Principal's Message

Across the county, state, and nation a new trend is causing great concern among educators as there has been a substantial increase in the number of students who are missing school frequently.

The number of students chronically absent has nearly doubled since the pandemic. Prior to the 2019-2020 school year, 8 million students nationally were considered to be chronically absent. Since the pandemic, that number has doubled. By definition, a child is chronically absent if they miss 10% of the scheduled school days.

According to the Michigan Department of Education, over 38% of students were chronically absent in the State of Michigan in 2022. That same year in Riverview, 41% of our students were chronically absent (www.MiSchoolData.org). On our trimester schedule, this is the equivalent of 6 days missed.

Research shows that attendance is a key indicator for success at all school levels.

  • Children chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade are much less likely to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade.
  • By 6th grade, chronic absence is a proven early warning sign for students at risk for dropping out of school.
  • By 9th grade good attendance can predict graduation rates even better than 8th grade test scores.
  • During the 2022-23 school year, 60% of our students who failed a class in the 3rd trimester were chronically absent.

The Riverview Community School District is making attendance a top priority for the 2023-24 school years and we need your help. Please encourage your student to come to school, on time, and ready to learn every day.

Thank you, in advance, for partnering with us in your student's education.

Senior Sunrise

On September 20 at 7:00am, the Class of 2024 gathered for the 4th Annual Senior Sunrise. Seniors enjoyed donuts, while drinking lattes, coffee, and hot cocoa with their classmates - symbolically welcoming their senior year by welcoming the sunrise together on the football field.

Special thanks to a great group of parents who helped set up & clean up, and a big shout out to Elliott's Bakery in Trenton for giving us a great deal on the delicious donuts - be sure to see them for all your baked good needs! Thanks also goes to Jeff Edwards & our food service crew for helping out with the lattes, coffee, and hot cocoa, and to Joe Pace for getting the stadium open & ready for our Seniors. The class sincerely appreciates donations from the parents of 2024 to make this event possible. A great morning was had by all!
