Good Evening WHS Community,

As we complete our second full week of school, we are excited to see our students settling into routines, building connections, and gaining a clearer understanding of our expectations. Attendance is an important part of this foundation. When students are present and engaged each day, they strengthen their sense of belonging, have consistent opportunities to grow, and are better positioned to excel.

Our theme, We Belong. We Grow. We Excel., begins with being present—present in our classrooms, present in our community, and present for the learning opportunities each day brings.

Please use our updated and streamlined online attendance form to report student absences and review the following important information from our Student Handbook:

Students may be absent up to four times per quarter without documentation. After four absences, documentation is required to prevent an attendance reduction. If a student receives an attendance reduction, their grade will be lowered by 10 points, with the lowest grade being 59%. If a student was already failing the course, they will receive whatever grade was earned.

Absences with documentation include:

Absence validated by a doctor’s note submitted to the student’s dean/attendance secretary
Post-secondary visits (college and/or military visits, union interviews, etc.)
Legal obligations with documentation provided to the student’s dean
Religious holidays with a parent/guardian note provided to the student’s dean
Bereavement with a parent/guardian note provided to the student’s dean

Thank you for partnering with us to make consistent attendance a priority. When students are here, they belong. When they are engaged, they grow. And when they have consistent opportunities to learn, they are empowered to excel.

A great way to learn more about your child’s day, expectations and being part of our community is through Open House.

  • We encourage our families to join us at Open House on Wednesday, September 30th at 6PM.

  • We welcome all families to join us in the Auditorium for a meet and greet at 5:30 with our Administration Team.

  • You should ask your child/children for a copy of their schedule to follow on that day. You will go directly to Period 1, not Homeroom, it will be Day A. You can also print the schedule from your Parent Portal in Aspen X2. If you forget your child/children’s schedule, both offices will have someone in the office that can print them for you.

  • Here is a presentation of our 26/27 clubs, many will be set up in the front connector during Open House. Check them out!

Late Buses

Our late buses will be started on Monday, September 14th. There will be 2 buses for the high school. All students staying after school must be with an adult. All students riding the late bus must present their bus pass and late bus pass provided by the teacher, club advisor or detention to the bus driver.

Cell Phone Update

Please join us Wednesday, September 23, at 6:30 PM.We will be hosting a virtual parent information session about The Commons App. The founders from the company will provide us with information about their technology, the purpose, different features and the privacy of the application. This is a great opportunity to learn more about their product. Here is the Zoom link.

Prior to the session, we ask that you complete this short anonymous survey about cellphone usage in schools. Your feedback is important to us. Family Cellphone Survey

Check out The Commons FAQ – WHS for answers to frequently asked questions. The meeting will focus on informing, listening and gathering feedback that best supports our students and school community.

Our Current Cell Phone Expectations

At this time, we will remain with our current cell phone expectations while we continue to explore other solutions. Cell phones are expected to be stored in the designated classroom phone holders during the school day, including when students leave the classroom during class time. Students should not take their phones with them when going to the bathroom.

Personal electronic devices, including laptops, iPads, recording devices, smart devices, and similar technology, are not permitted for personal use during the school day. Students should use their school-issued Chromebook for academic purposes.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for helping us create a school environment where students can be present, connected, and ready to learn.

Crash Prevention Demonstration – September 30

On Wednesday, September 30, juniors will participate in a Crash Prevention Demonstration presented by The In Control Family Foundation and the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office.

This valuable, hands-on experience will highlight safe driving practices, including seat belt use, safe speeds, staying focused, and the dangers of impaired or drowsy driving. More than 10,000 Massachusetts students have participated in the program since 2015. Members of last year’s junior class participated and found the program very beneficial.

Families who do not want their student to participate should email Associate Principal Malissa Northup at malissa.northup@weymouthps.org by Tuesday, September 29.

Get Involved: Parent Council & School Council

  • Parent Council meets the 3rd Wednesday of every other month at 7 PM, alternating between in-person (WHS Library) and virtual meetings.
Our first meeting is in-person on October 21st.

  • The School Council is a state-mandated body made up of staff, parents, and community members. It meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 2:30 PM, with the first meeting on October 14th.

  • If you’re interested in joining either council, please reach out to me or Malissa Northup. Your participation makes a meaningful difference!

Electronic Handbook Acknowledgement Forms

  • As part of our return to school procedures, parents and guardians are to receive a digital copy of the Student Handbook (see the link below) & sign and return the Acknowledgement Page back to your child(ren)'s teacher.

  • We also have instructions to complete the process electronically.

  • During Open House, we will have paper copies of the Acknowledgement Form available. In addition to the different policies of the district, this form has special releases to showcase your child's work through our media sources.

  • Please review the handbook and digitally sign in Aspen or print this form and send it back to the Maroon or Gold office as soon as possible.

September is Suicide Prevention Month. Unfortunately, suicide can touch anyone, anywhere, at any time. But it is not inevitable. There is help. Weymouth High School focuses not only on academic achievement but also on students' social and emotional well-being. We want to ensure that you have the resources you need to help support us in this endeavor. Help us to raise awareness of 988, the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline which anyone who needs help for themselves or for a loved one can call or text anonymously. Please consider reading the information from the Suicide Prevention and Resource Center for families and caregivers.

Have a great week!
