"SOARING TOWARD SUCCESS BY GROWING AND LEARNING TOGETHER"
💙 Go Falcons! 💙
Dear Falcon Family,
Fall is officially here, and October is always an exciting month at North Vermillion Elementary! We have many fun activities planned, along with opportunities for our students to learn, grow, and celebrate the season together.
Our school fundraiser is underway, and we appreciate the continued support of our families and community. We are also looking forward to our Walk-a-Thon on October 2, but if there is inclement weather, we will make it up on October 6th. This is always a fun event for our students, and we appreciate everyone who helps make it a success.
As we begin October, please remember that the first grading period ends on October 9. We encourage students to finish the grading period strong and continue putting forth their best effort in the classroom. We will then enjoy our fall break from October 10-18. We hope our students and families enjoy some well-deserved time together and have an opportunity to relax and enjoy the beautiful fall weather.
Our students in grades 3–6 will complete ILEARN Checkpoint assessments during the last week of October. These assessments provide teachers with valuable information about student progress and areas where additional support may be needed. We encourage students to do their best and come to school ready to learn each day.
We will hold our annual parent/teacher conferences after school on Tuesday, October 27th, from 3:30-7:00 pm. Look for that communication from your child’s classroom teacher in the near future.
Thank you for being such an active and caring part of our school community. Wishing you all a wonderful October!
All the Best,
Mrs. Scaggs
Principal

Homecoming Junior Court Attendants!
In Social Science, our third graders have been learning all about good citizenship—from following rules and directions to being honest, respectful, and responsible both at school and in the community. We are proud to announce that Micah Chambliss and Lenny Carpenter were chosen by their peers for this year’s Citizenship Character Award! To celebrate their outstanding leadership, they served as junior court attendants at the Homecoming football game on Friday, September 25th.
A Few Kind Words from Their Teachers
Micah Chambliss is being recognized as an outstanding citizen for Mrs. Hannah’s class. Micah consistently demonstrates respect toward both her peers and teachers, bringing a sweet spirit and kindness to school every day. She is always quick to volunteer, help classmates, and follow directions. A true friend to everyone, Micah leads by example through her compassion, gratitude, and courage during challenging moments.
Micah is the daughter of Jakeb and Kala Chambliss of Covington.
Leonard Carpenter was chosen by his classmates as the third grade boy who is an outstanding citizen. He demonstrates his citizenship daily, and is an excellent role model for his peers. Lenny is always willing to lend a helping hand, and is accepting of everyone around him. He is extremely kind, respectful, responsible, and follows directions well. We have recently learned about the character traits that make a good citizen, and Lenny is a fantastic candidate for crown bearer due to him having all the traits of a great citizen!
Lenny would like to be an engineer when he grows up. He is very interested in designing cars! His success in the classroom, along with his ability to work well with others will help him succeed with this goal. Lenny is such a great representative of a good citizen and a fantastic Falcon!
Lenny is the son of Kyle and Andrea Carpenter of Cayuga, Indiana. .

Jr. SRO of the Month for August
The nomination for Jr. SRO of the Month for August, recognizing the character trait of "Respect," goes to Nyah Holycross.
Ms. Swaby wrote: Nyah is a new student this year and has quickly made many friends. She shows respect to everyone around her by speaking kindly to them and doing the right thing. She shows respect to her teachers by listening when they teach and doing her best to finish her work. I am very proud to nominate Nyah for student of the month."
September Student of the Month
We are proud to recognize Kingston Sizemore, a second grade student in Mrs. Hanson's class, as our September Student of the Month! Mrs. Hanson shared, "Kingston is polite, follows classroom and school expectations while giving his best effort to our learning activities. Student Dress For Recess
In the past, we held a policy of no shorts between Fall Break and Spring Break. Rather than using these two school breaks to designate when students are allowed to wear shorts, parents/guardians are responsible for ensuring their child is properly dressed for outdoor recess each day. Students are expected to dress appropriately for the weather, as recess will be held outdoors whenever conditions permit. Appropriate clothing for colder weather may include coats, hats, gloves, and long pants. Please note that students will be sent outside for recess regardless of whether they are dressed in shorts or other clothing not suitable for the weather. The school will not provide alternative clothing for students who arrive without appropriate attire, nor will indoor supervision be available during recess, as staff members are engaged in scheduled duties and meetings at that time.
