Staff Appreciation and Service Day are Coming!
BWMS Community,
We are excited for our Service Day next Friday. This is a time of great pride for our school and an opportunity for us to see the unified effort of our school community working in the same shirt and with the same purpose - service to others. I can think of no better lesson for all of us, to slow down and do what we can to help others in need. We will share the service assignments for students on Wednesday. I want to thank our staff, students and greater Big Walnut community for working with our Principal Leadership Team to help make this day happen. Thank you for SOARing and going beyond all expectations.
Staff Appreciation and Service Day in the same week... I would say that is fitting. We are ready to celebrate the Teachers and Staff who made this year fantastic. I may be a little bias but I think the BWMS staff is one of the best I have ever had the pleasure of calling colleagues. With that being said, help me make our staff feel special by encouraging your student to write a note of appreciation to the staff members who have been a positive influence to them this year. Believe me, these notes will stay visible for the years to come and offer words of encouragement and gratitude long after your student is gone from middle school.
Have a great weekend and Go Eagles!

6th Grade Coin War Update
The 6th grade ELA team wanted to follow up with the totals from the Coin War fundraiser that took place in March. As a school, we raised $1,054.15. This money is being sent directly to Water for South Sudan, a non-profit organization started by Salva Dut, the main character in the book, A Long Walk to Water. The goal was to raise $1000, so we could qualify for being entered into a drawing for a visit from Salva. With your help, and the whole school pulling together, we were able to surpass that goal! Of special note, for the past two years, Kemba Financial (Westerville branch) has provided the service of changing out the coins and distributing a check without a service fee! We are thankful for their partnership!
Thank you, Eagles for donating to this worthy cause!!
Washington DC Update for 8th Grade Students
Great news…our trip coordinators have been able to finalize our 2026 Washington DC trip! Here’s what you can expect in the next two weeks:
Chaperone groups and bus groups will be available to students on Friday May 1st.
Parents will be receiving a Spring Parent Packet with trip information next week. Please be looking for it to arrive in your email inbox. It will also be posted on the BWMS website.
On May 12th, Ms Ainsworth, Ms. Barr, and Mr. Grieger will be chatting with 8th graders who are attending the trip for 45 minutes. Students will be informed of specific trip expectations, given a packet (this packet will also be included in the parent packet that will be emailed next week), and have time to ask questions.
On May 14th, students will meet with their chaperone to go over some final reminders.
Lastly, bag checks will be on May 17th from 4:00 - 5:30. Students are permitted 1 suitcase/duffel bag that will be checked during this time at BWMS. This luggage will be securely stored overnight. Also, this is the time to drop off medication. Please refer to the medication emails sent from Ms. Ainsworth for more information about this.
This makes our departure day much easier for everyone. Please note that students are also allowed to bring a carry-on bag that can go on the bus. This bag will be checked by their chaperone on Monday May 18th before we head to our nation’s capitol.
