KMS NEWSLETTER

Dear KMS Families,
We need your help addressing an ongoing issue in the 7th-grade boys’ restroom. Recently, we’ve had repeated problems with vandalism, items being stuffed into toilets, and spitting on mirrors. These behaviors create sanitation and safety concerns, take valuable time from our already busy custodian, and can result in costly repairs the district cannot afford.
Please take a few minutes to talk with your student about showing respect and responsibility by following the KMS Guidelines for Success (Respect, Integrity, Citizenship, and Kindness) in all areas of our school. Students who misuse or damage the restroom may be assigned Reflection time, asked to help clean and restore the space, and, if the behavior continues, the restroom may be closed temporarily for everyone’s use. We appreciate your partnership in helping all students take pride in their school and make choices that reflect our shared values.
As a reminder, this week we will follow a modified bell schedule to accommodate adjusted instructional time before staff inservice days on October 16–17. The modified schedule is attached to this message for your reference.
Looking ahead, Parent/Teacher Conferences will take place the following week on October 22 and 23 from 4:30–7:30 PM. Teachers will be scheduling grade-level conferences with some families, but all others are welcome to attend during open times to meet with teachers, visit the Book Fair, and stop by the Tech Help table if you have questions or issues with PowerSchool/Schoology.
Thank you for your continued support in keeping KMS a clean, respectful, and successful place for all students.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES: OCT 22 & 23
This year, scheduled conferences will be arranged by each grade-level team to discuss student progress and address any concerns. Teachers will be reaching out directly to families who would benefit from a scheduled conference time.
All other families are welcome to stop by during open conference hours to check in, ask questions, or address any concerns you may have. We encourage everyone to take advantage of the Book Fair and the Tech Help table, where assistance will be available for PowerSchool, Schoology, and other online tools.
We look forward to seeing you and working together to support every student’s success!
7th Grade Parents:
You have the opportunity to have your student's hearing screening results reviewed by a hearing professional at no cost to you. Please enroll using the following QR code.
GRIZZLY TICKET WINNERS
During the course of the school day, teachers and staff like to recognize students who are caught exhibiting the KMS core values of Respect, Integrity, Citizenship, and Kindness. We do this by giving out Grizzly Tickets. Every Grizzly Ticket goes into a bucket and from that bucket, we draw two students to celebrate per grade.
MS. LHOTKA'S FLEX CLASS
Ms. Lhotka's 6th Grade Flex Class shows off their acting skills
while demonstrating the KMS Guidelines to Success focus this quarter: RESPECT.
At KMS, RESPECT means treating people, property, and yourself with care and consideration.
We show respect when we:
Speak and act with kindness and courtesy.
Listen when others are speaking.
Follow directions and school expectations.
Take care of our school building and shared spaces.
Value differences and include others.
Respect helps everyone feel safe, valued, and ready to learn, because when we respect ourselves, we naturally respect our school community, too.
KODIAK PUBLIC LIBRARY HAS A NEW SHELFIE STAR - KMS 6TH GRADER - OSITA WHEELER-MCCAIN!
Stepping up as our next Shelfie Star is Osita!
She loves so many different things about the library, and her showcase definitely puts it all on display! From the events we host, to the books, STEAM kits, and movies—she’s a fan of it all.
Osita also appreciates how calm and quiet the library can be, making it a perfect place to work on projects. While she loves reading, she also shares that she’s passionate about animals and enjoys (almost) any sport!
Swing by to check out her selections. Thanks for sharing your love for the library, Osita!
Great showcase! KMS is super-proud of you!! 👏
Thank you Kim Wynn and Jay, Betsy Lund, Megan Kouremetis, Ceilidh Prater, Rachel Hinman, Katrina Filipowicz, Pam Gray, and Stefanie Kondro for spending some of your Friday evening proofing, correcting, counting, and mystery solving all student cookie dough orders! You all got a good look at the effort it takes to pull off this fundraiser.
Thank you to the parents and community members that responded to our calls and texts to make sure we got the cookie dough counts correct for your student seller. We appreciate all of you! Most of all, we are so proud of our engaged students that put their best foot forward in going out to the community for a good cause.
We hope to announce our totals on Monday (HINT: WOW! The kids kicked butt this year!)
We love having volunteers in our building! Even if you aren’t able to help with specific events, there are always flexible opportunities that can fit your time and schedule. If any of the options below interest you, please reach out for more information!
