Welcome Back, SAU 50 Family Letter
August 18th, 2026

WELCOME BACK, EVERYONE!
Each month, Iβll try and kick off our SAU 50 Community Newsletter with a quick, 5-second poll so we can stay connected.
Help us get to know you! Which community do you represent?
πͺ New to the SAU: A Little About Me
A quick "hello" before the school year begins!
Dear SAU 50 Families & Community,
As we countdown the final days of summer, please allow me to introduce myself and share how excited I am to join the incredible communities of Greenland, New Castle, Newington, and Rye.
My journey to SAU 50 has taken the scenic route. Originally from Connecticut, and with stops along the way in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, I made my way to Maine in 2015. For the past nine years, I have lived and worked in York, and now I make the twice-daily trip over the Piscataqua River into lovely Seacoast New Hampshire.
π¬A Science Teacher at Heart
I started my career as a high school science teacher, and that background still shapes everything I do as an educational leader. Science teaches us to experiment, take bold risks, embrace the chaos of the learning process, and stay organized and procedural along the way.
βΎ The "Mom" Lens
Outside of work, my most important title is Mom. My 10-year-old son keeps life exciting and gives me a real-time, direct pulse on what kids (and families!) are navigating today. That perspective keeps me focused on creating environments where our students feel welcomed, engaged, and supported.
π§ Looking Ahead
My focus this year is simple: honoring the great work already happening here while actively building what comes next. This summer, our leadership team spent dedicated time recommitting to strategic planning and mapping out how we can best support our students and staff this year. Real progress happens together, and I am eager to hear your ideas, learn your stories, and partner with our community as we chart this next chapter.
Warmly,
Dr. Ellen Kaschuluk

π¬ Behind the Scenes!
Saving Trees. Shiny New Floors. Upgraded Kitchens. New Bathrooms, Bollards, and Doors.
Long before the first back-to-school backpack is packed, our maintenance, facilities, technology, and SAU Office staff are working hard to prepare our schools for a fantastic year ahead. Working tirelessly behind the scenes, they have painted, prepped, upgraded, polished, and renewed our learning spaces across the SAU. Their work ensures our schools are safe, inspiring places for our students. Next time you see a member of our operations, tech, or facility teams around town or in our school halls, please offer a quick note of thanks.

π³ Technology & Sustainability: Finding the Right Balance
Summer 2026 Technology Upgrades
π New Copiers
We have upgraded our copier fleet in SAU 50, replacing 19 copiers across all 6 buildings. As part of the upgrade, SAU 50 has implemented Papercut Print Management which enables all faculty to securely release their print jobs from any copier. It also tracks our impact on the environment, including the number of trees used, CO2 emissions, and electricity usage. Our goal is to bring awareness to our environmental footprint.
π Core Switching Upgrade
We have replaced the core switch which provides connectivity to all of the schools with a new fiber switch from Extreme Wireless and upgraded the bandwidth between and to the schools.
π» Annual Update of Student Devices
We have prepared all student devices for the first day of school, including deploying new touchscreen chromebooks, and repairing and updating existing student chromebooks.

π± Representing SAU 50 on the State Screen Time Task Force
The New Hampshire Department of Education recently launched a statewide School Screen Time Task Force to examine the role of digital devices in student learning, health, and well-being. We are proud to share that Michelle Pitts, Principal of Rye Elementary School, has been selected to serve on this panel. The task force will explore age-appropriate screen use, instructional benefits, and healthy learning environments. Please click here to learn more about the NHED School Screen Time Task Force. Individuals wishing to provide written comments to the task force may submit emails to submissions@doe.nh.gov.
π€ Bringing Student Voice to Our District Leadership
School Board Student Representatives
Students are at the center of our decisions, and their perspectives should shape our leadership conversations. While we are still ironing out the details, we are excited to announce that we will be adding student representation to our School Board conversations this year. This initiative gives our young leaders a direct seat at the table to share their insights and ideas. Stay tuned for more details and application information in the coming weeks!
π‘ Teaching and Learning Spotlight
A Message from David Hobbs, Assistant Superintendent
At the New England League of Middle Schools (NELMS) Conference in March 2026, educators from Rye Junior High shared their work as part of their ongoing commitment to professional development. Caroline Kepka and Anna Mallory presented on the Eco-Odyssey Project, detailing its hands-on instructional model and student learning outcomes. Additionally, Amy Reynolds and Anne Gilbert presented on RJHβs School Climate Redesign, highlighting strategic initiatives used to strengthen school culture and supportive environments.
Building on this momentum, Anne and Amy will be presenting at national level with the Association of Middle Level Education (AMLE) this November. Presenting at conferences like NELMS and AMLE provide opportunities to share successful school practices, engage in peer reflection, and bring valuable professional learning back to the district. Kudos on your work RJH!
βΊ Leading Beyond the School Year
MHT Summer Camp: Exploring Our Place
This summer, MHT campers from across the region used New Castle as a living classroom. Field adventures took campers to Fort Stark, Great Island Common, the Piscataqua River, local cemeteries, and the back channel to investigate habitats, walk to offshore islands at low tide, and experiment with underwater photography. On campus, students engaged in gardening, built Rube Goldberg contraptions, crafted nautical wares, and ran a weekly lemonade stand.
These experiences were brought to life through key community partnerships: sailing with KPYC, swim lessons at the YMCA, history and environmental enrichment with the New Castle Historical Society and Garden Club, and mentorship with Community Buddies, all of which were bolstered by parent David Severanceβs sponsorship of sailing and Rube Goldberg projects. Together, these collaborations preview MHTβs deepening commitment to place-based learning, using New Castleβs coastline, history, and community as natural extensions of our classroom.
