in math manipulatives. We are fortunate to be in a place where if you ask "Do we have...?" I can typically say "Yes! I can bring it to your classroom." Now is a great time to check your classroom for any materials that you have borrowed from the Math Closet that you are no longer actively using. These items were purchased with Title I funds, so they must be inventoried periodically. Please take a few minutes and return all borrowed materials from previous units. You can check them out again next year. I promise!
LOGISTICS: Materials can be dropped off near my desk in B-133. I will be completing an inventory and reorganizing the Math Closet so it is refreshed and ready to go for second semester.
Quarter 3 Pacing Guides
Our in house pacing for second, third, and fourth grades have been created. These pacing guides are as realistic as possible based on where your team is. They are linked below under the "Ebinport Pacing Guides" button. If your grade level would like help creating a pacing guide, let me know!
