September is Suicide Awareness Month – Building Connections, Supporting Wellness
Dear OUSD Community,
September is recognized nationally as Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month, a solemn reminder of the importance of mental health and the shared responsibility we have in safeguarding the well-being of our scholars. While this is especially pertinent given the current climate of loss and mourning, it also reminds us of the power of connection, care, and hope as we move forward together.
As educators, families, and community members, we each play a vital role in ensuring that our children feel seen and supported. Preventing loss through suicide requires our collective commitment. Each of us can take meaningful steps by learning to recognize the warning signs and by becoming familiar with the resources available to assist those in crisis.
We encourage you to:
Stay connected with your child by checking in regularly and listening without judgment.
Stay alert to warning signs, including sudden mood shifts, withdrawal from friends, or expressions of hopelessness.
Seek support without delay if you have concerns about your child’s safety or emotional well-being.
Our schools are staffed with caring professionals, including counselors and psychologists, who are ready to provide assistance. Together, we can foster a culture of care, awareness, and prevention. By working in partnership, we strengthen the protective network around our scholars and provide them with the support they need to thrive.

By staying connected, informed, and engaged, we can create schools where no child feels alone and every student has hope for the future.
With care and commitment,
Rachel H. Monárrez, PhD
Superintendent of Schools
