A message from Dr. Jarred Zapolnik, Superintendent of South Range Local Schools

“Raising the Standard: Better Every Day”

Dear South Range Community:

Our theme for the 2026–27 school year is Raising the Standard: Better Every Day. This theme represents both a challenge and a commitment. It directly aligns with the Raider Way, which guides our work toward achieving the district’s mission and vision. The Raider Way includes four key components: High Expectations, Communication & Collaboration, Student Performance, and Safety & Resources. We do not have to be perfect; we must continue to improve. We strive to become better for our students, better for one another, and better as a school community. This year, we have established rigorous district goals that challenge us to Raise the Standard and Get Better Every Day for every student.

In September of 2026, our district learned that all three South Range buildings exceeded state standards on the 2026 Ohio State Report Card, with historic positive trends in student achievement and progress. Our students are also receiving recognition beyond our district, with South Range Elementary School, South Range Middle School, and South Range High School all ranked among the top elementary, middle, and high schools in Ohio by U.S. News & World Report. These accomplishments reflect the dedication of our staff, the support of our families, and the hard work of our students.

But the Raider Way is about more than rankings, scores, and championships. It is about people. It is the teacher who takes an extra moment to check on a student, the coach who teaches lessons beyond the playing field, the staff member who offers encouragement, the student who includes someone who feels left out, the family who supports our schools, and the community that comes together when we need one another.

Throughout this newsletter, you will see just a small part of the story of how South Range educates, supports, and celebrates our students. From historic academic achievement and college, career, workforce, and military readiness to athletics, activities, hands-on learning, and our Raider Profile students, there is much to celebrate.

Thank you for continuing to Raise the Standard, for believing in our students, and for helping make South Range a community where we Get Better Every Day. I am honored to serve as superintendent. Together, we continue to move our story forward—with unity, strength, and Raider pride.

Go Raiders,

Jarred

The Treasurer's Report The Treasurer's Report

July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026

Balance Sheet

The Treasurer is fiscally responsible for annual General Fund budget of approximately $15,700,000. He works closely with the Superintendent to report, monitor and plan fiscal operations.

For additional financial information, please contact Mario A. Nero Jr., Treasurer/CFO at 330-549-5475

Where the Money is Spent

  • Personnel Costs (78%)

    • Benefits that are paid by the district on behalf of employees. Examples include Retirement contributions, Medicare, and all health-related insurances.

  • All Other Expenses (8%)

Cash Balance

One of the things the school district monitors is the amount of cash in the bank. Districts have to make sure they have enough money on hand to carry the district through months of deficit spending during the fiscal year. South Range Local Schools currently has a healthy amount of cash on hand (in its savings account). At the end of Fiscal Year 2026, the district had four months worth of cash in the bank. The board and administration are continuously looking for operating efficiencies to save money on expenses. The district needs to make sure they have a plan for how the funds they have collected are used, and to ensure schools are taxing residents appropriately and responsibly.

Welcome Back: An Update from Mr. Matos, SRES Principal

Off to a Great Start

It feels like the school year just started and it’s hard to believe we are already at the end of the first nine weeks at South Range Elementary! We are off to a great start in our classrooms and throughout the K-12 complex. This is an exciting time for our school as we continue to implement new programs and utilize new resources in all of our classrooms. With your continued support and encouragement, we will provide a positive environment that will enhance the lives of our children. I hope we may all continue to work together to achieve maximum success for our students.

ES Updates

New Staff

I would like to welcome our new staff members to South Range Elementary, as well as, welcome our current staff members to new positions for the 26-27 school year. We hired one new classroom teacher this summer, Mrs. Gianna Guerrieri, who is teaching Kindergarten. We also hired our new full-time School Counselor, Dr. Emily Herman McMillan. We would also like to welcome Mrs. Abbey Ausnehmer to our elementary from the middle school as one of our Intervention Specialists. We also have several of our current staff members who have moved into new positions this year. Mrs. Katie Taylor moved from Title I to Kindergarten and Mrs. Katie McMurray moved Kindergarten to 2nd grade. Also, we would like to say congratulations to Mrs. Jodi Puhl as she moved from Kindergarten to Title I as she prepares to retire at the end of December.

