What will we be learning this week?
Reading
Hi families!
This week, our class is continuing our exciting study of outer space as we read Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11 by Brian Floca. Students will continue to explore how authors teach readers about real historical events—in this case, the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. What We’re Learning (Lessons 17–18):
-
Deepen understanding of the Apollo 11 mission through close reading of Moonshot.
-
Analyze text features—such as diagrams, labels, and illustrations—to learn more about space travel, the spacecraft, and the astronauts’ journey.
-
Identify the main idea in different sections of the text.
-
Use supporting details to explain important information about the mission.
-
Study Brian Floca’s craft:
-
Explore his powerful word choice,
-
Notice sensory language,
-
Examine his vivid verbs.
-
-
Explain how the author’s language creates mood, excitement, and a sense of wonder about space.
-
Understand how nonfiction texts teach readers, including how authors use features and language to shape meaning.
-
Math
In math class, students are learning how to break numbers apart and put them back together using part–whole strategies. These strategies help children better understand how numbers work and how to solve real-life math problems with confidence.
➕➖ Addition & Subtraction (Up to 10,000)
Students are working on solving real-world problems using addition and subtraction with numbers up to 10,000. They learn to:
- Break large numbers into smaller, easier parts
- Use models such as number lines, place value charts, and drawings
- Choose strategies that make sense for each problem
- Explain their thinking and show their work
Example:
If a store sold 3,248 items in the morning and 1,756 in the afternoon, students learn how to break the numbers apart to find the total sold.
✖️➗ Multiplication & Division (Within 100)
Students are also using part–whole strategies to solve multiplication and division problems with numbers within 100. They practice:
- Breaking numbers into equal groups
- Using arrays, drawings, and equations
- Understanding how multiplication and division are related
- Solving real-life problems like sharing, grouping, and counting equal sets
Example:
If 48 crayons are shared equally among 6 students, students learn how to break the total into equal groups to find how many each student gets.
Science/Social Studies
Next week students will end our social studies unit by learning about the Native Americans of the Great Plains region.

Reading Specialist
Welcome back, 3rd grade students and families! My name is Mrs. Amanda Montgomery and I will be one of your child's Reading Specialists for this year. I am excited to start this school year by getting to know all of your child's strengths and then making a plan to help them grow as readers. Please do not hesitate to email me (amontgomery@marietta-city.k12.ga.us) or call, if you have any questions or concerns. This is going to be a great year of growth.
3rd grade will start their beginning of the year literacy assessments on August 4th. This process will take about 3 weeks to complete and it is very important for your child to be at school, ready to give their best! Thank you for all you do at home to support us here at school.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Amanda Montgomery
EIP
Reminder: Your student has made multiplication flash cards in class. Please encourage them to study the cards that come home to support strategy modeling in class.
IRR
I am an interrelated special education teacher; I will co-teach in Mrs. Baker and Ms. Castillo’s classrooms this school year. This is my second year teaching, and I am so excited to be teaching 3rd grade again at Park Street! If your child is in Mrs. Baker or Ms. Castillo’s homeroom and has an IEP, I will be their case manager this year. I will be your contact person regarding your child’s IEP needs. Please know that I am here to support your child and communicate with necessary staff information for the implementation of your child’s IEP. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