Families who need assistance in obtaining seasonal clothing for their child are encouraged to contact the school office so we can connect them with community resources and service providers.
Grades
You may have noticed the addition of a few extra subjects in your child's grades. These include conduct and special area classes (STEAM, music, and PE). Conduct grades give feedback on how your child demonstrates respect, responsibility, and cooperation during the school day. Special area grades reflect effort and participation in classes beyond the core subjects. Together, these grades provide a more complete picture of your child’s learning, growth, and success at school.
Preschool Enrollment
We currently have a few openings in our preschool program!
🎉 Important Information 🎉
👩🏻💻 Harmony
Please make sure your contact information (email, phone, address) are updated in Harmony so that you do not miss any important information.
📲 School Messenger/Delays and Cancellations
As you know, North Vermillion uses the School Messenger calling system to notify you of any school delays, closings or other important issues that may arise. We also want to remind you that North Vermillion will continue to post delays on Channels 2 and 10 out of Terre Haute in the event of a delay or closing. If you have not heard through the calling system and feel like there may be reason for a delay or closing please make sure to check one of these news stations.
🚙 Student Drop Off/Pick Up Lane
For those of you who drop off your students at school each morning, we ask that you please drive
around to the north door, make the drop-off in the drop-off lane, then move on to exit the north parking lot. Students may exit your vehicle at any point while you are parked along the sidewalk. This applies to preschool & elementary students. Preschool families may pull up along the grass beside the playground area in order to safely unbuckle your child and get them to the door.
During pick up at the end of the day, cars are not to drive around the line of vehicles and should follow the flow of traffic. Thank you for your patience and assistance in making our school a safe place.
🦺 Safety Reminders
Bus Flashers & Stop Arms: It is illegal for traffic to pass a bus from either direction when it is loading or unloading students. The flashing yellow lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop. The flashing red lights and stop arms mean traffic is to stop from both directions. This is for the safety and protection of the children while loading or unloading.
Safety Reminders for Students: When waiting at bus stops, students are to be on the sidewalks or away from the edge of the street and not playing out in the street. Students are to remain on the sidewalk and wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before moving to the bus to board. Also, students are to remain seated at all times when the bus is in motion.
School Bus Reminders: Parents, we are asking for your help. Please leave your porch light on in the mornings (especially on the rural routes). This will give more light and serve as a safety precaution while your students are loading the bus. It also allows the driver to see the kids better as they approach the stop.
🚌 End of Day Transportation
We ask that parents please send a note to school or call 765-492-7010 (transportation option) before 1:00 p.m. regarding any transportation changes. We cannot guarantee information about changes called in after 1:00 p.m. will get to all the proper personnel. We do our best, but school dismissal is often the busiest time of the day.
📱Attendance Line
Parents are reminded that you can call 765-492-7010 (attendance option) to report your student absent from school. Just leave the student's name, teacher, grade level, and a brief reason.
Cafeteria Updates
🥞 A good breakfast can make or break your day.🥛
Location: North Vermillion Elementary School
Time: 7:50 – 8:30
Full Price $2.35
$.30 Reduced Price
Adult Breakfast: $2.80
$.75 Milk Only
The School Meal Programs make wholesome, nutritious, and tasty meals available to all
school children, with the expectation that families that can afford to contribute will pay for
their children’s meals.
Every year, we work to ensure all eligible children are certified for free or reduced-price
meals. Sometimes, children who are not certified for free meals enter the cafeteria
without the funds needed to purchase a breakfast or lunch. When the child has a
negative account of $10 or more, they will receive an alternate entrée until payment is
made. This is a difficult situation for the child and our staff. The USDA mandates us to
follow a meal charging policy. The NVCSC meal charging policy is located on the
school’s website in the back-to-school letter under the cafeteria section.
You are always welcome to prepay online or pay in the cafeteria. When you pay
online understand that you will be charged a fee.
