November at OHS: "A Month of Gratitude"
As the leaves change and the season of thankfulness begins, Owensboro High School is turning our focus toward one of the most powerful tools for happiness and connection, gratitude. This November, we invite our entire Red Devil family to join us in celebrating “A Month of Gratitude.”
Throughout the month, OHS will spotlight small daily actions of appreciation through our November Gratitude Calendar, encouraging our Red Devils to pause, reflect, and express thanks for the people, opportunities, and moments that make life meaningful. From writing a simple thank-you note to noticing a quiet act of kindness, these small gestures build a stronger sense of belonging and connection across our school family.
Research shows that gratitude isn’t just good manners. It’s good for your mind and body! Studies from the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley and Harvard Medical School have found that practicing gratitude:
- Improves mood and reduces symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression.
- Strengthens relationships by fostering empathy and appreciation.
- Enhances sleep quality and overall well-being.
- Boosts focus, optimism, and resilience, especially during challenging times.
Gratitude rewires the brain to notice the good, even on tough days, and helps us grow through experience with a stronger, more positive outlook.
This month, OHS students will create a Gratitude Journal as part of their Advisory experience, taking a few minutes each day to reflect on what they’re thankful for. We’ll encourage everyone to practice gratitude daily, to say thank you more often, to recognize the good in others, and to appreciate the ordinary moments that make life at OHS extraordinary.
Let’s make this November one that reminds us what it truly means to be a Red Devil rooted in kindness, united by service, and grateful for one another. Join us in using the November Gratitude Calendar. Together, let’s fill our halls, homes, and hearts with gratitude!
OHS to Host Veterans Day Breakfast - Honoring Those Who Served
Owensboro High School is proud to honor the men and women who have bravely served our country with a Veterans Day Breakfast on Monday, November 10 at 10:00 a.m. in the OHS Media Center. This annual tradition allows our school community to pause and show appreciation for the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of our nation’s heroes.
The morning will feature a special program led by our OHS Army JROTC, including a tribute ceremony and presentation of colors. We are honored to welcome a special guest speaker who will share reflections on service, patriotism, and what it means to lead with purpose and heart.
Breakfast will be prepared and served by our talented OHS Culinary students, showcasing both their skills and their gratitude for those who have worn the uniform of our armed forces. Veterans and their guests are invited to enjoy this meal as a small token of appreciation from Owensboro High School.
We encourage all OHS students and staff to invite family members and friends who have served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, or Space Force to join us.
To help us plan, please RSVP by Wednesday, November 5 using the QR code or link below.
This celebration is one of many ways OHS continues to “Lead with Purpose. Serve with Heart. Grow Through Experience.” As we gather on November 10, we look forward to honoring the veterans who embody these very ideals.
We thank all who have served and all who continue to serve for their unwavering dedication to protecting our freedom.
OHS Parent-Teacher Conferences - Thursday, November 6
We invite all OHS families to join us for Parent-Teacher Conferences on Thursday, November 6, from 4:00–7:00 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with your student’s teachers, school counselors, and administrators.
Families should park in the North Gym/Student Parking Lot and enter through the Car Rider Entrance. Once inside, you’ll have the opportunity to drop in your student’s classrooms at your convenience during the scheduled time. No appointments are necessary.
In addition to conferences, we have several special events planned throughout the evening that you won’t want to miss!
🎓 FAFSA Workshop for Seniors & Parents
Join Mr. S, OHS College Coach, in the Media Center from 4:00 to 6:00pm for help completing your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Bring your most recent tax information and any college-related questions!
🛍️ Shop the Red & Black Shack
Start your holiday shopping early and grab your favorite OHS spirit gear and gifts for friends and family. Support our students and show your Red Devil spirit! The Red and Black Shack is cashless.
💬 Conversations with the Counselors: “What Teen Anxiety Looks Like and How to Help”
Join our OHS Counseling Team in Room 131 at 6:00pm for an open, informative discussion focused on recognizing the signs of teen anxiety and learning practical strategies to support your child’s emotional well-being. This session will offer insights, resources, and encouragement for families navigating the challenges of adolescence.
❤️ OHS Youth Service Center Open for Assistance
Our Youth Service Center (YSC) will also be open throughout the evening to answer questions and provide assistance with community resources, family supports, and student needs. Stop by to learn more about how the YSC serves OHS students and families year-round.
We look forward to seeing our families come together for a night filled with connection, learning, and support. When families and schools partner, students thrive!
Community Update: Local Food Assistance Resources
We understand that the suspension of SNAP benefits may create challenges for some of our OHS families, and we want to ensure everyone has access to support and resources during this transition.
The Owensboro High School Youth Service Center (YSC) is here to help. Our YSC team can assist families with connecting to local food resources, completing applications for assistance, and accessing immediate needs such as food, hygiene items, or clothing. If your family could benefit from extra support, please reach out. We’re here to serve with heart!
In addition, families can explore an interactive community map that highlights hot meal locations, food pantries, and local blessing boxes throughout Owensboro-Daviess County. This easy-to-use tool helps you find nearby resources to ensure your family’s table stays full.

Help Us Feed Local Families
Approximately 55 percent of Owensboro Public Schools students will be directly impacted by the suspension of SNAP benefits beginning November 1. Our students need your help!
Owensboro Public Schools will be holding a food drive that will directly benefit our students. If you are interested in contributing, you can do so at any of the sites listed below or at Owensboro High School. The OHS National Honor Society will be coordinating all donations at OHS.
There is a list of most-needed food items, but we will also accept gift cards to local grocery stores. All items and gift cards will be collected by OPS Staff and distributed to families in need through our Family Resource Coordinators.
We greatly appreciate our community partners for their willingness to serve as donation drop-off sites and assisting our students during this uncertain time.
