At Oakhurst, we are proud to celebrate numerous cultures as part of our daily practice throughout the year, and we are excited when we get an entire month to examine a particular culture more closely!
Please join us at our Hispanic heritage-themed community circle tomorrow (Friday, September 19) at 8:30 a.m. to celebrate a beautiful culture!
If your family would like more Hispanic Heritage celebration information and celebrations, check out this Hispanic Heritage Month choice board from our All Means All committee.
A Message from Señor Valerio
Hola Familia,
On September 15th we began the month-long celebration of cultural heritage for Hispanic and Latino people who live in the United States. We celebrate our heritage and the many significant contributions and influences that Hispanic and Latino Americans have had on American society. We encourage you to join us in our exploration to celebrate “Hispanic Heritage Month!” How? Here are just a few of the many ways to celebrate:
Listen to Music
A great way to teach children about Hispanic culture is by exposing them to music in Spanish. Choose age-appropriate music or music by important Latino figures to listen to or just sing along. The 21 Speaking countries song in Rockalingua (Username: fvalerio@csdecatur.net and Password: spanish20 )
Get into the Kitchen
Food is always something that reminds people of home. Hispanic culture has a plethora of cuisines to enjoy from every Hispanic culture. Parents can get into the kitchen with their children and prepare recipes from diverse Hispanic and Latino cultures. Another option is to eat from a Hispanic restaurant that serves authentic dishes and try something new. Explore the surrounding area to find Argentinian empanadas, Cuban sandwiches, El Salvadorian pupusas, and Mexican tacos.
Read Spanish or Bilingual Books
Books and stories often tell a story that reflects the background of a certain culture. You can read Spanish-language or bilingual books to your children to learn more about various folklore or significant cultural events. We have developed a virtual Spanish library that you will be able to access by clicking here
Have a great Hispanic Heritage Month celebration! Celebremos juntos!
HAVE YOU COMPLETED THE ANNUAL UPDATE?
We have many families who have not yet completed CSD's Annual Data Update, and the deadline is September 30th. If we're the first school to reach 100% completion, the entire school will get extra recess (thank you, Principal Triplett!) - but we've got a ways to go!
Please make it a priority to complete this important update so we have all of your contact and student health information on hand.
Click the image below, and please reach out to Ms. Bragg with questions: jennifer.bragg@csdecatur.net.

Oakhurst Gifted Program Recommendations
Each fall semester the Gifted review team looks at existing student data to discuss students’ needs and determine if further evaluation for gifted identification is needed. If you are interested in having the team discuss your child’s needs, you may complete a Recommendation for Review Form (found at the website below) and turn it in to the Gifted & Talented Specialist at your child’s school before Wednesday, October 1. No additional information is needed.
The Gifted & Talented Specialists for Oakhurst are Amanda Lockwood and Courtney Hartnett. For more detailed information about the review process and to obtain a copy of the Recommendation for Review Form, please contact the Gifted & Talented Specialist for your school at alockwood@csdecatur.net or visit the following website: https://www.csdecatur.net/our-district-5f/departments/teaching-and-learning/gifted-and-talented-services
Food Insecurity Request Form
Oakhurst families, please complete and submit this food insecurity request form if your student is experiencing food insecurity within the home and is in need of some supplemental weekend snacks.
The Decatur Education Foundation supplies Oakhurst with snack bags for any student in need. This request form will go directly to our school counselor, Ms. King, and she will send home a snack bag with your student every Friday. Please go through each week's snack bag to remove any snack you may not want your child to have due to allergy concerns, etc.
