Families,

The daffodils and crocuses are blooming! Despite a few particularly cold nights, it’s definitely feeling more and more like spring! I hope you are taking full advantage of the longer days and warmer temperatures. Tomorrow’s forecast is fantastic. Enjoy it! When we return on Monday, we’ll have two full weeks before a long awaited break from routines.

Happy April!

Grade 3 State Summative Assessments

Grade 3 Families,

As Spring and the end of the year approaches, we will reflect with our students on their growth both personally and academically. We have seen our students persist, persevere, and accomplish so much this year. In the coming months, we will also measure student performance formally through the Smarter Balanced Assessment in Mathematics and Literacy. This will be our grade 3 students’ first experience with the summative state assessments. However, students have had regular exposure throughout the school year to the content and skills specific to grade level standards measured by the assessments, the critical-thinking and problem-solving skills embedded in the assessments, and the technology and assessment platform on which they will be assessed. Assessment schedules are structured to limit the amount of time students are assessed on any given day. Students are given all of the time they need to complete the assessment to their satisfaction. As a result, testing schedules are flexible and responsive to student needs. Through our district assessments, we have been supporting students by cultivating a positive culture where students are encouraged to do their best and proudly show what they know. We will continue the same support as we prepare students for Smarter Balanced. The schedule for Smarter Balanced Assessments are as follows:

  • English Language Arts Computer Adaptive Test: April 29th - May 1st

  • Mathematics Computer Adaptive Test: May 6th - May 7th

  • Mathematics Performance Task: May 8th

We anticipate that both the preparation for the assessment and the assessment schedule will help students feel comfortable and allow them to perform at their best. We have strategically planned the preparation and assessments across multiple weeks to avoid assessment fatigue and to best support our learners. We encourage strong attendance during the testing days along with healthy habits, including appropriate rest and daily breakfast. Please note that the use of smart phones and smart watches will not be permitted during the testing window. We encourage students to leave them at home. If students bring them to school, they will be asked to put them away in their backpacks.

This assessment information is only one measure of our students and their impressive efforts this year. We consider multiple data points when considering student progress and planning for instruction. This is a critical tool for this ongoing work and we appreciate your partnership as we gather information about our students at the conclusion of such an incredible school year.

As always, please contact me if you have any questions regarding this process. We appreciate your continued support.

Best,

Joey

Eagle Scout Project

I’m excited to share that there are two beautiful new picnic tables in the courtyard for classrooms to use! These tables were built and donated by Zachary Selger, a former Memorial School student, who fundraised, assembled, and delivered these tables as an Eagle Scout project. Zach met with Mrs. Bauer and Mr. Fontanella, Facilities Director, last fall to discuss the project, get permission, review safe materials, and share his timeline. Last weekend, he brought the prepped materials to Memorial and assembled them in the courtyard. They are now ready for use! As the weather warms, the tables will be perfect for an outdoor lunch, assignment, or craft activity. Thank you, Zach, for this wonderful addition to our courtyard!

District Art Show

On Tuesday evening, the East Hampton Public Schools community was treated to an amazing art show in the front lobby of East Hampton High School. The masterpieces of talented artists from grades K-12 were on display for all to enjoy. Thank you to the art teachers in each of our schools who have nurtured a love and appreciation of the arts in all of our learners.

Red Carpet Readers

The Smart Start Class walked the red carpet with their third grade reading buddies. They shared their favorite books, read the books together, took fun photos, and made bookmarks. Everyone wore their fanciest clothes and had a fabulous time!

Library News

Hi Cheetah families!

March was a great month in the Memorial School Library!

Thank you so much for all of the support that the Spring Scholastic Book Fair received!

See below for grade level classroom expectations.

  • PreK students are enjoying a variety of read alouds and songs with the themes of spring and Saint Patrick’s Day.

Grades K-3 have spent several weeks reading through our 16 March Madness titles and voting on their favorites. We are very excited to find out Memorial School’s book of the year in the coming weeks!

In addition:

  • Kindergarten has worked on predicting and making inferences while reading The Donkey Egg by Janet Stevens. This book is so much fun and lead to some great discussions about the characteristics of mammals versus amphibians and birds.