PTO

The elementary PTO is an integral part of many of the events that take place to support our students and staff. From the beginning of the year, the PTO welcomes our students back to school with a giant Welcome Back sign at the front of the building where parents, students and staff can take pictures. This year, our PTO helped all of our elementary families by lightening their supply lists as they provided all of the tissues and Clorox wipes for our teachers!

The PTO has been busy this fall from organizing the Maze Craze Family Night and Mr. Jeff music assembly to running the Pink Ribbon Game fundraising event, Conference Night Bake Sale and the Harvest Day/Halloween classroom parties. The PTO is also preparing for our 3rd grade Veterans Day program and looking ahead to our holiday celebrations in December with our Holiday Sing in kindergarten and 2nd grade and our classroom parties before winter break.

The annual PTO Auction will be held on Saturday, November 14th, 2026 at the Kennsington Golf Club. The auction is the PTO’s largest fundraiser of the year and all proceeds from the auction go directly to our students, staff and classroom needs. Please consider coming out to PTO Auction to help support our elementary school.

Raider Profile Students

At the October Board of Education meeting, the elementary school was honored to recognize our “Raider Profile” students. Congratulations to the following students who were recommended by their teachers for demonstrating the characteristics that define what it means to be a Raider at South Range Elementary!

Kindergarten: Ava Strupkus

1st Grade: Vivian Gray

2nd Grade: Anthony Ardabell

3rd Grade: Maria Kovacich

4th Grade: Evelyn Koller

Student Enrichment

The PTO Enrichment Committee looks for new and exciting ways to enrich the education of our students. Over the past several school years, the enrichment committee organized a field trip to OH WOW in Youngstown, a hands-on, educational field trip to Beech Creek Gardens and Nature Preserve in Alliance, a trip to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton and the YSU Baseball School Day Game with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. We are in our 3rd year for JA in a Day with Junior Achievement of Eastern Ohio at South Range Elementary. This has been such a great success that JA in a Day will be back this December. We are also happy to announce that we have been selected once again to return to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton for a spring field trip in May and the Enrichment Committee will be working with individual grade levels this year to support their various activities.

Report Card - 25-26

Congratulations to all of our elementary students and staff from the 2025-2026 school year on another excellent report card. Our elementary school earned 5 stars in Achievement, Progress and Gap Closing and 4 stars in Early Literacy. Our students in 3rd and 4th grade demonstrated high levels of achievement in their Language Arts and Math skills. Students in 3rd grade scored an 88% in Reading and a 93% in Math. In 4th grade, students earned a 91% in Reading and a 98% in Math. To view more report card information, please visit the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce’s website at https://education.ohio.gov/ and search the 2025-2026 School Report Cards tile for South Range Elementary.

School Counselor

Our new elementary school counselor, Dr. Emily Herman McMillan, has been meeting with K-2 students in their classrooms to work on feeling and strengths, being good listeners and making good choices. She also has been working with grades 3 & 4 on emotions, strengths and having a growth mindset this fall. Dr. Herman McMillan has been meeting with small groups of students, as well as, one-on-one, to meet our students’ needs. Dr. Herman McMillan organized one of the biggest events that takes place in October in the elementary school, “Healthy Habits Week.” This is a week that our elementary school focuses on teaching our students about the importance of living a healthy life. Each day, there is a different school-wide healthy habit theme, such as “Try it Tuesday” where students try new foods in the cafeteria from Mrs. Pierce. Students and staff dress the same and celebrate healthy living while we teach our students about different aspects of our health and how they can work to make healthy choices. The week ends with our final activity, our Harvest Day/Halloween classroom parties from our PTO. Over the next few months, Dr. Herman McMillan will be introducing our K-4 Attendance Challenge, organizing our Holiday Donation Drives and continuing to support our students, staff and families.

Happy November: An Update from Mrs. Ware, SRMS Principal

It's amazing how quickly the school year is going! Students have successfully completed the first nine weeks and have much to celebrate. As we head into November, I am continually grateful for the South Range community. This month, I want to continue celebrating our students, families, and community while also highlighting how we can give back to our students.

I encourage everyone to check out this month's newsletter, which is jam packed with information and celebrations: https://app.smore.com/n/72x69. Please continue to use this newsletter and our school website to stay informed about staff and student celebrations, important dates, and upcoming events. In addition, look for opportunities to support our school through our upcoming food drive or joining our amazing PTO.

