Half Day this Wednesday
PSAT and SAT Week is Here!!!
Message from the Principal
Good Afternoon CompSci High Families,
What a great week we had at CompSci High! Spirit Week brought tremendous energy and participation from students across all grade levels. We ended the school week with two grade-level Color Wars, both planned and executed by our Student Senate, who did an outstanding job bringing our school community together. On Saturday evening, we welcomed more than 130 students to our Homecoming Dance! It was great to see our students enjoying themselves, spending time with friends, and making memories together.
This week, we shift our attention back to academics as we move closer to the end of the first quarter. Our 10th and 11th graders will be taking the PSAT, while our seniors will be taking the SAT. It is extremely important that students are in school on their scheduled testing day, arrive well-rested, and come prepared with a fully charged Chromebook and their charger. Please help us reinforce the importance of these assessments and encourage your student to give their very best effort.
Also this week, our seniors will have their Senior Portraits taken on Friday. As we enter the final stretch of the quarter, please continue checking PowerSchool, encouraging your student to stay on top of assignments, and making attendance a priority.
Thank you, as always, for your continued partnership and support. We look forward to a strong academic week and finishing the first quarter on a positive note. Have a wonderful week!
Mr. Carter
Principal

Yearbooks are ON SALE
Field Trip Medications and Emergency Meds (inhalers and epipen)
With field trips coming up, please review the medical information you have provided to the school. If a doctor’s order states that your student needs an inhaler or EpiPen, the school must have both a current order and the medication. If the order allows your student to carry the medication themselves, they must have it with them on the day of the trip or they will not be permitted to attend.
We know some families may have listed an inhaler or EpiPen on school forms because their student needed one in the past. Please check that the information we have is current and accurate. An outdated doctor’s order can also prevent a student from attending a field trip. If you receive an email from us about missing or outdated documentation before a trip, please respond and address it as soon as possible so there are no surprises on the day of the trip.
These are district requirements, and the school must follow the direction of the Health Services Team.
Food Delivers are NOT Allowed
Technology - Chromebooks and Chargers
Each student has been provided a Chromebook and charger, both of which have identifying numbers assigned to that student. Please remind your student to keep track of both items and take care of them throughout the school year.
If a charger is lost, there is a $20 replacement fee. Students and families are also responsible for damage to Chromebooks and will be billed in accordance with the Technology Agreement.
New for 2026–2027: Personal Electronic Device Expectations
Beginning this school year, all CREC secondary schools, including CompSci High, will have an Electronic-Free School Day from arrival through dismissal. Students will store cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, and other personal electronic devices in a locked Cell Phone Home in their first-period classroom and retrieve them at the end of the day. iPads, tablets, and non-school-issued computers should not be brought to school, as students will use school-issued technology for all academic needs. This change is designed to give students a school day focused on learning, attention, relationships, and being fully present without the distractions created by personal devices. If a device is seen, heard, or used during the school day, it will be collected and securely stored in the Main Office, with repeated violations requiring parent/guardian pickup. We appreciate our families partnering with us as we make this important change and create the best possible learning environment for every CompSci High student. - See the full policy below -

Important Parent Reminder- Please Read - Athletics – 24-Hour Rule
As part of our commitment to a positive and respectful athletic experience, we follow the 24-Hour Rule for all athletic programs. This means that parents and family members should not approach coaches within 24 hours of a game to discuss concerns or frustrations. This includes topics such as playing time, strategy, other players, or the outcome or performance of the team.
If concerns do arise, student-athletes should take the lead by scheduling a meeting with their coach. If, after that meeting, concerns remain, families may request a meeting that includes the coach, the Athletic Director, and the player.
If communication with a coach is necessary, it should be done through email and never directly after a game. We appreciate your partnership in helping us ensure our athletics program is built on sportsmanship, respect, and student growth.