  • First grade has finished up their coding unit. We are sad to say goodbye to code monkey until next year, but will be periodically using other tools to practice our computational skills. Most classes have also started the chapter book, Roscoe Riley: Never Glue Your Friends to Their Chairs by Katherine Applegate. This book is always a first grade favorite!

  • Second grade is reviewing library skills and using the library catalog to be independent library users. They will be reviewing skills using Kahoot and an engaging game called, Mrs. Lodge’s Shelve-It.

  • Third graders had a great time shopping at our second book fair, in addition, March Book Madness kept us all reading and thinking about books. We can’t wait to see which book emerges as Memorial’s favorite! As March winds down, kids are using the database PebbleGo to read about interesting and important women in celebration of Women’s History Month. Not only has this been a great way to celebrate the accomplishments of women throughout history, it’s also an important experience using this powerful research tool. Students will build on these skills as they become more and more independent as readers and thinkers. Keep on reading! –Ms. Sawyer

Safe Snack Guide

Please let us know if your child is diagnosed with any illness or injury (such as strep, flu, pink eye, fracture/broken bone, lice, pneumonia, covid, etc.) as the nurse office tracks illnesses and sends notification letters home if there are 2 or more cases in a specific classroom. Please be specific with any of the symptoms your child is experiencing.

Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:

  • Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough

  • Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)

  • Mild headache and/or stomachache

  • Fatigue

Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:

  • Fever (100.4 degrees or higher. May only return to school after 24 hours of no fever WITHOUT fever reducing medications)

  • Vomiting (Even once. Must wait 24 hours after last vomit episode to return to school)

  • Diarrhea (may return to school after 24 hours since last episode)

  • Chills

  • General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness, and/or muscle aches

  • Frequent congested, wet, or croupy cough

  • Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose

Please remind your child(ren) about good hygiene habits:

  • Wash hands frequently

  • Do not touch eyes, nose, or mouth

  • Cover mouth and nose when sneezing/coughing and then wash hands

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick

Often when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds and flu begin) it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether or not to bring them to school. Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities on returning to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom. Please send in a copy of the doctor’s clearance, as needed. Thank you in advance for helping to make this year at school as healthy as possible.

Medications

Every medication that is brought into school requires a “Medication Authorization” form to be signed by the student’s doctor and parent/guardian and the medication in original packaging with prescription label is to be brought in by a parent/guardian, not in the child’s backpack. No child may carry their own medications at the Elementary level. Please use a large ziplock bag for the medication plus the medication order, and label the bag with your child’s name before dropping off. Any controlled medications will need to be counted and signed off with the RN and parent so please allow for a few extra minutes at drop off.

Please note: COUGH DROPS count as medications and are not allowed in school. All over-the-counter medications also need a medication order from your provider.

Food

We have several students with severe food allergies, therefore we highly recommend non food items to share for birthday celebrations. We ask for at least 48 hours advance notice. A great resource for allergy free snacks is the Safe Snack guide at https://snacksafely.com/safe-snack-guide/

Health Concerns

If your child has a new health concern which you would like to speak to the nurse about e-mail kwilliams@easthamptonct.org and mlemire@easthamptonct.org at any time.

If you have any specific concerns that arise during the school year (such as stitches, concussions, broken bones/fractures, etc) it is best that you send in a doctor’s note with dates, guidelines and restrictions, so we can all be on the same page and keep your child safe.

Phone Numbers/Contact information

Please make sure to update cell phone numbers and make sure mailboxes are not full. We call home and use ParentSquare for notifying parents and it is essential that we are able to contact you in case your child is ill, hurt or needs to be picked up from school or in case of an emergency.

Respectfully,

Safe School Climate Safe School Climate

The East Hampton Board of Education and the school community as a whole promote a secure and productive school climate, conducive to teaching and learning that is free from threat, harassment, and any type of bullying behavior. Therefore it shall be the policy of the Board that bullying and/or teen dating violence committed against a student by another student is prohibited. The Board believes that a school environment in which students feel safe, supported, engaged and helpfully challenged is optimal for learning and healthy development. The Board seeks an environment in which students and adults feel socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically safe; an environment that is free of harassment, intimidation, teen dating violence and bullying. Our website provides links to various policies and reporting forms including our Safe School Climate Plan. Hard copies are also available in our main office. If at any point you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to building administration for further assistance.
