As Superintendent, I’m proud to share the meaningful progress we continue to make across the Steamboat Springs School District. This fall, we’re focused on strengthening the foundation that supports both our students and staff: investing in teacher and staff retention, providing long-term housing solutions, expanding mental health programming, deepening community partnerships, and making sure every student has an opportunity to grow and learn. Together, we’re investing in the people and programs that make SSSD a great place to learn, work, and grow.

Here are a few highlights from across the district showcasing this work.

Supporting Every Learner Supporting Every Learner

The Steamboat Springs School District continues to strengthen special education services to ensure every student receives the individualized support they need to thrive. Over the past three years, SSSD has made significant improvements that are producing measurable results for students and staff alike.

Key enhancements include:

  • Local leadership and autonomy: Transition to an Administrative Unit (AU), giving the district direct control over professional development, staffing, and service delivery.

  • Comprehensive staff training: Annual Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification for designated staff—exceeding national standards—and targeted, year-round professional learning for paraprofessionals on safety, IEP implementation, and de-escalation.

  • Expanded professional development: Access to Autism Curriculum Encyclopedia (ACE) curriculum training, video modules, and individualized coaching from district leaders.

  • Competitive compensation: A 21% increase in starting wages for paraprofessionals since 2022–2023, from $21.61 to $26.11 per hour.

These investments are paying off. Students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) in SSSD are demonstrating faster academic growth than statewide trends.

  • In Math, SSSD’s median growth percentile (MGP) rose from 40 to 47, compared to the state’s increase from 35 to 37.

  • In English Language Arts, SSSD’s MGP grew from 43 to 54, outpacing the state’s increase from 38 to 40.

This accelerated growth helped SSSD earn the state’s highest rating—“Accredited with Distinction.” The district remains committed to continuous improvement and ensuring all students are supported, included, and positioned for success.

Attracting and Retaining Exceptional Educators Attracting and Retaining Exceptional Educators

The Steamboat Springs School District is proud to be a place where talented educators and staff choose to stay and grow. Over the past three years, our classroom teacher turnover rate has steadily declined.

  • 2022-2023: 21.7% teacher turnover

  • 2023–2024: 20.3% teacher turnover

  • 2024–2025: 12.56% teacher turnover

According to the Colorado Department of Education, Colorado’s average teacher turnover rate during the 2024–2025 school year was 16.98%. This means Steamboat Springs is retaining teachers at a higher rate than the state average. The steady decline reflects our commitment to putting teachers and staff first through competitive compensation, supportive working conditions, and long-term investment in people.

Over the past two years, SSSD has made significant investments to raise pay for all employees. In 2024–2025, the district approved a $3 million compensation package, increasing teacher salaries by 9–15% and classified staff wages by 9–18%, with a new base pay of $53,500 for teachers and $24/hour for classified staff. For 2025–2026, the district is continuing this momentum, providing average raises of 5% for certified staff and 8% for classified staff.

Through thoughtful planning, collaboration, and investment, SSSD has become a district that attracts and retains top educators—outpacing state averages and creating a stable, thriving environment for students and staff alike.

Committed to Housing Solutions for Our Staff Committed to Housing Solutions for Our Staff

For the past three years, the Steamboat Springs School District has been steadily moving forward on long-term housing solutions to support the people who make our schools thrive. From early planning and financial modeling to securing partnerships and exploring funding options, the district has remained deeply committed to creating affordable housing for teachers and staff.

At its October 6 meeting, the Board of Education reaffirmed that commitment by continuing work on both the Whistler Park property sale and the 22-unit staff housing project near Sleeping Giant School. Together, these efforts represent an investment in the district’s future and help to ensure that educators and staff can continue to live, work, and build their lives in Steamboat Springs.

This project has been years in the making, and the district is determined to see it through. Providing stable, affordable housing isn’t just about supporting employees; it’s about strengthening our schools and community for generations to come.

Our community partners also play an important role in helping students plan for their futures. During the October Steamboat Springs High School Futures Fair, students connected directly with local businesses, organizations, and professionals to explore a wide range of career opportunities available right here in the Yampa Valley.

Prioritizing Mental Health and Wellness Prioritizing Mental Health and Wellness

The Steamboat Springs School District is committed to supporting the mental health and well-being of students, staff, and families through a Comprehensive Mental Health Framework that integrates prevention, early intervention, and responsive care into the daily life of our schools.