Our middle school teachers are excited to extend learning into nature and the outdoors as the weather allows. We’ll also continue to provide opportunities for outdoor recess whenever possible, so please make sure students have appropriate outdoor clothing.

As we move into this season of gratitude, thank you for all you do to support our students and our school. Together, we continue to show The Raider Way: Respect. Responsibility. Resilience.

Erika's Lighthouse Presentation

Our district is committed to student wellness. In November, our middle school students participated in the "Erika's Lighthouse" presentation. The presentation focused on understanding depression, promoting positive mental health, and encouraging students to seek help when needed.

The program is designed to reduce stigma, build empathy, and empower students to support themselves and others.

Jim Tressel Fitness Challenge

South Range Middle School students will be bringing home their Jim Tressel Fitness Challenge workbooks this week! This program encourages students to develop healthy habits by incorporating physical activity, fitness, and wellness into their daily lives.

The challenge gives students an opportunity to work toward personal fitness goals, track their progress, and learn the importance of staying active outside of school. Families are encouraged to participate and support their students as they complete the activities at home.

Students should work through the activities outlined in their workbooks and record their progress as directed. The goal is to encourage students to make healthy choices, stay active, and recognize the importance of regular physical activity.

Completed workbooks are due Monday, November 30. Students should return their workbooks to Mr. Crish or Mrs. Liebig.

Thank you for supporting our students as they work to build healthy habits and make physical fitness a part of their everyday lives!

A Great Start to the Year: An Update from Mr. Szolek, SRHS Principal

What a great beginning to our 2026-2027 school year. Thank you to our families and community partners for your continued support of our students and programs! One focus this year, at the high school, is on raising the rigor in all classrooms through increasing the level of questioning and providing exposure to ACT-like assessment items.

Another area of emphasis is improving our rate of attendance. Each day, homerooms which have 100% attendance will be entered into a drawing which will take place at the end of the quarter. For the first quarter the theme is “Donut Miss a Day of School.” The two homerooms drawn will receive a donut party!

Finally, in prioritizing the safety of our students, we are collaborating with the ESC of Eastern Ohio and the Mahoning County Prosecutor’s Office to implement vaping prevention and alternative to suspension programs. More information regarding this initiative will follow!

Again, thank you for making South Range a truly great place to be! Go Raiders!

Bus Garage Earns Perfect Inspection Score

We are proud to announce that each and every SR bus passed their summer inspection! It is not an easy feat for districts to have perfect inspection scores, and this achievement is the result of our dedicated transportation staff. Drivers spend most of their summer ensuring our buses are the safest they can possibly be to transport our students. It is only because of the wonderful, skilled, and talented group of drivers that South Range has such a high functioning bus garage. Again, a huge "Thank You" to the great group of people who make up South Range Transportation!

Curriculum Update - Fall 2026

Targeted Interventions: Supporting Every Learner

South Range continues to provide targeted interventions to support students in developing essential literacy and mathematics skills. These interventions are designed to meet students where they are, address specific learning needs, and help build the foundation for continued academic growth.

  • UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute): Provides systematic, explicit phonics instruction to help students strengthen foundational reading skills, including decoding, spelling, and word recognition.

  • Really Great Reading: Supports the development of foundational literacy skills through structured, evidence-based instruction focused on phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, and fluency.

  • TransMath: Provides explicit, systematic mathematics instruction designed to help students develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and strengthen computation and problem-solving skills.

  • REWARDS: Offers structured reading intervention that helps students improve multisyllabic word reading, vocabulary, and reading fluency, supporting access to more complex text.

  • IXL - personalized learning plans based upon students currents needs in math and reading

  • Wonders - Small Group reading opportunities designed to support students through vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.

Through these targeted programs, teachers can provide focused instruction based on student needs, monitor progress, and adjust support as students develop new skills. Our goal is to help every student build confidence, strengthen foundational skills, and make meaningful academic progress.

Mathematics: Building Skills Across Grade Levels

South Range provides mathematics instruction through a combination of high-quality curricula designed to build conceptual understanding, problem-solving skills, and mathematical confidence at every grade level.
