Dear Orrington Eagle Families,
Congratulations on completing the first full week of the 2024-25 school year! Our kindergarten students have done a wonderful job of adapting to the school day and settling into school routines. They have learned how to compost and recycle after they finish eating their lunch, are thoroughly enjoying their time at recess every day, and developing new friendships. We are very proud of them! Our returning students have been good role models to our kindergarten friends as well. They have also smoothly adjusted to their new grade levels and embraced the familiar routines here at Orrington. Lunch recess thus far has gone very well, and we will continue to be present to ensure healthy dynamics continue - - it has been a highlight of our days to take time to see how the students are interacting with old and new friends during this time. Big shout out to our educators who have been very vigilant about creating welcoming classroom environments for all students and ensuring that new students feel included.
Supporting the Needs of Our Students
Orrington is committed to meeting the diverse academic and social-emotional needs of all students by creating an inclusive environment that fosters both intellectual growth and emotional well-being. Each classroom is thoughtfully designed to address these varied needs, integrating differentiated instruction, collaborative learning, and social-emotional learning strategies. This holistic approach ensures that every student is supported, challenged, and empowered to thrive academically and personally.
As you know, our classrooms support a range of student needs at every grade level related to academic and social emotional skill sets. The ability to persevere with challenging work and individual frustration tolerance is an area of growth for many elementary school students. Sometimes this results in very strong emotions for some students. There may be times when a student in your child’s class reaches the limits of their frustration and can have an outburst. Please know that we have plans and supports in place for students in these moments, as well as for their classmates.
Community Night
We are looking forward to seeing everyone at our Community Night on Thursday, September 12th! The format will be a presentation from ourselves in the auditorium from 6:00 to 6:25. From 6:30 to 6:55, you can attend a community time with your child's teacher, and then from 7:00 to 7:25, you can attend a second community time if you have another child at Orrington. Otherwise, from that time, you can join us in the auditorium for some light refreshments until the PTA begins its first meeting at 7:30 in the auditorium.
Safety
In September and October, Orrington will have a series of soft drills (no alarms) and drills with law enforcement to practice fire drills and lockdown drills. If you wish to opt your child out of the drills with alarms and law enforcement, please let us know the dates. These drills are crucial to the safety of our students and staff as we all practice how to quickly respond. We are also mindful of our students and sensitively approach these drills, and we are able to accommodate any sensory needs for the alarms.

Volunteer during Lunch!
Want to make your kid's or kids' day? Volunteer to serve lunch with your fellow friendly Orrington parents!
What: Parent volunteers help students properly compost and recycle their lunch waste. One volunteer are scheduled per day. Bring your ID for check-in in the school front office.
When: Volunteers are needed from 11:15 AM to 1:15 PM.
