Dear Eagles,

First and foremost, HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!! Last week was filled with acts of gratitude, joyous occasions, and memorable moments. I hope everyone enjoyed the teacher appreciation gestures and our senior Decision Day celebration. These moments prompt smiles, inspire hope, and fill our hearts with joy… we can all use a little extra joy as we move further into the final stretch of this school year.

CPS is scheduled to release budgets by the end of this week. Thus far, all budget forecasts have noted that schools should anticipate some cuts in funding. As I’ve shared before, we are approaching this with thoughtfulness and care, knowing how important stability is for our staff, students, and school community. Our top priority continues to be supporting instruction and ensuring that learning remains uninterrupted.

On a brighter note, 5 Essentials data was released this past weekend. Our preliminary data shows that our overall response rate is notably higher than the level of engagement during SY24; students (52.3%) and staff (50.4%). See the rates below.

The three Essentials assessed by teacher/staff survey questions—Effective Leaders, Collaborative Teachers, and Involved Families—were fully administered and our data shows growth in those areas thanks to the collective efforts of our teachers/staff.

For 2025, CPS schools will not receive an overall rating due to a UChicago programming error leading to missing Measure data in two Essentials: Ambitious Instruction (all schools) and Supportive Environment (elementary, middle and primary schools). The same programming error is underlies why CPS students did not receive the questions for six Measures on 2025 spring surveys (see below).

Though this is unfortunate news, we will not be discouraged. We are committed to using the available data to support our students and shape our school culture and climate despite this issue. I will share additional data in the coming weeks. Our admin team looks forward to interpreting the SY25 5Essentials data with various stakeholder groups and developing action steps that will contribute to the continual improvement of our school.

Onward and upward,

Principal Banks

Return Missing School Devices

For your awareness, to help recover CPS-issued devices marked as "missing" in the last inventory audit of January 2025, ITS will send a brief survey to families and staff who were assigned those missing devices. Families and staff will be asked to return these devices to their school if they still have them. If no response is received, the device may be frozen and become unusable after June 2nd. Thank you for supporting the recovery of district assets. For questions, send an email to distributingdevices@cps.edu.

Tech Alert!!!

Experts are warning educators and parents alike about a dangerous TikTok trend that can cause an electrical fire in Chromebooks and other devices with a USB drive port. The social media trend influences students to short circuit devices by inserting paper clips, pushpins, gum wrappers, etc. into the devices’ USB drive port. This practice can not only permanently damage the device, but a single spark could lead to a fire.

We encourage you to discuss the dangers and consequences of this practice with your students, and inform your colleagues and parent/guardian community about this trend.

AP Testing

AP Test season is here! Over the next two weeks, our students will take their AP exams. We know they have been working hard all year for this moment. Make sure our students get a good night sleep for their exam, and wish them luck! The AP test schedule is shown below. Each student/family will receive an email with final reminders and test location 24-48 hours before their exam (this information should just be reminders of what their teachers are already telling them in class).

To protect our testing environment we are shutting down the use of Quiet Zones.

Building Hours

Parents,

This is a friendly reminder that our building hours are from 7:00 am until 5:30 pm. We are noticing that students are wandering the buidling after school hours because they are not in programs. This sometimes leads them into unsupervised areas which is a safety concern. Students should not be in the building after 5:30 pm (with the exception of clubs and sports).
