Weekly STAR Family Updates
Good afternoon STAR Parents. This is Mrs. Traumuller, the proud Morehead Principal, with the weekly updates and reminders for the week ahead.
In case you missed it! Morehead made the news two times in August! What a way to begin a new school year with celebrations of staff and students! Check it out!

Ms. Morgan in the Spotlight for Being a First Year Teacher
All of our announcements will be place under the "School News" section of our Website (towards the bottom), on Class Dojo, Facebook, Twitter, and the GCS Parent App.)
- HUGE SHOUT OUT TO ALL OF OUR Morehead Students! We had our first fire drill of the school year and all of our students did fantastic. Please thank them for doing so well with following directions and truly practicing something that we hope we never have to use!
- All of our second grade students will be going to the Greensboro Aquatic Center for the Learn to Swim Program. If you did not send the permission slip, completely signed and filled out, the student will be sent to another classroom while their class is gone. Please contact teacher ASAP if you have not completed a form, and note that we have extras in the front office if needed.
Here are some reminders for the ease and flow of school routine.
- What time does school start and stop? School doors will open at 7:20 am for all students. We will welcome students in our building at the designated points of entry, until 7:45 am, in which the tardy bell rings. (the first day of school we will go a bit longer and there will be no late passes assigned during the first day). School will begin dismissal at 2:30 pm and go until 2:50 pm. At this time, if your child is still at school, they will be in the front office waiting for you. Please know that we do not have staff members assigned to after school care unless your child is registered for ACES afterschool, so please aim for no later than 2:50pm.
- What do I do When My Student is Late, Absent, or dismissed early? We have added a digital form to record and time away from school between 7:45 am and 2:30 pm. It is available on Class Dojo for the ease of getting access. Please use this link every time your student is late, absent, or leaving early. 25-26 School Late, Early Dismissal, or Absence Link This must be filled out within 7 days of the time away from school in order to have the absence considered "excused". Please remember, 10 days of absences creates a flag on the student as "chronically absent".
- Where can my child come into the school? There are going to be two points of access to the school for arrival. ALL STUDENTS, even if they are walkers, must go through the two areas of entry in order to be scanned in with their cards and to get a breakfast if needed. All bus riders will enter through the double glass doors in the front of the building. This is also where any "front walkers" can enter the building. Car riders will use the car line, exit their vehicle and walk through the second point of entry by the kindergarten classrooms. If your child walks from behind the school, please have them use this same entrance to access our campus. These same areas are where our students will exit.
- What are the Food Options for STAR Students? All students will be offered a free breakfast upon getting to school. These options are very easy to eat and not messy items for the classroom. PLEASE AVOID sending outside food in to school with your child. All students who can should eat breakfast at home. Students will be offered three lunch choices daily and have to choose upon arrival as part of their morning routine. These meals are free to every student. Do you want to add money and learn more about the food served? Please look at the following link to add money to the lunch account for snacks and ice cream treats. Link Here.
- Can I visit the school during the school day? Of course you can visit your STAR during the day, but we ask not the first day as we are working on routines. Please know that the leadership team has asked that we have 24 hours in advance notice for all visits to the classroom as well as lunch dates. This is not to keep you out, but to help us plan for our day. Morehead has several days where the students cannot use the cafeteria and will eat in the classrooms. These are typically when we have a performance or assembly for our students to enjoy. The cafeteria is used as our stage, so we cannot have visitors on those days. We also ask that if you come to eat lunch with your student during the day, that you do not bring outside food into our cafeteria. This would be items like Chic-Fil-A, McDonalds, etc. Many of our students have allergies to foods and we need to remain mindful of all student needs.
- Early Dismissals: Early dismissals should only be done in the need of an appointment or an emergency. We will not allow for any dismissals after 2:15pm. After this time, our staff is preparing for dismissal and cannot release your STAR student. You will be asked to use the car line or wait until dismissal is over at 2:50pm. This year, any time spent outside of school is accumulated to build days absent. Please make sure that we are only using early dismissal as a way to get to an appointment or for emergencies as they arise.
- ALL VISITS TO THE SCHOOL MUST GO THROUGH THE OFFICE DOOR. For numerous safety measures, we need all visitors to come through the front office. Please do not go directly to the classroom. This is a non-negotiable, district wide policy. Also, please have your drivers license or ID with you as it will be scanned upon dismissal.
Looking ahead!
- Please note that Monday, September 1st is Labor Day, and all GCS Schools are closed during this time.
- All 2nd grade families need to sign permission slips for the Learn to Swim program! They will be enjoying this learning experience starting on 9/2 through 9/5.
- Boy Scouts Interest meeting at 6:00pm in Cafeteria on 9/9
- All Arts Academy Registrations must be submitted by 3:00pm on 9/10. No exceptions made as the teachers start creating groups that day. Reminders will be sent.
