Principal's Update

Dear Parkview Families,

I think we can all agree that we are more than ready to say goodbye to these 95-degree days! With cooler weather finally in the forecast, it is starting to feel like fall, just in time for all of our upcoming pumpkin patch field trips and one of our favorite Parkview traditions, the Harvest Festival!

Our PTO Events Crew is busy preparing for our Harvest Festival on Friday, October 23, from 5:00–7:00 PM, and we need your help to make the fall magic happen! Preparations for our beloved Flames of Fall pumpkin display will begin on Thursday, October 22, and continue throughout the day on Friday. We will also need volunteers on Saturday morning to help with cleanup and takedown. If you can spare an hour or two, please check out the SignUpGenius below and grab a shift. These events are only possible because of our amazing volunteers!

Students are invited to contribute to our Flames of Fall display by carving a pumpkin at home and bringing it to school on Friday, October 23. We can't wait to see all of the creative, spooky, and silly designs lighting up our campus that evening!

Friday, October 23, is shaping up to be a jam-packed day of Parktastic fall fun! We will kick off the morning with our monthly Parent Café, where families can enjoy coffee, treats, and conversation outside the front office. At lunchtime, students will have another opportunity to spend their hard-earned PAW Bucks at the PAW Bucks Store. Then, when the sun begins to set, the real fall magic begins!

Our Harvest Festival will feature carnival games, the Swish Mobile, face painting, cotton candy, food trucks, and plenty of festive fun! Our very own Parktastics will be performing spooky Halloween tunes to set the mood, and our Flames of Fall display will light up the evening with student-created jack-o'-lanterns. We will also have delicious homemade pies for sale as a fundraiser for our 5th graders heading to camp. Fifth-grade families, please see this separate SignUpGenius to donate a pie or volunteer for a shift at the pie booth.

Students are welcome to dress in their favorite festive attire or Halloween costumes for the evening. Just a reminder that our school costume guidelines still apply: no masks, blood, gore, or weapons. We will have lighting around campus, but since it gets dark earlier this time of year, families may want to bring flashlights or glow bracelets for a little extra visibility and peace of mind.

One important reminder for families attending the festival: Unlike our regular school day, we will not have staff supervising students as we do during recess. Parents and guardians are responsible for supervising their children throughout the event and helping us ensure everyone stays safe while enjoying the festivities.

We are looking forward to a wonderful evening filled with pumpkins, music, laughter, and all the things that make fall at Parkview so special. Thank you to our PTO Events Crew and all of the volunteers who work so hard to bring these traditions to life. We can't wait to celebrate with you!

Parkview, that's where I want to be!

Big Idea of the Month: Self-Control

We all have moments when we want to do one thing, but we know we should do something else. Maybe it’s waiting our turn, stopping a game when it’s time to clean up, or taking a breath instead of saying something we might regret. These everyday moments are chances to practice self-control: choosing to do what’s best, even when you don’t want to.

Self-control is not about never getting upset or making mistakes. It’s about learning to pause, notice how we’re feeling, and make a choice that helps us—and the people around us. Children develop this skill over time, and everyday situations at home provide lots of opportunities to practice.

Try asking your child:

  • When is it hardest for you to use self-control?
  • What helps you stop and think before you react?
  • Can you think of a time when you made a good choice even though it was hard?

Try sharing with your child:

  • A time when it was hard for you to use self-control.
  • Something you do to help yourself calm down or make a good choice.
  • A time when you were proud of yourself for handling a difficult situation well.

Remember, self-control is a skill—not something we’re simply born knowing how to do. Every time children pause, take a breath, and make a thoughtful choice, they’re practicing and getting a little better!