CREC Transportation:
Transportation (860) 524-4077
Personal Electronic Devices: Bell-to-Bell Rule
1. The Rule: No Phones or Devices, Bell to Bell
All CREC secondary schools are personal electronic device-free from the first bell through dismissal. During the school day, students may not use, hold, show, wear, or access a personal electronic device anywhere on campus, including classrooms, hallways, restrooms, the cafeteria, lunch, passing time, advisory, or study periods.
Devices must be turned off or silenced and stored in the school-approved location for the entire school day. A device kept in a pocket, backpack, or worn on the body does not meet this expectation.
2. Who and What This Covers
The rule applies to all students in grades 6–12 and includes personal devices capable of communication, recording, internet access, entertainment, or artificial intelligence. This includes cell phones, smartwatches, fitness trackers, earbuds/headphones, smart glasses, tablets, e-readers, personal laptops, and gaming devices.
School-issued Chromebooks and other technology used at the direction of staff are permitted and continue to follow the school's Acceptable Use policies.
3. How Students Store Devices
Students must securely store their devices at the beginning of the school day and retrieve them at dismissal. Students arriving late must immediately store their devices as directed by school staff.
Approved storage may include locking pouches, locked classroom bins, assigned lockers, or designated secure storage in the Main Office. Each school will communicate its specific storage procedure to families.
4. Photographs and Recordings
Students may not photograph, record, livestream, or transmit audio, video, or images during the school day unless specifically authorized by a staff member or administrator.
Unauthorized recording may result in disciplinary action and may also be addressed through school policies related to privacy, harassment, bullying, cyberbullying, and school climate.
5. Academic Integrity
Using a personal electronic device or unauthorized artificial intelligence tool to access, give, receive, or record information during an assignment or assessment may be considered academic dishonesty. Students remain responsible for following the school's Academic Integrity and Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence policies.
6. Reaching a Student During the Day
Families who need to reach their student during the school day should contact the Main Office by phone or email. Staff will ensure that messages are delivered to students, including urgent messages. Students who need to contact a parent or guardian during the school day may also do so through the Main Office.
7. In a School Emergency
During an emergency, students should remain off personal devices and follow the directions of school staff. Personal device use can distract students from important instructions, spread inaccurate information, and interfere with emergency communications.
CREC and school staff will communicate directly with families through official notification systems during emergencies or unexpected situations.
8. Field Trips and Special Events
Expectations for field trips, athletics, dances, and other school-sponsored activities may vary depending on the activity. Any exception to the regular rule will be communicated in advance.
If no exception is communicated, the regular bell-to-bell expectation remains in effect.
9. What Happens If a Student Breaks the Rule
Enforcement will be immediate and consistent. If a personal electronic device is seen, heard, worn, not turned in, or used during the school day, it will be collected, secured in the Main Office, and returned at dismissal. There is no warning before the device is collected.
For a first or second occurrence, the device is secured until dismissal, the family is notified, and the incident is documented.
A third occurrence results in family contact and the creation of a support plan, which may include temporarily requiring the student to check the device into the Main Office each morning.
Persistent violations beyond the third occurrence may require parent/guardian pickup of the device and an individualized device plan. Egregious violations, including refusing to surrender a device, unauthorized recording, harassment or bullying, academic dishonesty, or using a device in a manner that significantly disrupts school, may result in additional school consequences.
The goal throughout this process is to address the device while keeping students in class and focused on learning.
10. Taking Care of Devices
Students bring personal electronic devices to school at their own risk. Devices should be turned off and stored only in the school's designated secure location.
When the school collects or stores a device, reasonable care will be taken to keep it secure. The school is not responsible for pre-existing damage, ordinary wear, or devices that students fail to store according to school expectations.
Attendance Reminder
- CompSci High would like to remind all families of the Attendance Policy. There are actually two Attendance Policies that all schools run - School Attendance and Meeting (class) Attendance.
School Day Attendance - Impact on state reporting for Truancy and course credit
- What is an "Excused School Day Absence"? An absence that the school has confirmed the student was not/will not be in due to something occurring outside of school through documentation.
- Per State of CT Policy - All families can "excuse" the first 9 school absences with a parent note, email, or phone call.
- After Nine (9) School Absences, an excused absence will only be put in the system if a:
Student illness as documented by an appropriately licensed medical professional;
Student observance of a religious holiday;
Death in student’s family or other circumstance outside the student’s family’s control;
Mandated court appearances;
Lack of transportation that is normally provided by a district other than the one the student attends;
Extraordinary educational opportunities pre-approved by CompSci administration
Disciplinary purposes (as decided by CREC and/or CompSci)
- Any School Absences that do not meet the above will be coded as Unexcused
Class (Meeting) Attendance - Impact on Credit being Awarded in each Class
Any student with 12 or more absences in a half year course or 24 absences in a full year course will lose credit and be required to go through the Appeal Process to potentially have credit restored.
- Types of Absences with Class Attendance:
- 1. Exempt Absences - do not count as absences in a class. These include:
- Religious Holidays - Parent communication is required
- Standardized Testing - Documentation is needed
- College Acceptance Orientation - Documentation is needed
- Death in the Family - Parent communication is required
- Appointments with Student Support Staff - School managed
- Long Term Illness (3+ Day) - Medical documentation is needed
- Mandated Court appearance - Official documentation is needed
- Field Trip - School managed
- Suspension(s) - School managed
- 2. Appealable Absences - class absences that can be appealed and removed if student/family complete the process. These include:
- College Visits: Parents/Guardians are asked to schedule all visits during school vacations or weekends.
- Student-initiated Appointments
- Short Term Illness: Up to two (2) consecutive school days verified by a note
- Non-emergency Medical Visits: Doctor and dental appointments should be scheduled for after-school hours.
- Family Vacations/Trips: Discretion should be used in planning such events. CREC Magnet Schools strongly discourages travel outside of school vacation periods. Students and parents/guardians should realize that if extended vacations contribute to excessive absence, an appeal for reinstatement of credit will not be possible.
- Visits to Nurse: Visits to the school nurse will count as Appealable absences if the student brings a pass from the teacher and the nurse deems the visit necessary.
- Early Dismissal: Proper documentation for early dismissal will include official documentation from the school nurse or documentation from the parent/guardian including the reason that early dismissal is necessary.
- 3. Unappealable Absences - Absences that cannot be appealed
- Class Cuts (in school and skipping class)
- Leaving School Grounds (suppose to be in school but have left school grounds)