Our comprehensive approach includes:

  • Tier 1: Universal supports for all students through social-emotional learning and wellness initiatives embedded in daily instruction.

  • Tier 2: Targeted supports that offer short-term, skill-based interventions for students needing additional help—currently serving 63 students across the district.

  • Tier 3: Intensive supports that provide individualized and family-based therapy through school-based clinicians and community partnerships—currently serving 56 students in active care.

Strong partnerships make this possible. Working with Reaching Everyone Preventing Suicide (REPS), Northwest Colorado Health, and 14 private mental health providers, SSSD ensures families have timely access to quality care, from free initial visits to ongoing therapy and specialized services.

The impact of this work is best reflected in the words of our families:

“We were so wrapped up in support and love during one of the most difficult times in our lives… These services were a lifeline and lifesaver for our entire family.”

“The school-based therapy has been a lifeline our family desperately needed… Without this program, we would not have been able to find or afford consistent therapy.”

“Thank you for providing this incredible service. It is saving and changing lives.”

Through these collective efforts, SSSD and our partners continue to foster a culture of wellness, compassion, and connection, ensuring that every student and family has the support they need to learn, grow, and thrive.

Strengthening Students: YVHS Invests in Physical Health to Support Mental Health Strengthening Students: YVHS Invests in Physical Health to Support Mental Health

This year at Yampa Valley High School (YVHS), students have the opportunity to focus on their physical health and strengthen their mental health, thanks to a $35,500 federal grant from Empowering Action for School Improvement (EASI).

During a brainstorming session, staff decided to use the grant to promote physical health with the goal of improving mental health. Since YVHS does not have access to a physical education teacher or gym, they chose to allocate the funds toward giving students the knowledge and equipment to take charge of their physical well-being.

YVHS now has four pieces of gym equipment, including a treadmill, a recumbent bike, a functional trainer, and volleyball and pickleball sets. Students can use this equipment before or after school, or during class. In addition, students and staff received one-year memberships to Old Town Hot Springs (OTHS), where they can go as a class or on their own. Students also have access to group classes, including swim lessons, and OTHS trainers will help students with their individual fitness goals.

Acquiring all this equipment took a community effort. Students visited Ski Haus to pick out gym sneakers, and a manager at the Under Armour outlet in Silverthorne even went into the store on her day off with her daughter to shop for clothes and gear for the students.

The health class meets twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m. The first semester focuses on an introduction to physical health, while the second semester will emphasize nutrition and independent exercise. To help students set and maintain realistic goals, local wellness coach Sarah Coleman is supporting them in aligning fitness goals with their overall well-being.

“We are giving them a healthy outlet to utilize outside of the school instead of scrolling on their phones,” said Principal Kristyl Boies.

By connecting classroom learning to real-world experiences, YVHS is empowering students to make lifelong healthy choices.

YVHS extends its gratitude to Under Armour Outlet in Silverthorne, Old Town Hot Springs, and Ski Haus for their partnership and generosity in supporting this initiative. Their contributions have helped ensure every student has the tools, gear, and community connections needed to build lifelong healthy habits.

Understanding Colorado’s Healthy School Meals for All Program Understanding Colorado’s Healthy School Meals for All Program

Since 2022, Colorado’s Healthy School Meals for All (HSMA) program has allowed all Colorado public school students to receive free school meals, regardless of income. This program has provided support to families and students in the Steamboat Springs School District, resulting in a 50% increase in daily lunch program participation. During the 2024-25 school year, 186,981 free lunches were provided to students who would not otherwise qualify for Free or Reduced meals, saving local families approximately $750,000 last year.

In November, two certified questions will appear on Colorado’s statewide ballot. These questions—originating from House Bill 25-1274 and amended by Senate Bill 25B-003—will determine whether the state can continue funding this program.

If these measures do not pass, Steamboat Springs School District students will no longer receive free meals through the Healthy School Meals for All program. We encourage families to stay informed and review the official ballot language as you prepare to vote this fall, available at https://leg.colorado.gov/BallotAnalysis

This information is provided for educational purposes only and does not advocate for or against any ballot measure.

Apoyando a Cada Alumno Apoyando a Cada Alumno

Atrayendo y Reteniendo Educadores Excepcionales Atrayendo y Reteniendo Educadores Excepcionales
